Thought it might be interesting to know what sort of cars we’ve got going around OZgolf (although I have been for rides in a few of them). I’m sure some of you are revheads (I am not), and would love the opportunity to talk about your current car, or a car you have owned.

I’m currently the proud owner of a Mazda6 wagon. Absolutely love this car, and think it looks fantastic, especially for a wagon. Another cool feature is the steptronic gears, so I don’t have to struggle with it being a gutless automatic, and can accelerate (or decelerate) and go through the gears like a manual.

http://img33.exs.cx/img33/5748/mazda65yi.jpg

Prior to this I owned a 1989 Nissan Skyline. I also loved this car, as it had a bit of power, but unfortunately it had to go before the baby arrived. The missus never really liked it either. :(

http://img132.exs.cx/img132/8913/skyline9lw.jpg

I’ve also got around in a 1985 Toyota Corolla. I still see this car around on the streets of the Sunshine Coast, and I know bugger all has gone wrong with it since I sold it. And it shouldn't, because it all went wrong when I had it. ](*,)

Prior to that I drove a 1976 (or maybe 1978) Holden Gemini. I killed it. Dad got it going again. Gave it to my brother. He killed it.

Yeah I think I am the only guy other than 1 other mate (he is a 1 marker ;)) that I've ever known who had a license yet never owned a car. Got really turned off cars during high school when all the 16/17 year old boys turned into bevans/bogans and ever since I said I would never own a car for the sake of owning a car, especially as a "status symbol" So far I have been true to my word. I have a Tickford 1999 Ford Fairmont Ghia Sedan..... with all luxury appointments....ie, leather seats, air bags, 13 speaker sound system (includes a 8" subwoofer), 6 stack CD player, wood grain dash auto everything. It has racing suspension, 17" alloys with 235/45 series tyres. and a Tickford worked straight 6. This was all stock and was bought from a guy named Brian FORD about 12mths ago. I love this car........ is it obvious.....

Previous car was a 1987 Ford ZL Fairlane, before that was a Ford 1974 6cyl. Cortina.... Can you tell I'm a FORD Girl ??

My hubby has a Mitsushitty 1993 Magna wagon... it's on it's 3rd engine... we blew up the first, blew up the 2nd and now on the 3rd.... faulty heater gauges.... like I said, Mitsushitty......

Wow, that's an ecclectic group of cars! I'd love to own a mint Datto 240Z now. I reckon they are a classic. 8)

I was driving down the Ipswich motorway the other day and passed this immaculate Ford Cortina Lotus twin cam. It had a For Sale sign in the window and I can't be sure but I thought the price was $1250 !!!! I just about had an accident trying to write down the phone number whilst driving. Didn't manage to get the number in the end. What a classic car! I always wanted a Lotus twin cam Escort, but the Cortina would be just as cool. Same motor I believe. They actually removed the pushrods from the little Kent 1600 motor and bolted the Lotus head on top of it, then rigged up a timing chain for the overhead cams. Awesome stuff! The same little 1600 in my Escort was a cracker. I bored it out and put a Weber carb, 1/4 race cam, 4-2-1 extractors and 2 inch exhaust system on it. I miss my days as a pizza delivery guy in Woomby....

I am the proud owner of a brand new Mazda 3! This car is a fantastic buy. Before buying I compared it to the Mitsubishi Lancer & Ford Focus. For the money (about $1500 dearer than the other 2) it kills them. It is twice the car that either of the other 2 are. What more can I say... I love it!

With good reason. Accord Euro is a quality car (not that your 6 is too shabby either). I'm flicking through the latest Wheels magazine where they did head-to-head comparisons of Japanese vs European cars.

VW Golf 2.0 FSI v Mazda 3 SP23
Audi A4 2.0 v Honda Accord Euro luxury
BMW 330i v Subaru Liberty 3.0R
Alfa GT v Nissan 350Z

The Accord flogged the Audi. They should have put the Accord up against a 325i BMW.

1990 Diahatshu Applause
1997 Hyundai Sonata
1999 Honda Civic

Pretty boring selection. I loved the my first car, the Diahatshu, but thats probably due to being my first car and all the extra "freedom" I found with it.

