Friend of mine flew a couple of times over the last month. (Qantas but the airline is irrelevant)

He lightened the golf bag by putting golf balls in carry on luggage, which a lot of people do, but at the security check he was told he wasn't allowed to carry golf balls on the plane, because it was "sporting equipment"

No further explanation was given, and they wouldn't concede He had to go back and put his carry on luggage as cargo.

I assume playing cards and chess pieces aren't allowed either.

I would think a golf ball is potentially more dangerous than a chess piece.

They're both "sporting equipment" though, aren't they?

John had a box of balls taken off him when we came up to the champs last year. I wasn't happy - they were mine and he had pinched them.

So they're OK if stored in a bag and in pairs only?

Maybe somebody dreamed up a scenario where a ball might get thrown around the plane and injure somebody or break a window? Sounds strange?

Maybe they just have a side deal with the maintenance and baggage guys to keep them stocked up with new pills?

That's not as silly as it sounds

Not sure about playing cards though... Few years back a mate and I played heads up all the way home from Melb. And he had his full sets of chips in the big case!

Almost paid for my flight home ;)
