Anyone know if there is any perceived benefit in these over the traditional stepped shaft in a putter ?

I think perceived would be the appropriate word.

I have bought one 3 but haven't put it in, then my old man nicked on me to use it. Have to get another one. Doubt it will fix my horrible putting stroke but I was keen on trying it to see what difference a putter shaft makes for my own knowledge.
So before every back yard clubmaker jumps in to tell me it makes no difference I don't care it's just a testing for my knowledge.

Surely people are getting desperate when they think a putter shaft will affect performance

With or without fluting?

It's mainly a feel based thing...
the stepped/stepless issue is more or less the transmission of vibration that is sensed by the hands. Each shaft does it differently. Think of driving a BMW 320i and then jumping into a Merc C200...very similar cars, same size engine, similar pricing etc but the driving quality and 'feel' is different.
It will NOT really affect performance in a technical way but will affect feel...and putting is all about feel. It's also a VERY cheap golfing experiment - especially considering you're on OzGolf !

When you say 320i, are you talking about E46 or E90?

Yeah we have them - they are about $70 though... I am considering one in my oddy as the shaft in it has been extended and rattles a bit.
I had one in an old scotty and it does produce a different sound when hit correctly. Quite a cool idea.
Personally I like a much softer putter shaft - A flex for example.

Are stepless shafts more likely to bend or break when you try to break them over your knee or bash them against something?
Could be a definite benefit if you could take out your frustrations with fewer worries.