Sonata was ok for a while. Still don't know why the hell I bought that car.

The Civic is rather cooler and more fun to drive the the previous two. I'm hoping the famous Honda reliability will help me keep this car for a while yet.

The missus has a '94 model Corolla that we thrash to and from Casino this time every year, very reliable little beast - racked up 175k km's on it now!

Next car hopefully will be a 2-door Pajero, cruising around town and farm-bashing mobile, or a Subie Forrester which gives us a bit of clearance to cross paddocks.

need a very small mortgage. I looked into buying one but The Liberty as well as theother Suburu's are very expensive to maintain. Servicing and insurance costs are right at the top of the scale.

Service - $250 for a full service (includes all parts).

Insurance - this was the surprising part - insurance on the 92 Pulsar was around the $1500-$1800 mark. We paid $760 with AAMI & they gave us a 70% no claim bonus - even though we had an accident 4 years ago. Perhaps if you purchased the 3L or the turbo version insurance might be more. We live in a pretty rough part of Sydney too.

We used some equity in our home to purchase the car and pay $560 per month extra off the mortgage to cover it. We should have the thing paid off in 3.5 years.

Nope! We stopped insuring it in 2001 - it was previously required under our car loan - but after that was paid off, we stopped and just bought 3rd party property ($250) just in case we hit someone else.

I think we got $3000 trade in - I was amazed, we were offered $2000 everywhere else.

So what did he do about it - burn his bra?

Fact is in a large company, there are always disgruntled employees, and not all decisions are PC.

When was the last time you had a Nestle product, or filled the car with Shell petrolium? ;)

(Lucky?) I'm with AAMI, i think they are cheaper than most and i've found them relatively easy to deal with, unlike most other insurance companies.

Agree with Fishy on that one - they were the cheapest for living in a rough-ish part of Sydney - and the service has always been excellent.

We had car insurance through Budget Direct when we lived in Sydney in 2002/2003 (Marsfield - near Epping). They were the only ones to come in under $1000 p.a. for our 95 holden Nova. Who knows what they'd have been like if we needed to claim....

Once we moved back to Vegas, we found plenty of companies around the same price. Budget Direct's premium didn't change much.. :? Went with AAMI. $500 or so p.a.

In summary, she didn't like their "internal" policy of not paying claims.

I havent got an AAMI quote yet on cars, but they blew everyone away on my house insurance.

The one thing that annoyed me about Budget Direct is that i cancelled a $130pa policy 4 weeks before expiry. They charged me $30 to cancel, off set by about a $5 pro rata refund. I blew my stack at them, but gave me the T&C thing. My complaint however was directed at the operator not telling me this before he hit the cancel button, cos the obvious thing he should have said was to just let the policy lapse instead.

Looking forward to shopping around at renewal time this year, but i doubt they can be beaten on price.

Fishman Dan

Blakey - i guess at their prices you don't get Customer Service ;)

AP - If all insurance companies did was pay claims, their share price would drop, investors would depart, and they would fold :? But i understand where that sentiment comes from, these days when you make a claim you really have to convince your insurer that it's not some sort of rort.

Good car, but they seem to do far too much soil-testing with their sump guards.
The front end seems to spend a lot of time on the bump-stops.
And as they're a fleet vehicle, they'd rather replace a sump or gearbox than fit some decent shockies/springs.

I felt the front of the ute lift, and it started to push me towards the median strip in the middle of the road. So I slotted it into 1st and held it on the limiter.

Being a 2.0L turbo diesel, no doubt the 8 speed will allow more scope for keeping the small sized engine in the right area for good torque/power. No doubt it'll be the same 8sp CVT box that Audi use in their new road cars...

2.0d 120kW seems underpowered for a car that is large and weighs a lot...so I guess the turbo and the box is there to augment it.

I know a guy who's got one. He's a mobile mechanic and just LOVES it. Reckons it goes great on road and off, plenty of oomph when you need it, awesome fuel economy and pretty quiet for a dual cab ute. He does a LOT of fishing up around Jurien/Cervantes/Leeman and it competes very well on the beach and in the dunes with his mates' much bigger 4WD's.

