I'm glad I don't work in an office either.

Do it, wear a mask.

Serious question..and probably a tad woosey.
If you were going thru an airport in the next few days would you don a face mask ?...and no its not for ugliness.

Apparently their effectiveness is uncertain (http://www.theage.com.au/national/face-masks-do-they-work-20090430-aojq.html?page=-1).

There was a nurses station setup at arrivals in Aukland. Anyone feeling unwell was asked to stop in get some assessment. Looked totally half arsed with a security guard, a nurse and mobile screen.

Almost nothing at LAX. Saw a couple of asian arrivals with facemasks wandering around the terminal but that was it.

I flew out from Cairns to Darwin on Friday and no sign of anything out of the ordinary, was an international flight too. One lady from Japan had a mask on, but I think that was because she contracted the flu here & didn't want it to spread.
Mind you, Jetstar couldn't even tell us that our flight was delayed by 1hr 15! I've got no issue with being delayed, but at least let everyone know.
We were waiting at the gate at about 10.30 am and all of a sudden the plane was being towed away! First I knew anything had happened was the news report I saw on the TV in the terminal newsagent.
http://news.brisbanetimes.com.au/breaking-news-national/jetstar-jet-returns-to-cairns-after-leak-20090501-api6.html

Came back in yesterday, was greeted by 4 people in overalls gumboots & masks. Also an announcement made over the P.A system on the plane to report to flight crew should you show any symptoms.
Even got put through the thermal scanner. Tried to save a fart up for it, but the line was too long & I didn't make it in time.

Scottt
5th May 2009, 10:05 PM
The masks are only useful if changed every 5-10 minutes. Loving the hysteria, though.#

10 people have died, yeah? 36,000 died from flu in the US last year...

razaar
5th May 2009, 10:10 PM
Scottt, what is the swine death count?

henno
5th May 2009, 10:15 PM
I think it is now 22 confirmed cases - all in Mexico.

And how come no-one cares that almost 1000 people have dengue fever in Queensland alone?

Scottt
5th May 2009, 10:28 PM

You answered your own question. Because it is Queensland.

henno
5th May 2009, 10:40 PM
That may be so, but as soon as a single person in QLD is diagnosed with swine flu I bet there is mass hysteria. Probably a media deal with ACA/Today Tonight in it for them as well.

Scottt

I'm the opposite, Henno. 10 years working in the media and I read as few papers, watch as little news and listen to as little new radio as possible.

henno
5th May 2009, 10:55 PM
Scottt, you have to remember that I have been out of the game for a while, and wasn't really "in" the news game to begin with. (More feature story stuff than anything else.)

Regardless, I am an information whore first and foremost, and a constant stream of current events and commentary streamed directly into my brain is a daily necessity.

What are you going to be like when you are old? They are huge media addicts.

My missus already calls me an old man, due to my unnatural addiction to the ABC in its many forms. Old man radio, old man TV, and old man internet. There's no hope for me.

However, those early morning posts you make in the NEWS...... thread will be viewed differently from now on..... old man.

Henno I will give you one thing, you seem to know where all information on the internet originated from.

Next year will be my 15th year on the internet. Not the longest by any stretch (Hat-tip: Tim Berners-Lee), but I have certainly had a (un)healthy relationship with the WWW that borders on an obsession.

Jono i think it's about time GPs wore some protection - hazmat suit, something like that. just tell the clients it's for their own protection, so you don't pass on what the previous patient had.
