Lee out of Australian squad for third Test (http://aus.cricinfo.com/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/2004/DEC/143667_AUSPAK2004-05_30DEC2004.html)
December 30, 2004

Brett Lee has been left out of the Australian squad for the third Test to enable him to play for New South Wales against Western Australia in an ING Cup match on January 2. Stuart MacGill, the legspinner, and Shane Watson, the allrounder, have been added to the eleven that won the second Test against Pakistan in Melbourne.

Trevor Hohns, the chairman of the national selection panel, said the decision to release Lee was taken after discussions with the player. "Following discussions with Brett, we have agreed to give him the chance to get some more game time under his belt by being available to play for New South Wales," said Hohns. "We felt it was unlikely Brett would be selected to play in Sydney, as the three fast-bowlers currently in the XI are doing a very good job. So in Brett's best interests, we feel it is important for him to get some solid match practice , not just for New South Wales, but also for Australia A over the next couple of weeks."

Hohns added that the selection panel was sensitive to Lee's position. "We acknowledge that the last few months have been frustrating for him, but his attitude and work ethic have been first-class."

Watson came in for special praise with Hohns describing him as an "an exciting young talent." Hohns added, "Shane gives us the option of going into the match with a combination of two fast-bowlers, two spinners and a seamer. His inclusion in the squad certainly gives us some variety if needed. Although he has yet to play a Test, Shane has plenty of experience as part of this squad, most recently in India, so if selected, we feel that he should be able to settle in and do a job for us."

Hohns also gave MacGill the thumbs-up. "Stuart gives us the ability to play two spinners if needed. He has taken a lot of wickets for New South Wales and has plenty of experience at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He is a proven performer for us, whenever opportunities have been presented to him."

The third Test against Pakistan begins on Sunday, December 2, at Sydney.

Australia squad 1 Justin Langer, 2 Matthew Hayden, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Damien Martyn, 5 Darren Lehmann, 6 Michael Clarke, 7 Adam Gilchrist (wk), 8 Shane Warne, 9 Jason Gillespie, 10 Michael Kasprowicz, 11 Glenn McGrath, 12 Shane Watson, 13 Stuart MacGill.

----------

So what do we reckon? Unchanged team.

Although I would love to see Watson play for Australia, I can't see the selectors putting him in the side to replace Lehmann, before Katich.
And I would like to think that MacGill won't get a game [-o< . It's a big enough worry that he is in the squad in the first place.

BTW I'm calling this one a draw early.

I'm glad they are giving lee a chance to play some cricket. Not particularily because I'm a big fan of his. I just think this 12th man position is a wasted position. I think it did much harm to bichel's career (it's not a qld thing onewood). I just can't see how sitting around, playing in the nets can prepare someone for match cricket.

At least if he gets some games under his belt they may actually be able to tell if he is in form or not.

Aussies to win in 2 days. I luv watching them kick butt.

interesting to hear talk that Lehman might be the sacrificial lamb for this test. With Macgill and Watson in the squad, they appear to have shown their hands for their preferred replacements.

yep he sure has duncan !! - bowling to the worst cricketing nation [apart from Bangladesh] - he got some wickets to some terrible batting displays and was very expensive in the process - he is a champ alright.

I think Lehmann will be a marginal selection for the Ashes tour right now. The selectors, in choosing Watson, are showing that they're already thinking of the future. My tip for the Ashes touring party is:

Langer
Hayden
Ponting
Martyn
Clarke
Katich
Gilchrist
Warne
Gillespie
Kasprowicz
McGrath
Lee
Watson
Hodge
Tait
Hauritz
Haddin

No Lehmann. He's got the quiet word from Trevor Hohns I think...

3 wickets with trash balls.
The other two were great balls.
Spinning it a long way does not mean you are a good spinner.
Stop looking at the statistics in the paper, and actually watch the cricket. He bowls sh*t.

the whole point is how often does he get wickets with crap balls as u say??? A hell of a lot. Because of the way dips n spins the ball when they play across the line & against the spin its almost impossible for them to not sky it.

Did you see what England were bowling at them though? they had a 3-6 field with Giles bowling 2 feet outside leg stump. Then to Kallis last night they were 2 feet outside off stump with a 7-2 field. Very negative cricket and makes me think they are still at least 2 rungs below the Aussies.

I watched it last night on Foxtel and was generally unimpressed with the Poms tactics and ability

Exactly so. At least the poms have a Plan B (shut the game down) but that is unlikely to work . Giles is the new millenium model of Phil Tuffnel and we remember how well he fared against the early version of this all conquering team. Harmison and Strauss go alright though.

Some fight being shown by the Pakis! The Aussies will almost certainly have to bat again which is a better result than looked likely at the start of the day.

But as I type this - Afridi is run out.

I can't remember a series with as many run outs as this one. Just add it to Bob Woolmer's 10ft list of things to work on to become a competitive test side. Did these guys ever have someone teach them the basics of cricket in U/10s?

And before I got to the submit button, another wicket. Maybe the Aussies won't need to bat again. 4 wickets left and 23 runs to go.