Still...$60k+ is a lot of coin for a what is still a dual cab ute.

Toidy. Should be a very very nice way to get around! Welcome to the vee dub club.

I've got a MY08 Passat wagon which is also a 2L turbo diesel and it goes almost as well as my old V8 wagon even though it's giving away about 100kw - it's a beautifully smooth engine and well geared to match it. I'm sure that the Amarok will get along okay :)

It's surprisingly un-rattly too. I mean you can tell it's a diesel from the outside, but it's nowhere near as noisy as the diesels of old, and it's pretty quiet inside. It also gets around 6.7L/100 kms to boot :) I've only had it six months or so but getting out of the petrol price cycle is the best decision i ever made, so far.

I'm expecting absolutely no envy over this list. When a Nissan Tiida gets the guernsey as the best car you've ever owned the message is loud and clear that I treat cars as a method to carry the clubs to the golf course, and nothing more. The best thing I ever did was change from buying crappy used cars to buying crappy new ones from the first Daewoo onwards.

My first exposure to a TR8 was back in about '83 at the Dunlop 2GO Rally. Driven at the time by Malcolm Wilson of all people. Some other notables running at that event were Ross Dunkerton, Colin Bond, Greg Carr, David Officer, Geoff Portman and even Dick Johnson. Those were the good old days!

Anyway, back on topic....

Nice one. My FIL has the same model in the same colour. We've been borrowing it while our car was repaired. Bit different to drive than my diesel Pajero! So glad to give it back to him this weekend, unscratched. I'm not a Commodore fan at all, but the Monaro is a very stylish look, particularly in basic CV8 form without the extra nostrils and plastic spoilers etc.

I would recommend a Jazz. My mum has one and I've driven it a fair bit. It has tonnes of space and a nice car to drive. We got the Swift Sports, very good handling car but if need to have more than 2ppl in the car it's quite a tight fit in the back and there is not much room to carry stuff. You will also struggle to fit golf clubs in the back.

Yep, and ipso facto their resale value is absolutely horrible. On the upside fuel costs aren't the largest cost factor with cars. Depreciation and keeping it on the road (rego, insurance and mainterance) are the biggest wacks by long way. Unfortunately the Jeep comes at the top of the class for most of those, add fuel addiction and they are horrible to own. I have a few friends who have Jeeps for life, too costly to replace, sunk cost etc.

BroKar

2003 Astra hatchback, averages about 7.3L/100km in city driving and mid-high 6s on the highway, and my PB is 24 archive boxes fully loaded :D

Family car is an 03 Magna wagon on dual fuel, definitely nowhere near as spacious inside as a Commode or Falcon but our kids are only 2 and 4 so it's good for a few years yet. Spare tyre eats into boot space but the boot is so big anyway it's not a real issue. I love wagons and hatchbacks as I'm always carrying stuff around for kids or my hobbies, I can't see myself ever buying a sedan.

Crappy old VE series 2 sportswagon, just love these cars. i flog them to death for 2 years and move them on and have never had one break.
I mean i flog them, tow 1.6 t boat at 120km/hr on freeway, lives on dirt roads, 80k km's a year plus, great car.
After 2 years trade them for same, i wash them 3 times, 1st time about 2 weeks old, about 1 year later and when i trade them, my theory is the dirt protects the paint, must work as the dealers always comment how good the paint is :-)

ps. don't ever buy one of my traded cars hehe

took the new toyota/Subaru joint project car for a test drive other day (Toyota 86, not sure what Subaru are calling it)

If ur looking for a quick, fun car to drive ona budget - get this. It is awesome fun to drive on tight roads (took it for a drive through east perth, and burswood), tight gearbox and goes like a rocket.

The opposite end of a practical, and i imagine it would go through fuel like a fat kid on a cupcake, but fun nontheless.

On the practical side - looking at getting the FJ Cruiser or Prado. Not sure yet which one. I like the look of the FJ and it just 'feels' better than the Prado, but i've always been a fan of the Diesels.
Thoughts?
