Mine is at 46" thinking of going shorter and going back to regular shaft in driver as well.

I think companies have been sneaking up the standard driver length as all customers seem to care about is distance. I bought a new driver a couple of weeks ago that was 46" and the first thing I did when I got it home was take an inch off it.

Mine's 44.5" but it's a few years old now. The shortest retail lenght now is 45" from what I've seen.

A wise man once told me any amateur swinging more than 44.5 should have a good reason for doing so.

I have both drivers at 44" but I have added weight to get them to SW at D4. It has improved accuracy measurably and lost little in length, I would never own a driver longer than 44.5" again.

I think the other question to ask is why are the 3 & 5 woods becoming so long. I have seen some 3 woods at 44 inches long.

Hopefully they start to come out with advertising that quotes;
"Our driver isn't the longest but its the straightest"

I wonder who would buy a driver from the above statement?

My driver is 45" and I hit it pretty straight, but I am tempted to do what Moree suggested above.... play it at 44" and weight it up.

henno

play it at 44" and weight it up.

Wouldn't the shaft get really, really light? And then weighting the head would feel wonky? Would you need to backweight the shaft as well?

Don't know, I am not the club fitter. That's his problem.

simmsy
28th July 2009, 05:36 PM
Tourfit showed me one of his 687 drivers that he owns the other day, super heavy in the head something like D7-8 and the shaft felt like it was a toothpick.

He wouldn't have enough time in the day to write all the PM replies that would be required. 8 page PM replies to each inquiry takes time.

So it seems, that a driver length in between 44 and 45 inches would be optimal for even the tallest of players, i'm assuming JC is a tall MOFO and jarro has the footpath built very close to his arse :).

So my next question would be how long is everyones 3 wood, if you indeed have one in the bag?

adlo
29th July 2009, 12:46 PM
42" I think.

JC is 6'4" as am I, and Haysey and a few others. A lot of tour players are tall, however, it is very rare for a tour player to play a driver longer than 45" zig.

zigwah
29th July 2009, 12:54 PM
I'm not quite as tall as you guys only 6'3" , i will definatly be going to 45 or even 44.5 for driver. I didn't measure my 3 wood b4 i pulled the shaft so i have no idea how long it was.

If you cut off 1" from 45" and then adjust the swing weight back to D3-D4, is there a preferred way to add the weight as there are many ways to do it, resulting in different feel?

Just over 46" for me.

I too would like to know what are the ways of adding weight to a club abd what differences each has.

Anyone here knowledgeable is such things? :-"

Thinking of doing the same and play a Adams 9064ls at 44' with a Fubuki 70 A series x.

Couldn't resist bring Zig back to life.

My 2011 Cobra S3 driver is 45.5 inches but I'm 6 foot 2 so it doesn't feel too bad.

My Ping K15 3 wood is 43 inches and feels good too.

My Wilson Di9 4 iron (really a 3 iron, stupid jacked loft labels) is 39 inches

I hit my 3 wood 280 yards into the wind too

Driver - 44.625"
3 Wood - 42.125"
6 Iron - 37.875"

There is nothing that I hate more about modern golf clubs than the current trend of 46" drivers as standard. In all my club fitting, I would come accross maybe 1 in 10 people who can actually manage/use a 46"+ driver.

This thread brings back memories of our 18 holes with Zig at Shepparton. Can't remember him actually getting a drive airbourne. I wonder what happened to the lad. Oh, almost forgot 44.5 inch driver shaft in my bridgy.

I played with guy yesterday and he plays 5! and he scunged everything low with a small fade, no heaight whatsover. A lefty who just hit everything low and when I mean low it would go about 150 then roll out 30 meters or so. it was actually fun to watch, very god short game too.

he was hitting a 12 degree driver too. He just knuckled everything low.

Does a God short game involve lots of bump and running with a 1 iron?

I'm pretty sure it must involve a giant finger coming down from the sky (Monty Python style) and knocking it close to the hole every time.

My current driver is 46 inches according to the specs. And I'm only about five eleven so I have to swing it round my body Craig Parry style. Except I hit it longer than he does (due to my power draw) :D

Except for the dexterity, the fade, the handicap and the short game, it sounds familiar.

ps. 46" driver to get the ball above 10* launch, with a sub 85mph swingspeed.
