03/01/05, Karana Downs GC, Social Game

Nothing special to report from the round. Putting was really tough work on this course, lots of slopes on the greens to contend with. Have definitely had better days.

Wouldn't mind going back to the course another time, now that I know what's around some of those corners.

5/11 effective T-shots.
8/18 effective regulation approaches.
37 putts.
---
9 pars.
2 bogeys.
6 double bogeys.
1 other.
Score 38-45-83 nett 69 (par 32-34-66 ).

37 putts Andy???

Thats a shocker by your standards! I was only saying today to eag's that if I could put like you (not actually physically like you  ) I'd be shooting par all the time. What happened to Doctor Bob?

FWIW I played Nudgee today and hit it pretty good again. Had 78 for 36 points.
7 fairways
11 greens
33 putts (missed two from inside 2 feet... how embarrassing! )

Nearly had the "back-9-holes-of-my-life" today

35 points. Turned with 14 and started to leak some oil after a steady start. Figuring that 4 par's is beyond me and i've blown *another* round, from the 10th i went Par - Par - Par - Par - Par, from 4-down to 1-up and hitting the ball sweetly. Poor drive left me in the right-rough on 15, 4-iron through the trees, ended up left of the green, duffed a chip and made 6. We're square again.

Then fate caught up with me. 16th at Casino is a good scoring hole, skied the drive into the trees. Without much backswing, i smashed a 3-wood over the trees, the playing partners saw it land, but we never found the ball. It's somewhere in play, about 40 metres from the 16th green at Casino, or it was abducted for performance enhancing tests. Whatever... wiped the hole.

Par'd 17, bogey'd 18 and finished with 35 points.

Spppppeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiinnnnnnnnn'

Putting was really tough at Karana Downs. Always putting on a slope of some sort on really fast greens. Plenty of downhill putts that required a bit of touch and hope that you picked the right line. Or a putt that you had to try and dribble in the side.

I'm not too worried though, it was more the fact that I wasn't reading them right. The putts were going where I wanted them too. ;)
Keep in mind that I count putts from a "puttable" area. (Although I didn't count the two putts I had in the bunker on the 10th  )

Vegas, we'll go play there in a Open Sat comp sometime. It was only just over 20 mins from my place via Ipswich Motorway, so even less from yours.

]FWIW I played Nudgee today and hit it pretty good again. Had 78 for 36 points.
Careful mate, if you keep playing the way you have in the last couple of days, that handicap might go down. 8-[

nice run of form you've got going trung....

trick is to play as often as you can to get the feeling "ingrained" into your system....coz surely, it'll go away...
but the more you play when your game/swings hot, it makes it easier in the future...(if that makes any sense whatsoever)...

played 9 this arvo...but only recorded scores for 8 holes....lost my ball on the 4th, and didn't bother...
2 bogeys, 6 pars...not too bad considering...

course was in great shape vegas, except for the majority of the greens. They look like they had a light scarify not long ago, and were a bit "lumpy" in places.

The greenkeeper was following us around mowing the greens we'd already played too

City vs Country has been played and won - by the Country team, something like 13.5 to 7.5 at Ocean Shores. My day was pretty ordinary.... Note - we 'invent' our handicaps for non-regular golfers. I played off my AGU of 18.

Matches 1 (S'ford match), 2 (ambrose) and 3 (american 4somes) were all losses. Terrible match-ups, my nemesis being a 60-year old classic "northern rivers" golfer - shots never went higher than 10' off the ground, but ran forever on the rock-hard fairways.

Fourth 9: Individual Match vs Old Mate 24-capper. He had shots on holes 4, 6 and 7. Won the first hole, squared 2 and 3, and match squared on 4 after numerous brain-farts. Playing the long par 5 14th (6th) i hit one OOB, but squared the whole with a clutch 8' putt. I should have capitalised on the par 3 15th, but choked horribly and went 1 down. Index 1 16th hole we squared after leaving a 20' putt on the left edge.

17th hole - par 3. Tee shot into the bunker, and bunker shot into another bunker behind the green. His 2nd shot came to about 6', which he 2-putted. My 2nd bunker shot hit the pin and ended up 4' away, and i made the putt to take it to 18 - the long uphill par 5. I was greenside in 3, he went for a swim, and the match was halved.

I don't play much match play, but this was awesome. After 3 losses, i refused to end the day with the big goose-egg, and had to pull something out at the end. It was the only match of the day that was 1/2'd.

Royal Karana Downs, wednesday 5th

Gross 78, nett 63

i can't recall what made me play midmorning in that heat out there yesterday, i think i got slowly steamed on the front nine...had to take a 20 minute break and watch the cricket on the big screen in the bar after drinking 2 litres+ of water on course.

got a bit cooler for the back nine thank god.

9/11 fairways
10/18 gir
37 putts...sheesh....

was fiddling with my iron grip, 50% of the time nice straighter even draw shots longer than normal. other 50% some sweet shanks....i mean plenty so it was all good i guess.

