All and sundry,

Aside from myself required to build a net I'[m looking for the following "ideas":

1) type of net - fabric etc and where to buy it;
2) poles / supporting ties etc - what works, what could work, and what was a great idea but I must have on something (looking for lessons learnt here);
3) measurements of said net plus any thing related to this (eg - bit on the side to stop fly-bye shots etc);
4) rubber mat - where to buy, what "type" to buy, and nothing silly like $200;
5) artificial grass - again where to buy , where to look (as in are there some suggested places to buy from that may not be one's first guess), and GLUE to similar to hold / fasten to the rubber mat

Anything else Ive missed will be most appreciated. I have a carport that I can use as well as back yard. B/Yard would require fixing poles etc, whereas carport could tie net to existing support posts and beams.

I am sure someone out here has done exactly this so look fwd to hearing from you.

I looked into it. To be fairdinkum I wanted a proper net. The net alone was $300ish a couple of years ago, and that was before I framed it.

Pretty sure this was the mob http://www.netmaker.com.au/6.html

Get a big blanket, a few pegs and a clothes line.

That will do the job just fine.

Just get one of the nets from Golf World. They work well.

Use Birdie Balls. You dont have to worry so much about the quality of the net cos you cant kill anyone with one.

Virge, by "pergola" material can you enlighten me on what you mean - I'm a bit thick I think.

mTb - I have a Birdie ball just never even tried it.

PeteyD - unfortunately Golfworld is not in NSW (according to their website) however if you mean use one of the off the shelf nets that can be obtained from Drummond, etc or eBay then that is a "perhaps" - I was looking for something cheaper but maybe that is too ambitious or silly.

I think Virge means shadecloth.

In addition to your netting, get a canvas sheet as your hitting target. I think some of the bigger golf shops sell them (with a target printed on it) or you can buy a piece from a hardware store.

Alternatively, place an additional net at a 45 degree angle (towards you) that will deflect the balls downward. The benefit of this is it the ground takes most of the impact rather than the net. And lastly get the best quality netting you can. Don't go for the cheap stuff if it's going to take all the impact as it just won't last.

I got one of these from ebay, cheap as chip's $50 does the job but the black plastic sheet doesn't last long. I hung an old sheet up in its place, works a treat.
Got an old mat from the club, set it up in the garage, can hit balls anytime, especially sat arvo when its raining and i'm not playing, listening to the races!

As i'm now buying one of the True-strike mats, anyone want my old mat? :smt038

That's like mine, paid $50 delivered from the bay, the centre thing is crap, i just got an old sheet, folded it half and clipped it to the frame.
Can smash drivers into it all day, no problems.

A blanket for the middle sheet is goo as they plastic one is noisy. I have but it's just folded away as I'can't leave it overnight as it gets to windy here.

I use shade cloth over the kids swingset. Swings removed, of course. Be wary about hitting the metal bars with the ball though by accident or you migth be coping a golfball back at you. Cheap to make. Shadecloth is from Bunnings and cable ties to hold it all together. Couple of pieces over the mail hitting area. And is much quieter.
