Finally went to see the Doc about the strange pains I been getting in the groin. Had to go have an ultrasound and now know that I have 2 hernias. At least I know why I get the pain now.

Have to have an op to get em fixt up.

Anyone had experience with these little buggas?

Ned

Depends where and what caused em ?

My second favourite animal after the meerkat. Cute!

The ones in the groin. No idea what caused em.

hyenas are mean and nasty, see The Lion King. Meerkats however are extremely funny and love warthogs (see the lion king). Animal kingdom knowledge is so much better thanks to Disney.

My best mate has had hernia trouble, Petey. He's had an op and still has some trouble. Do I need to ask him some questions for you?

PeteyD
16th June 2009, 05:49 PM
Thanks Andy, but being married to a nurse means the questions get answered in graphic detail. Just wondering what experience people have had. with the things.

AndyP

I know that he generally turns down a game of golf, because of the possible pain after a few hours of walking and being on his feet.

Been there done that; don't forget to take pain relief medication before you leave the hospital and before the local wears off and keep taking it. Oh yes, opt for the normal repair, not the keyhole version (success rate not good).

Jono might be able to perform an op on you at the halfway house.

The toilet there is always squeeky clean

16th June 2009, 08:44 PM
Um the toilet doesn't bother me about that!

unfortunatley yes, had mesh put in a tear in one side and had both sides of the groins cleaned of excess scar tissue....:-s

my groins used to feel like they'd pop out of joint, excrutiating pain for a few minutes and then it would go away

PeteyD
16th June 2009, 09:02 PM
sounds ezachary like what I get. The mesh is going in both sides :(

How has it been since?

A client of mine had the mesh thing done. He was tender for a week or two, but has been good since. Back lifting weight, MMA fighting and playing squash.

Yeh, I had bilateral inguinal hernias fixed up 2 easters ago.
Got them done by one of the best key-hole surgeons at St Vincents where i work.
Takes quite sometime to get over the surgery, around 6 months of no golf!
Applied to my club for a handicap extension, they would not be in it!
Handicap went from 7 to 11 the next 6 months of playing, couldnt swing no-where as hard or make a full turn.

been very good, did take a while to play golf again as titleist mentioned....some of that though I think is a mental thing.

I had "sportsman's hernia's" both left and right sides through footy. I would play or train and the next day could hardly walk.... a handful of anti-inflammatories and i'd be ok again until the next time. This went on for around 2 years of tests etc until the third specialist found one via ultrasound. Was in for the operation the week later, although had one side done as at the time they didn't know about the other side... had that done about 6 months later.

The doc said for professional sports people would be an 8 week rehab before full training again, but still had limited range of movement even after 4 or 5 months. Running in straight lines was ok but couldn't change directions....

Took me pretty much 12 months to get back to normal in a sports sense. Still get quite a bit of tightness and soreness when i've been out kicking the footy (like today!!) but doesn't effect any other sports.

Ok fun fun time. 28th July I go in to the hospital. I also have a 3rd one near my belly button, so getting all 3 done at once. After consideration I am going to have it done via the open method as the results are apparently stronger.

I am not looking forward to no golf.

Hope it goes well. How much time do you have to spend away from golf?

PeteyD
15th July 2009, 09:19 AM
Depends on healing time. 4 weeks at least I think :( Should be able to practice putting sooner though.

Surgery is overrated, use gaffa tape. That way you can keep playing golf.

Captain Nemo
15th July 2009, 09:39 AM
Being in the medical industry, the open method will definitely take longer to heal, maybe a bit more painful as well.
Good luck!

PeteyD
15th July 2009, 10:03 AM
According to the doctor he has mixed reports on the two. For a single hernia he thinks open is good, 50/50 for the multiple route. He had a patient that has done both and found the lap method more painful. I am taking the jump that the mesh on the outside is apparently stronger and going from there. Good painkillers are your friend.

Absolutely, im not putting one way against the other.
Just take it slowly on your recovery, be patient with the golf side of things.
Hope you have a speedy recovery!

Well after all the excitement and getting ready to go in tomorrow, we find out today that the wife has pneumonia. So no operation now until we get back form Japan.

Pneumonia. What's the treatment for that? Is she in hospital?

PeteyD
29th July 2009, 04:22 PM
Nah she is bed ridden at home. On mega antibiotics and seeing the doc every second day. She has improved and is going back to the doc on Monday, so that is good. The lungs are still full of crap though. Fairly scary all things considered.

No good Petey. I had an inguinal hernia repaired last July with the open/mesh. Was semi major due to size, spent 2 nights in hospital (gotta love private hospital service tho! ;) ). Got a nice ~13cm cut down low from the op. I was useless for a week or so after and I took it very, very easy for a while. Was back to putting ~2.5 weeks later but could still not stand too long. Back to work after 4 weeks (work in IT) and the first few weeks were hard and I tired quickly. Played my first round of golf 7 weeks after my op and first comp 8 weeks after. The body was up and down on how it felt after the rounds. I put some weight back on post op and that made the area a little sore too, but ~7 weeks ago I finally went on some stuff to assist with that under instruction of my Dr that had been looking after me the whole time. Down 7kg and that area feels not too bad. :)

Any questions shoot, but like everything you can research it a heap and it is different for most people. Just take it very easy post op and don't puch yourself!

Good luck!

I had a belly button one done in 05. Also had the carrot sack removed (gall stones) so they did the keyhole and then found the hernia. Obviously I couldn't see it under with the porch out front.

Anyway I went back to work after 10 days and it was the silliest things I had ever done. One of my work mates commented about having spilt coffee on myself. Looked down and the lower part of the shirt was stained brown....yep having a slow leak probably cause of the @$#*$ gun belt and sitting in a car. Sooooo if you wear a gun belt at work and have to sit down in a car...I say leave it a lot longer than 10 days.

PeteyD
29th July 2009, 08:39 PM
Thankfully no gun belt, my days as a gunslinger are long gone. Or sitting i na car for that matter.

Apparently a lot stronger after the operation as long as I let it heal. So reoccurance chances should be minimal. Of course they can always occur somewhere else ...

Dressings came off today. All seems to be doing well. Lots of bruising and the one on the left side is painful. Have done a bit of chipping practice in the yard. Can't swing to a finish yet though. Walking is painful after a while and I can't stand up for too long yet.

Having had a couple, and some mates who have had ones fixed recently as well I would suggest that you sit out at least 6 weeks.

Chipping and putting after 4 or 5.

Otherwise its a minimum 10 week sit out for a repair of the repair job!!!!!!!!!

PeteyD

Ha, I must heal quickly. I basically have an all clear, but no Grunt style swinging. Heavy lifting is out until middle of the week, so I am back in comp golf on Wednesday. Went to the range and was a bit inconsistant given the time without a swing, but started to come good.

Hi Guys

Just thought I would bring it up here rather than ask the same thing in another thread. Anyone had their partners go through this?
Rachelle had Keyhole done last Friday and boy it has been tough this week. I am absolutely knackered. She is trying but it has knocked her about considerably, I think she over did it early on over the weekend and though off the pain killers is really struggling to do anything. Also coming off other matters is not helping.

I just realised it came out a little wrong. I meant back to a semi normal state and not carrying out normal duties as that may have come across as. She seems to be way worse than when she came home after a ceaserean when Tayla was born. I am struggling in how often I tell her off for trying to do things I feel are not appropriate for her condition.
