Guys

I am after a very close match to a 3 iron for distance. What is going to be closest, 20-21* or 22-24*

I hit my 16* cheats club that well I am thinking that my new set of irons which are 4-PW could be enhanced nicely with a 3 iron equivalent hybrid...heck I am almost thinking of dropping the 3 wood as the 16* is only 15-20m shorter off the tee but 100x more consistent off the deck. Hybrid 16,20,24??

20* & 21* is about 3-iron distance with my swing speed, Hux.:)

Well that solves that then 20-21 it is.

I noticed you have A Cobra Baffler pro is there much difference between that and and the DWS model?

Hybrid shafts are usually a touch longer than the equivalent lofted iron. 3 irons are typically 21-22deg, so I'd have thought you'd want at least a 22 deg as a replacement for a 3 iron.

Yep. I'd rather something in the 22-23 degree range, if it has a lighter, longer shaft.

Either that, or get a 21* head, and shaft it up with a steel 3-iron shaft to match your pro cbs.

Yeah, depends on shaft, if it's steel it'll be 21. If it's graphite I'd say 23.

Longer hosel, weight port for adjustment if necessary, better and far heavier weight shaft Speeder 85gm vs 65gm Aldila in the DWS. Not sure if the Pro is more open but it is definitely not a left tending club. My 16* is a rocket - extremely penetrating flight and very easy to hit.

Thanks Vegas and Henno and 3OD, sounds like I could go to the 23* then in graphite and get a soft landing 3 iron which is the aim of the exercise - essentially a 200-210m replacement that lands soft.

I can lend you my Sonartec 23* if you want something to try for a while.

fwiw, I plan to get a 21deg 909H with an iron shaft if/when I replace my 3 iron.

Thanks for the offer but my avatar might show my bias
Actually I just like to play and ho a bit so buying isn't that much of an issue.
I love the 16* Baffler Pro so am happy to stick with what works there. I am maybe on to some tour issue bafflers in 20 and 23* for reasonable $ so might invest in them depending on what version they are...I prefer the all black head.

I could be tempted on allegiance with the Adams PNT Idea Pro Gold which look remarkably like the 08 Baffler Pro but $$$$$$$

Hux Don,t know if this helps . I hit 4 iron 170m. I have a Bridgestone Hybrid 22deg. That goes 185 m pprox & the Cobra Baffler DWS. 20Deg that I consistantly hit 200m. Sounds to me like you need 22 or 23deg depending on the Hybrid you get.

Just came late to this party. I reckon the 21 degree is spot on in 3 iron distance.

Then why do you have both a 3-iron and a 21° in your bag (according to your sig)?

ahem, why do you have a 18 deg and a 19 deg hybrid ????

I'm going through some 'man-card' agony. I'm playing the 21 degree & loving it but if I remove the 3 iron, it might cause me to sing like a castrato.

But seriously, I'm planning that once the ball striking consistency gets better, I can use the 3 iron for the windy days & the 21 degree generally.

They're never in the bag at the same time. (And the 19 is looking decidedly shakey anyway due to the reg shaft. The baffler pro is a beauty!)

Weather up here is terrific. You guys seem to be getting an early taste of summer. I hear Rockhampton broke a few records today too. Could be a Looooong hot summer:lol:
Actually got the Baffler first & then started looking for another Hybrid as the gap between the DWS & the 4 iron was 30m. Tried the higher lofted DWSs & all I could do was Hook the ears off them . Finally found the Bridgestone was the only one I did not hook regularly.

I keep shaking my head - too good to ditch that one. I should probably have a 18*/23* setup but I haven't committed to learning the 3wd off the deck.

Cobra F speed 5 wood head with 4 wood shaft . then extended 25mm.
Magic club. As easy to hit as the DWS. Who needs a 3 wood:D:D:D

Yes but I am first in line on flea bay Henno...I have one in my sights on Fbay and another golfsite with a couple of tour issue Bafflers (unknown whether Pro). The 23* 4/R goes for good $$ as they are quite uncommon. The 20* is also hard to find but more common than the 23*.

So Pom you are basically talking about a 5 wood with a 3 wood shaft or close to it. Woud be a fairly high hitting club. Maybe a 43" shafted 16* hybrid would achieve the same thing???

pom

Could well be the case. Real easy to hit with a high draw. Pretty happy with my bag at he moment. Have got 14 clubs in it so I had better be. Now if I can only find someone to sell me a Quality golf game I would be happy as a pi...........:)

I have been hitting a Srixon AD hybrid at the range, its 24* and about spot on compared to my 3 iron distance

I got caught out a little bit when I bought a hybrid a month or 2 ago...found an Acer XP905 marked as a 3 hybrid at 19*. Great value for money (bought for $55 new with Aldila NV-105 stiff shaft), but found that in terms of distance it plays closer to a 2 iron than it did a 3. I ended up buying a Srixon i-701 3 iron instead of getting a 22 or 23* hybrid, but I'm hitting it well enough to be happy with that decision.
