Guys, vBulletin has released a new you beaut version, but have also changed their payment structure for the support. If we buy the new version before the end of this month, we save about 50%, but unfortunately the OZgolf account is a little short of the amount required.

If you enjoy using the forum without ads and responsibility to businesses, then please consider paying a few bucks to OZgolf via the paypal links.

If we can get the new version, expect it to be running on this site some time in December.

26th October 2009, 12:54 PM
Hey all! Thanks for helping out again. SMS, 5 bucks goes a long way. We just try and cover the costs of the software, domain name registration and site hosting. And everyone has helped well with that over the years. I don't know anything about this new version myself, but Andy and Clikchic think it's the ducks nuts. If we jump now we can get it cheaper which seems a smart idea to me.

As many of you know, Clikchic hasn't been well for a while now. She's switched down to part time work for the next month but is going to finish up at the end of November, and take some time at home to rest etc. So she's keen to revamp things here a bit. So we may be able to make some changes to the way things look and work, and maybe even take some suggestions to how to make things better! (and if it makes Andy's job easier all the better, he pretty much single handedly runs this place!!)

AndyP
26th October 2009, 01:48 PM
I've had a few PMs about the payments. As goughy said, 5 bucks is plenty if several members contribute. I'm not across the amount in the paypal account (and also have no idea what the deal with BPay would be), but I was told we were $50 short for the upgrade. Of course, raising over this won't hurt because, then it would cover future costs of the portal, server, domain, etc.

From the sounds of it, the $50 would be covered by now, so thanks guys. Anything extra helps for later on.

AndyP
26th October 2009, 03:18 PM

I have no idea what the differences are myself. But clikchic thought it looked pretty good. In some cases the differences may be behind the scenes; better spam protection etc etc. We'll find out soon enough.

And as Andy said, thanks to everyone it looks like we've just got the new version covered (thanks to them offering us a discount till the end of this month). The extra goes towards other site upkeep thingies (no new driver! You'll realise that at the champs ;) )

There are 5 layer golf balls now ?

I've only been in hospital a week - when did that happen....

Golf balls are ending up like razor blades ..

the first layer distracts the golfer
the second layer gently pulls on the players wallet.
the third layer consoles the golfer using "modern counseling techniques"
the fourth layer holds the fifth layer
and the fifth layer has the pixy dust.

Just an update on what's happening.

Clikchic has downloaded the new forum software, and is currently making a copy of our current forum, database etc etc. This is major upgrade so she is setting up a test site and will first install our current software to it and then do the upgrade to it to see what happens etc. AP has told her not to worry about any of the mods we have, which was concerning her. He'll take care of that once the upgrade is done.

So I'll keep this thread updated as things are happening. She's hoping to have the test site and forum up tonight and be doing the upgrade to it tonight as well.

J AP has told her not to worry about any of the mods we have, which was concerning her. He'll take care of that once the upgrade is done. This means some of the little extras that I have added will disappear, as well as the front page/portal as we know it. We'll start from scratch and I'll add what I can as the year progresses.

Here are some of the extras that I can think of:
Chat Links and features
Extra stats on the main forum page.
New posts link at the bottom of the page
Having the header posts across all pages in the relevant areas
Thread ignore
Posting by proxy (OZgolf Mod)
Separation of Stickies and Normal Posts

Sorry guys, I have been sick a lot so have had to put things on the back burner for a bit. The test site upgraded perfectly and seems to be working ok, so I hope to get the upgrades done over the next few days. Some of the plugins we use may not work with the new version of the software, and getting things neat and tidy may take a bit of time, but the forum once upgraded should be in working order.

So anyway, if you experience downtime, it is likely I am working on the site, will post a site announcement soon in regards to downtime etc.

Robyn ignore these impatient people.

Chops and I had a PM conversation last night and as a result I found a few different options.
Is Tapatalk the best option, since it requires a cost to the end user?

IMHO, $2.99 is VERY cheap for this sort of access. Having a "paid for" app may also mean better support/upgrades in the future. If it is as easy to get going as they say it is then it is surely worth a try.

I just upgraded from an iPhone to the Nexus One android so I'd be keen to see what it's like.

Thanks for installing it guys.

It works great. And for $2.99 you really can't complain!

The only thing I'd like to see them integrate is a 'go to last read post 'action. That's something I'll take up with Tapatalk.

We hadn't officially announced it as we still have a couple of people testing it, but all seems well so far. Thanks go to Robyn for acting on this quickly last night. So far, it seems unlikely that we will uninstall it.

If there is demand, we may look at a secondary option for mobile users, like a customised template or something.

How did you guys know that it was fully installed?

Yes it's looking good. Great work. Now I can keep up with all the intelligent conversation every where I go.

It has a popup that notifies users that this site now is iPhone native and sends you to the App store.

Well, it's not working properly on my phone.

Probably because it's too new. I've sent an email requesting support in the new version for you. :)

There is a setting somewhere such that when you reply to a post it uses the thread title (or title of the post you reply to). The main benefit of this is for viewing threads in threaded view, but since many other posts don't it, I believe it doesn't work very well.

A member let me know that the paypal donation buttons at the bottom of the screen had disappeared. It must have happened with the last version upgrade.

Instead of adding them in again, I have installed a modification that has added a "Donate" link to the menu bar. This will direct you to paypal. This isn't a bump for donations, but if there are any issues with it let me know.

So are any dorras needed for maintenance or dues for the site or server usage ?

AndyP

The Goughs would have to answer that. I'm not across the finances of the site, except that they owe me $43,659.32 for my time.

As self admitted goughy cant even moderate himself let alone the Forum and now you want to get money out of him ???????????????????

AndyP

It wasn't about the money for me before, so I let it slide. But now that I'm nearly unemployed, I have to look after number one.

Is your going rate just a little under $2 a post Andy?

AndyP
18th August 2010, 09:51 PM
When you put it that way, I'm selling my services too cheaply. I'm worth at least $2.13 per post.

Yeah well with Courty now promoted as a Mod, you have just reduced your kick backs by 33%!

You've got a few months income coming to tide you over till I need to kick in for for AP ;). If it comes to that I'm sure every member will be happy to donate $500 each towards you :)

Everythings going fine NK. We get scattered random ones that maintain the site. The only time we do a drive is when some sort of major upgrade is required, as we did when we upgraded the forum software. But I can't see something like that happening for a while now. Thanks for asking.

Excellent, on another matter of helping out, is Leah attending the Champs and if yes would she be happy to be assisted by the members with costs ?

I actually don't know this year. Rob's having brekkie with her tomorrow so I'll get her to ask. Not that she expects us to do that for her. It caught her a bit by surprise last year I think.
