v205

Zigwah, I don't have an official handicap either. But we can help you come up with one to start play with and adjust from there. What do you shoot in a good round and an average round?

ie. i shoot in the 90s on average and into 80s on a good round and I started playing off 20 in the comp and have been cut down to 19 after being 2 under in one of the rounds etc.

We may be able to get that done (Woodlands) if we can entice Falcon to join the Matchplay for the this year, he joined Woodlands last year or late the year before.

FG,
I sent a PM to Bruce, Kev, Jack, Boonie and Falcon.

Kev is in, Bruce has PM'd back and he is in, Boonie is unavailable due to personal commitments and I haven't heard from Jack or Falcon. So I am going to assume that with Bruce added we have our final field.

I work close to Bruce so if nobody has any issues, he and I might do the draw and post it next week.

Any objections???

From just reading the posts of various other matches i just assumed the parties organised together where and when to play?

Is this not the case, and if not what happens here it's not entirely clear.

Flowergirl
24th April 2009, 10:15 AM
In the past we have tried to combine the matchplay games and a get together so we all can meet up. That's probably been a problem and the reason why we haven't completed the 2008 event. Too hard to get a day when we all can play.
It would be great if someone could organise a day and we all can play together.
How do people feel about coming down to Rosebud. I can get us a Sunday tee time - it won't be a comp though - and we can get some of these games played.
How does Sunday the 17th May suit? Mid morning tee time at Rosebud Park. Cheap course - great condition - the best views. We can do a bbq afterwards either at the course or back at my house.
Ok - who can make it? Put your name on the list.

 I like it. Keen to 'go for gold' at the earliest possible convenience. :)

However, it's looking a bit dicey for me. That date would be OK, but my wife is having a baby around the end of June and doesn't seem keen on me going that far from home just in case. (I'm on the Bellarine Peninsula. Sure, it's probably only 50km as the crow flies, but there's the small matter of Port Phillip Bay).

I'll probably have to sit the Rosebud game out, but could be convinced for a hit on the following weekend if it was on a public track a bit closer to Melbourne.

I'm probably out for the entire months of June-July, which could be a problem. Speaking of which, should the organisers consider setting some dates for each round to finish (or at least be firmly scheduled by) to ensure that games get played and things move along? Maybe if the game isn't sorted by a given date there must be a gentlemanly forfeit by the player who is holding things up, or a coin toss if players can't agree on blameworthiness? Just a thought.

Flowergirl
28th April 2009, 11:28 AM
I'm happy to change this to the week after closer to town if this suits. Johhny and I are due to a weekend away. Thought I'd try to get the ball rolling with the Rosebud game. Easy for us to get our game done at anytime.

OK, another suggestion. How about a Mother's Day round next Sunday?

Let's face it. Mother's Day is as soul-less and over-commercialised as Valentines day and should be boycotted at all costs. You'd be much better served getting a round of golf in on a day when half of the poor saps in the golfing community are stuck at home pandering to a ridiculous tradition. Imagine those empty fairways, just waiting for the revolutionary types to throw off the shackles of this silly faux-holiday and stick it to the man.

Andi? Anybody?

Andigold vs LarryLong @ Spring Valley today.

I'm always amazed at how people can remember enough for a hole-by hole recap, I tend to play golf in a daze, which probably explains why I still don't know how far I hit my 9-iron after 10-15 hits with my new set. Anyway, here's what I remember:

