I am currently playing a set of TM R7 irons which was an initial experimentation for the lighter shafts. The results have been good for me in terms of the 95 gm shafts but the stronger lofts are a problem as the distance gap from 5 iron to hybrid for me is 5 mtrs and the 45* pitching wedge forced me to try a 50 * gap wedge in the R7 :smt093.

This has not worked at all as it is so chunky it does not give me options for pitching and chipping that I would like. My first wedge preference has always been a 52* which I am now going back to.

I love the Nippon 1050 wedge shafts in my wedges and have recently been pondering some type of combo set where the pitching wedge was 47* and the lofts worked back from there. Forgiving irons in the 5 - 7 and scoring in the 8 - PW all with Nippon 950 or 1050 8)

Has anyone else gone down this track and what were the results.

Strangely enough, I'm toying with the idea of doing that with the AP2's when I get them**

gap - 8 iron in AP2 and 7 - 5 in AP1. No idea whether it'll work or not...

**Depending on whether I grab those MP52's of 3OD. If they ever arrive from there world tour:roll:

Dunno if that would work mate, as the lofts on the AP1's are stronger - http://www.titleist.com.au/golfclubs/irons/AP1.asp

I would love to try a set of combo irons, like Titty 735s, Maxfli A10s. might have to start searching ebay.

Have you done the exercise to see how many of these 4,5 and 6 irons you hit a round ?

I had a program once where you plugged in what sticks you used per round, it made for interesting reading. If you have a decent and reliable 4 and 5 iron hybrid maybe even the 6 iron is redundant ?

unless you've already done the stats it could be worth doing.

Good point from 3.

I am thinking of doing something similar though Ping Launcher with srixon 506's 6 or 7 iron to PW with srixon 701's 4,5 and maybe six.

I bet I get to the pro shop and all the 701 demos you want me to pick up are gooooone! I wonder how a 701/701 tour combo would go.

Most of the people I've talked to reckon the 506 shits all over the 701 tour.
I think a couple of guys on tour actually went back to the 506's.

My TP RAC Combo's were a sweet set. But IMO they only worked because both head types looked almost identical at address. I don't think I could deal with mixed sets if there was a noticeable difference at address.

Very true! I can't wait to test out my MP60/32 combo set soon

Don't play a 4 iron and on average my guesstimate for a normal round would be 6 iron (4) and 5 iron (1-2)

As the lofts are stronger I reckon a normal 5 iron loft would cover both of the above. A normal PW loft would then mean I could have a closer gap to my 52* instead of 7 degrees.

Would still love to be playing Nippons in my irons though

I have a set of gunmetal MacGregor things that I've never used, if a Brisbane local wants to test the water

How much do you want for them? Although aren't they stupid hard to hit?

I was tempted before I read some of the reviews saying that even the cavs in the long irons were about as forgiving as most blades.

P.S. Yummy irons though.

I picked up a 7 iron in a clearance bin a while back, its no different to most of the other smaller head forged irons I have hit

Really? Like J33 sorta feel?

Chris32

Never hit a J33, but comparisons I can draw are they are similar to Titleist 690cb's, a touch less forgiving than Titleist 755's, and very similar to titty 735CM's

they CB in this set are very small, and I'd guess they would play like a blade anyway.

They are noticeably smaller than my TM 300's, and the MB's get even scarier!

You are welcome to try them, they have X-100's in them and I haven't use them since getting them put in.

Too much shaft for this little black duck. And I don't want to annoy perci by getting him to remove shafts he just installed. :-D

I reckon one of the most underated combo sets is the Hogan FTX, they are a bargain now. They are a good combination of everything, I don't like the shafts much though
