I need a new job. I am working with a bunch of idiots with the collective intelligence of a walnut. I need out, and a breath of fresh air.

I have a bachelor of journalism, experience in IT and web development and design, and currently working in a marketing and account management / client liason role.

Any leads out there for a narwhal-loving chopper?

(Yes, this is a serious post. No, I don't want to work for QANTAS. 8-) )

"Job" and "Byron Bay" are 2 things that aren't used too often. Take it!! It get's you south of the border and into a land where we have...... Daylight Savings!! It's also right next door to Ocean Shores!

henno
17th June 2009, 05:53 PM
what is your salary expectation Henno? all the other info is irrelevant!

More than $50k less than $100k :-)

And if the rest of the info is irrelevent, when you go searching through job ads do you search by salary first then try and find a position suitable to your experience? I would think most people go the other way: Find a list of jobs that suit your experience and then narrow it down by salary expectation.

who is your current employer?

Like I would put that on here.

Moe Norman
17th June 2009, 05:59 PM
its irrelevant for someone thinking of hiring you.

eg. I am about to have an opening on our online marketing staff, but it would be paying ~$65k inclusive of superor thereabouts, so if you are looking $80k + you are of no relevance to me!

henno
17th June 2009, 06:30 PM
Oh, of course it is relevant at that point.

And for the record, $65K inclusive of super is what, just under $60k exclusive. That would be just about the bottom of the affordability range for me. But I'd take it for the right job! :-) (I get paid more than that now, plus car, phone, expense allowance etc, but it's clearly not "the right job")

The average male wage is $60k in Australia now, Ozzy. (Well it was, pre-GFC.) So $65k super inclusive is not crazy money.

Base shifts for me is 137 days a year.

Throw in some OT's say another 15 - 20 days and I am above what Moe is offering.

No perks other then 2 squares a day when on shift, uniform and a good super contribution.

Don't need a mobile telephone or a car, get a half day off a week for training when shifts fall on training days.

I would argue that it doesn't. Just look at house prices alone. It is not uncommon for people to be repaying loans 6-8 times their gross annual income.

I pay a mortgage on my own, and let me tell you, $60k would just sorta maybe be enough to live on.

I handed in my resignation 2 weeks ago, after 8 years with one company. Stuck behind a desk all day every day when I wanted to be out & about selling and seeing my customer base. No room to do that with the current employer, so I had to look outside the square.
Start on 27th July as a Territory Sales Manager servicing a local area. So I'll be home every night, but still have a good sized customer base to work on.

Well, it turned out my salary expectations for this job were "at the upper end of their scale". That's fine. At least they had the courtesy of calling me to inform me that I was unsuccessful and why.

Anyway, it looks like I need to move with the quickness now. I approached the boss for a "what can this company offer me for the next 5-10 years" talk and it didn't go particularly well. Basically he doesn't earn enough, and his boss doesn't earn enough. Also, it turns out that my age is working against me. No matter how intelligent you are or how hard you work, you simply can't move up the ladder until you've "done your time" (read: you're an old bastard). So basically, it's not the smartest and brightest, but rather those that wait the longest. No thanks. No wonder they are breeding an aging workforce of unmotivated has-beens.

Anyway, it was suggested that I look elsewhere if I really want career progression and a challenging role (I'm bloody bored) into my 30's, and I agreed. So I'm a marked man now. They know my intentions and I know theirs. Seek.com.au here we come.

Not too bad actually. It's the time involved completing resumes for submission that's at a premium. There certainly seems to be a bit or work out there, I just don't want to leave one somewhat ordinary job for another. I'm going nowhere, but the pay's stable and the bills get paid. No use leaving for the same-old same-old.

3. Free slaps over the head
4. Free entry to all Board Meetings (By invitation though)

The reality is that the job market will slow at this time of the year. If you pick something up before xmas -> happy days. But more likely it's an opportunity to take it easy, think about future directions, play golf, etc - so you can be clear where you want to go in 2011.

If that doesn't work, there's always hookers & blow.

markTHEblake

by the way that was a serious question about the router... I lost patience trying to add more memory to my openwrt router with a usb flash drive.

I was chattin to one of the kids mates parents the other night, he is a firearms instructor at www.asset.edu.au and the whole security business is huge money, and casual workers are in huge demand. His company is setting up new offices all over the place. Casual security guards can make over $30 an hour wandering around a football stadium, shopping centres etc. You have all seen old women doing this - it cant be hard, and because of the Terrorism crap, they have security guards everywhere and its getting worse, which means lots more jobs, and beats pulling beers (though you woudl probably get laid more doing the beers like Sam). I cant remember the latest thing i heard, but they need security guards in one of the most ridiculous places now, at certain hours of the day.

I asked him how much someone could make, he says "over 200k if they are smart", he means if you get into training, management, or wait for it, 'risk management'. So i am like whats that?

