View Full Version : Carrying 2 drivers

I've sacked my 3 wood, my hybrid goes just as good as it so it's gone.

Anyone see any value in carrying a 10.5 and a 7.5 driver ? Could be deemed as silly if I'm only hitting driver 13 times a round ?

Repliers over 3 lines in length will be placed on ignore ;)

Mickelson won a US Masters like this, about 5 years ago.
I did it early on with a Status 2-wood (laminate) and TommyArmour 845 BeCu.
The idea has merit, and a side-benefit of forcing a safe 2nd shot on par 5s.

What is the difference in performance between the two? ie. total distance, carry, flight??

Dumbest idea ever. How about 3 reasons.

i) A 3 wood is just a shortened driver
ii) You aren't good enough to hit a 7.5 degree driver. (10.5 and 13 would be better)
iii) Trust me - Been there and done that. Get a 3 or 4 wood. and then use a 10.5 or 13 degree driver. Then work out which one to brig into play.

Much easier.

Can you hit either off the deck? My opinion generally would be no it is not worth it. Throw in another wedge, you can never have too many.

ok... firstly, your answer was too long.

i) maybe
ii) maybe not, considering a G10 7.5 is probably 8.5 anyway, if not 9° ;)
iii) read first post

You just made my resolve stronger :)

The XLS can be, not sure I'd even try the G10 :)

I am sure it was about 2 years ago (at least after he signed with Callaway)and he didnt win.

on my home track i will carry two drivers now, half need a fade, the other half need a draw and i now have drivers to suit. There is no hole at my course where i will hit 170+ at a green so plenty of room in my bag for it. I have only been carrying 13 clubs now anyway.

13 times a round is a lot, you would use a fairway wood or lob wedge heaps less.

He carried two drivers when he lost to our Geoff in the US Open didn't he ???

Been hitting my Hibore XL off the deck recently on one par 5 at home track, but really 3oneday, get a 3 wood you can hit, I've still got the XLS 3 wood I bought from you and it's a gem with the right shaft and the easiest 3 wood to hit ever!

If the first couple of drives with the Cleve are crook the titty will come out.

Is it just me or does someone with a nun in their avatar saying something like this sound just plain wrong?

LoL

In my best Maxwell Smart voice ...

Would you believe? 3 years ago, two drivers to win Bell South and US Masters.
http://www.golf.com/golf/equipment/article/0,28136,1566889,00.html

2008 US Open, he attempted the first round with without a driver.
http://www.golf.com/golf/tours_news/article/0,28136,1814671,00.html
And that article also mentions that he didn't use a 3 wood, in the loss to Ogilvy in 2006.

Yeah do it, I carry a 330 launcher and a 410 os sport, better than carrying 400 wedges that pretty much do the same thing.

Yeah, but some girly 13 degree was mentioned I think.

Why not try it. Experimentation is thy spice of life. As a further resort you could try something like this at about 43.5.

IMHO, that is just a 3 wood (fairway) with a fancy name, and still not easy enough to hit off the tee for the average golfer

if someone really wanted a 13 degree club to use off the tee, then 350cc or more would be much better. The bigger head inspires much more confidence.

200cc puts it above the average 3 wood tho. I see where you're coming from but people find this baby very easy to hit. It would be a pretty poor golfer that sprayed this thing built at 43.5. They'd have no claim for having two drivers anyway as they would have no need of a lower lofted one at all. They'd never be able to hit it. 3's a bit above that i think.

Didn't do it this week, with all the rain about didn't see the point.