When I played there on Monday, the front nine was definitely cooler, because a few of the holes were down by the river.

BTW, I don't think 37 putts is that bad on that course, especially with the number of GIR you had.

Well I managed to play golf most of the days I was off work. Also had a couple of lessons and a few practise sessions. And guess what - I am no playing like crap!!!!!!!!!!!! I have lost the plot. One day I can drive but can't putt and then the next it's the other way around. I think I'm in what is called a slump and I'm not happy. I know that it'll turn around soon and I'm being patient but It is very frustating. I seem to be playing about 8- 10 above my handicap every time.
Last night we played 9 holes and I had 24 putts!!!!!!!!!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR
By the way - well played Trung and all you other buggers who are playing well at the moment. Some of your talent my way - please!!!!!!!!

Hi All

Played New Brighton this morning, what a day with the whole range of ups and downs that golf brings.

Birdie start, then wipe. One of my best shots ever on the 15th from 150m onto the green a few skips and into the hole for a eagle 3 which to my partners disbelief was 6 stableford points. Next hole wipe!

Just about sums it up really 31 points with 6 wipes.

normally the front is cooler but it was full sun and got overcast with the incoming change on the back 9...thank god.

those greens are tres fun to putt on, deceptive buggers, fast too whilst receptive.

is there anything more fun than driving that 17th. nice slow drive, can't normally hit a massive fairway but can thread it onto that green or carry each time...3 times so far...sheesh....

im beginning to think a 3 wood and running it on would be better though....

i still have discount vouchers if you're up for a social $8 bash.

wednesday comps are $5.50  $7.50 on satdays....huzzah!

Had a high scoring game, 51 for nine at the local however this is a result of experimenting with my swing, very happy as I didnt hit a single slice all day.

Problem seemed to be overhitting the ball now, looks like the change of swing has given me more distance to need to adjust for that now.

On wednesday shot 88 - that was 8 solid pars on the front 9, and 50 strokes on the back - awesome stuff, and i didnt stop trying. Lucky i holed my 3rd chip on the 17th, and putted quite well, otherwise it could have been worse.

hit the ball just as bad today but for some unexplained reason avoided the water all but twice. Then combined with 11 putts on the 1st 9, 3 up and downs from the sand in a row, a couple of 2's and five 6's on the card i managed a 75, which means I have played to my handicap for only the 2nd time in 6 months. Hooray, now if only i could putt like this when i am hitting the ball well.

An Eagles nest is usually a basket suspended high on the wall in the clubhouse somewhere.

A golf ball or two is thrown in after every comp round. If any golfer has an eagle, they get all the balls and they usually have to get them out himself - naturally with the aid of a ladder.

You dont see many Eagles nests like this anymore, eagles are dime a dozen these days with so many low markers and longer hitters around.

back to reality today with a thump. After a couple of 78's lately, I shot a crappy 31 points (18 + 13) around Gailes today. Hit the ball pretty good for the first 11 holes, then just lost the plot and started slapping it all over the shop. I figured out how to improve my putting stats.... hit only 4 greens. Putted really well and chipped pretty nicely too.

7 fairways
4 GIR
28 putts.

Company was good at least! Choppa, Brooky17 and rok were a pleasure to play with. Brooky17 had half a dozen shanks, but so long as you didn't stand off to the right of him you were fine! Choppa struck the ball really well, but struggled with the slow greens.

A very poor 82 for 76 nett in the monthly medal on Saturday. 6 one putt greens and 5 three putt greens. Battled a huge "straight over the top" pull-hook with long and mid irons, culminating with missing the 18th green by 40 yards with a six iron.

Perhaps the only good thing about such horrible ball striking is that it motivated me to one of my twice-yearly visits to the practice fairway today. I think I've fixed it (how many times do we say that to ourselves after some time on the range :!: )

18 yesterday - front nine 1 over my handicap - back nine pretty average - but I must admit I was so tired. We teed off at 4 pm and finished 8.30 ( slowish round - but we weren't in a hurry). Not used to playing so late so fatigue really set in on the 16th.

09/01/05, Gailes GC, Stableford

Started off great with 7 pts in the first two holes, but this was just the start of an inconsistent day. The drives were also pretty inconsistent, with a hook being the most common.
Taking a two shot penalty for hitting a wrong ball is always a joy too. :(

The positive is that I have regained confidence in my iron play. :)

after starting with 4 GIR Pars....I was really feelin it....

esp after bombing a drive down the 13th, and stuck a 9 iron in from 160yards out (wind assisted to a red pin), I was all geared up for a great score...

but...it quickly became a horror...putting was terrible...iron play was poor...
think I need to get back to the range to work on my takeaway and follow thru...seem to be pulling a couple of iron shots...

finished 80, and off my social group hcp, won 2nd place (and a dozen noodles) with a three over score...
