View Full Version : Subsidised ho-ing?

Thought some of the established rampant ho types around here could help me out. I'm toying with the idea of buying my BIL some absurdly cheap clubs from rock bottom to replace his current clubs that he bought at a second hand shop that used to belong to a grandmother.

Obviously, this is a bit of a big gift, so I was wondering if other folks tend to buy a few extra things along with their purchases with the intention of flogging them off on eBay to recoup the costs?

Is this worth doing?

If so, what gives you the best bang for buck? As a non-ho, I'm really not up with how much stuff is worth. Any recommendations?

You would easily exceed the $1000 duties limit before any decent recouping of costs were to be made. I have done the figures before. It's just not worth it.

I always add a few accessories in, not to hock but just for myself.
Gloves, Tee's, Spikes. Anything you may need to replace within the next 6-12 months.
Just be careful when purchasing balls from Rockbottom Golf. I bought some used recycled (Not Refinished) HX Tour's last year. More than a 1/3 were refinished!!!

When mates buy, I always chime in and add a few "light" items that don't add to the shipping.

When I wanted some Ping irons two years ago, I got a second set, plus a few hybrids and fairway woods to sell off to cover my cost. I sold all the gear on the forum at breakeven prices expecting them to have to go to ebay, but then make some profit. Everything got snapped up here.

I ended up putting a fair bit of time into it though, working out which clubs sold well on Aus ebay, and determining the most I would pay for them from the US.

You sound like Kramer and Newman in the great bottle refund scheme.

The sad thing is, that's exactly what I was thinking as I read it back.

I'd actually thought that my biggest risk was doing what Andy did and then spending so much time on research that I could have made more money begging instead.

C'mon 3, help me out. You can even refer to me as 'Grasshopper' in your next post if that helps. :)

Would you believe I had to google that?

I've got to get out more.

Having to google it, by definition, means that you are getting out more. Far more than the average Star Wars geek.

Are you a member of ebay ? Have a look at where you are buying from, then check the completed listings on ebay to see where there is money to be made.

One hint, per what AP said, don't try and make a profit from your friends ;)

So hoing to Sco at a seriously jacked up price is fine ;)

I don't buy overpriced TOUR rubbish, so that would never happen.
Only thing I ever made a loss of more than $10 on was the R7TPs I bought retail for $1100 and sold 12 months later for $575. Lesson learnt!

Don't think I'd be game to put anything in the pro shop after starting this thread. :)

I'm more interested in doing something nice for my BIL than starting up a business though. I'm just trying to think of a creative way of getting my BIL a set of sticks without either of our wives kicking up a fuss.

Why not just snap something up here, Larry?

My BIL is a lefty, and I'm too tight to buy him anything decent. :)

That makes the options far fewer. Bloody lefties. Have you tried to change his mind?

RBG has #3DX DC 5-PW for $100US. Does he need a 4i?

Bingo. :)

I figure if we're both toting the same sticks he can't whinge about me having an advantage. :)

Classic. Have looked at your avatar that many times and completely forgot

Well, you should be able to grab a lefty set even cheaper, but shipping stuff with irons opens the risk of breakage of shafts, or damage, if you are buying drivers etc to sell !