Risk Management seems to be right up your alley Henno, hard to explain but its not being a sysadmin, or ITsecurity, but more like white collar forensic security whatever you might make of that. If i ever lose the job that I am in, i am signing up for this qualification right away, sounds like fun for the type of person that likes figurin' stuff out.

I'd suggest looking closely at getting basic security certified, this bloke says if you do it with them, he can have you patrolling the beat in 2 weeks. even if you only get 10 hours a week, its something extra you can do here and there whilst you work on something else.

Mate of mine did this when the wireless network company i was with went belly up. His first job was permanent nights watching security cameras. He said he just bought his laptop in and watched DVD's instead.

It's a Commission of Inquiry....70 years I'd guess. I have a copy of the report at work if you'd like to check your name.

I have forgotten my name at the time ;-)

I used to live rent free in a house that was used during the day as a "call centre" of a certain type that is by definition a criminal activity in Qld, and regular payments were made to the gendarme which Old mate called his Union membership, and with me living there it have him a sort of a cover.

But during that period I was only 20, and I was quite uncomfortable, as I knew its a jailable offence. Old mate told me if anything happened to say I did not know him and met him in a pub somewhere. Unfortunately I did work in the legit industry on saturdays and my dad had a prior in another state for the same thing, and the business 'operator' was a member of my golf club. I really had no defence to claim I did not know what might have been happening there and figured I could easily have been charged with being an associate

Probably not, but there was an incident one night, long story but it seemed like there was going to be a bust, I shat myself and bolted. DId not sleep too well after that.

A couple years later, old mate did front the Fitzgerald enquiry, not sure whether he made it to the grand stage or was only interview by investigators, only small fry so not significant I expect.

So not quite hanging out with the Conti family but I did visit one of their establishments once!

Dear Hiring Manager,

Thank you for your letter of May 1. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me a position in your department.

This year I have been particularly fortunate in receiving an unusually large number of rejection letters. With such a varied and promising field of candidates, it is impossible for me to accept all refusals.

Despite your company's outstanding qualifications and previous experience in rejecting applicants, I find that your rejection does not meet my needs at this time. Therefore, I will assume the position in your department this August.

Good luck, henno.

I'm going to move into 'any ole job will do' mode (within reason) instead of specifically looking for engineering type roles. I need to get back to work for my own sanity more than cashflow. A big gap on the resume probably looks bad already. Public service would be nice.

Bonus points if you can throw Narwhal or Zigwah into a response.

Good luck.

If I was already employed, I would take that on. If you say anything with enough conviction most people won't call you on it out of fear of looking like the dumb one that has no idea what you're talking about.

Although I still reckon that a narwhal reference could be easy. I'll see what the day brings.

Manhole covers are round, so that the cover cannot be accidentally knocked into the manhole, which would kill the water board employee working below.

Best wishes for tomorrow, Henno.

At my the interview for my last role I was dropped the "where do you see yourself in 5 years" line. My answer was "Sitting in your seat, doing your job" or something to that effect.

I got that question at my last job interview, in which the interviewer admitted it was probably a pointless question before he asked it. I answered that I was way to old to be career hopping, which I had already done several times, that I had kids in a school that we love for at least another 7 years and a wife that wont ever want to leave town anyway, that the company was so small that there is probably not a career path anyway, and that there is a fairly good chance I would be staying put wherever I am.

or something like that. Got the job.

Predictably but somewhat disappointinly, the HR girl posed this very question to me today. Straight from "HR For Dummies".

P.S. I totally nailed the interview of course. Save for some bullshit bureaucratic reason, the job is as good as mine... or I'm leaving for Byron to become an unemployed hippie stoner.

I'll get some feedback before the day is out.

henno
10th May 2011, 03:43 PM
Incorrect. I nailed the interview. My skills and experience were exceptional, in their words, and they have no doubt as to my ability to do the job standing on my head. The just think I'd be more suited to a far more senior position (which is true) and are worried about setting up a stable team as they've been burnt with people leaving recently. But in the mean time I have no income and I'm stuck in the "overqualified" bullshit merry-go-round.

Seriously pissed off.

PeteyD
10th May 2011, 03:52 PM
Hence you suck at interviewing as you do not present what is required.

And I know exactly where you are at as I have been there too.

Johnny Canuck
10th May 2011, 03:53 PM
You should have mentioned Zigwah. That would have brought you down a few levels in their eyes.

henno
10th May 2011, 04:01 PM
This is seriously bullshit. They actually said to me something along the lines of "you're too dynamic and too much of a go-getter" or some trash. I know where I ****ed up too: when they asked where I saw myself in five years I should have said, "Sitting right over there in the same crappy desk, doing the same shitty job, fat, lazy, married and bored."
