Thanks mate, I think you are spot on, my short game is patchy and putting could always improve. I find it difficult to practice the short game, the range is not replicating different lies, and the "practice greens" that are set aside for chipping ect are never as receptive as a real green.
How have others worked on their short game?

You can still do it on the range. Pick targets from 10 metres to 110 metres (say in 20 metre spacings and hit all your wedges to each distance. Try to land on the spot you have selected - become very target oriented, because that is what scoring on a golf course is all about. Hit five balls to each spot and move on to the next. When you practice this way, don't experiment stay with your normal stroke. Otherwise this could carry over to the course...staying with one method will give you the lowest score. You have to be very disciplined in this crazy game.

I was very disciplined in my younger days. I developed my swing myself by laying a magazine frame-by-frame spread of Greg Normans swing and replicating each frame in the reflection of my front window. Id do this for hours a day!
I guess considering I have literally played a handful of rounds in the last few years, the hard work as a kid paid off. Muscle memory is a wonderful thing!
I must say, I have used this method on the range in the past, but I dont like the fact that im not able to hit to a green, and I cant vary the lie. But I am gonna go to the range tonight and hit a few buckets with the short sticks and have some fun anyway.
Thanks for the input!

Kwantfm, sorry mate, its mine, you cant have it!!

Interesting way to learn the golf swing...now you will have to learn why it works:-s. Centering, plane & free flow.
If you are at the range you are better off working on the weakest part of your game. If you can't get it done off a perfect lie without pressure, I wouldn't expect to get it done on the course. There is no reason why you can't improvise unlevel lies by changing your posture and ball position....move the ball closer to your feet and your weight over the toes to create a ball below your feet position. The reverse would apply for a ball above the feet. :)

What's your handicap?

19 years ago (when I played a lot) I was off 9 for about a year, but was off 10-11 for about 4 or so years after that. I stopped playing regularly about 13-14 years ago after breaking my wrist. I reckon I could get around Ashlar in around 15-16 over without any hassle these days, and that is only playing 3-4 times a year.

I think I do have a better than basic understanding of the swing, but that came later.
I am looking forward to a few solid hours of wedge work tonight, it has long been my weak point.

Yeah mate, he was born with a condition called congenital nephrotic syndrome. Basically it is a gradual degeneration of the kidneys. Because the kidney is not processing the bodies waste (urine) fluid builds up and the result is the swelling you see in the pic. He just had a kidney transplant on 5th March, and is now doing great. In fact, I took him for his first round on Monday! He loved it! I was 2" off an ace on the day so karma was with us!

Today I found an old pic of my swing, its a frame-by-frame image. I will try and scan it and post it up. I was in my early twenties I think at the time, and a lot skinnier. How depressing! Anyway, I found it interesting to see how much my swing has actually changed. I didnt think it had that much!

I think I'm in the same boat there. I used to get compliments about my swing in my younger days, but stuff has gradually crept in even though I feel like I'm swinging it the same. The joys of old age. Still, I'd be happy if my rusty golf swing looked like yours - can't see the ball, but it looks like it's going a long way from the swing.

Good story about the young bloke too.

Outstanding, I almost feel sorry for the ball. Same swing, different body. Its a real treat to see a golf swing right on plane. I'd like to see a vid of you hitting knock down shots off the back foot with a strong draw shape. What is the trajectory and shape of your normal swing with a driver and 5-iron?

Trajectory is probably just on the high side of average. Shape with the driver has gone from a fade to a draw, and it took a lot of work to do it! With an iron the stock shot is still a fade, but I can draw it if needed. Well, usually :)

Only if you are a single plane swinger... otherwise get it in front of the hip...

one plane = hits ball with shoudlers and pivot.
two plane = hit it with arms and hips.

You CANNOT, I REPEAT, CANNOT be both.

Virge, you are the man!
Awesome little presentation mate, I appreciate that immensely!
I understand completely what you are saying, and will invest some solid time on those points. Will definitely be looking to at the least emulate the swing of old.

Thanks again mate, that was really generous of you to donate your time like that.