#1: I'm nervous, Andi is solid. I miss a 2-foot putt and we halve the hole.
#2: I top my driver, and walk the entire hole thinking "Please don't chop your way around a nice course like this". Putt out for a 9, Andi played safe when he knew the hole was won and goes 1 up.
#3-5: Andi wins two holes with double bogies. 'Nuff said. 3 up. I'm chopping.
#6: Andi picks up (he's playing par) and I get one back. 2 up.
#7: I make a regulation par 5, but it's not good enough as Andi knocks a wedge to less than one foot from 50m out for an easy birdie. Shot of the day. 3 up.
#8-9: Par for me on 8, and we go in for a pie with Andi 2 up.
#10-11: I manage to par both, Andi finds a couple of bunkers and we're all square.
#12: Par 5, Andi plays two good shots on the fairway, I end up in the rough and whack my third one over the back. My first attempt at a chip is a duff. Andi calmly takes a chip and two putts for bogie and the lead.
#14: Long par 3, I manage to find the green and Andi can't make a sand save. All square.
#15: Can't remember what happened here, but I bogie the hole and go one up.
#16: Andi plays a perfect hole for par, I go to water for 7. All square again.
#17: Halved with a pair of bogeys. I'm extremely lucky after hitting a tree and bouncing back into play on my second. All square, one to play.
#18: Andi goes slightly left off the tee, I hit a nervous thin one that goes straight. Andi misses short and right, I hit my second into the bunker. Quality golf. Andi mis-hits approach short of bunker, then recovers with a good chip to give himself a putt. I play a terrible skinny hack in the bunker, which somehow hits the front wall of the bunker and bounces out to the fringe. I'm almost not game to look at Andi after that. I putt on (too soft to chip). Andi two-putts. I have a down-hill 8-footer for the match. I lipped it out, and then lipped out the 3-footer on the way back to hand the win to Andi. He has the good grace to refrain from using the word 'choke' as we shake hands.

All in all, the best man on the day won. I was inconsistent and flashy, and putted terribly all day. Andi was solid, stayed out of trouble most of the time, and went with the smart play when the situation demanded it. As a newcomer to match play, I learned a bit about how you would approach the game. Really enjoyed the company and the invite to play at a great course in excellent condition. Thanks Andi.

They say that second place is the first loser, so I guess that means I'm this year's runner up, right? :)

Good recap Larry. :) Great to meet you and have a hit, it was a bit of an anticlimax the win as I was sure we were going back down the first. :)

I'm glad to finally notch a win in Ozgolf matchplay as I've been towelled up in the first round by Toolish & Johnny Boy the last 2 years, I also won the comp yesterday so was sure I would back up with a shit round today and while I didn't play particularly well I was happy with the result.

You were frightfully unlucky.

If net 71 wins the comp, then there are not too many decent golfers at Spring Valley.

Larry,

You were frightfully unlucky.

If net 71 wins the comp, then there are not too many decent golfers at Spring Valley.

Andi, see you in round 2 after I put down JD at the Southern House of Pain.

We could meet somewhere between Spring Valley and Southern to be fair? How does Playing the 9 holes left at Moorabbin twice sound ?

So perhaps it's a case of great course, shit golfers - shit course, great golfers?????

Why not play 16 at southern 18 times, it's nearly as good as anything at Moorabbin.

I've joined you Larry

Hats off to JDFrank. A superb exhibition of driving awesomeness at Southern today for a 2 up win. We played off the stick as both our handicaps are 12

We played the comp of par also and he had +2 versus my -2.

Sitting on the 17th, I had a 2 ft putt to square the game but took the gas and missed. 1 down coming down the last, took a wipe for a 2 down loss

Good luck to whoever plays him next as he is the best 12 handicapper I have ever seen. JD, put the gap wedge away. It doesn't work

I take solice in the fact that sms is still my bitch

I have PM'd Zig and it appears that we may have to flip a coin to get this match played as it is challenging for Zig to get to Melbourne and near impossible for me to get to rural Vic. I think we are both comfortable with that outcome.

Can anyone suggest a fair way that we can decide the winner (other than playing the match outright), I'm conscious of the VIC members poor track record of getting this thing played and neither Zig or myself want to be the road block.

Any suggestions

Speaking of which, should the organisers consider setting some dates for each round to finish (or at least be firmly scheduled by) to ensure that games get played and things move along? Maybe if the game isn't sorted by a given date there must be a gentlemanly forfeit by the player who is holding things up, or a coin toss if players can't agree on blameworthiness? Just a thought.

Just throwing it out there again.

Don't think that's fair on kev. He's obviously available to play, Swanny obviously isn't, so kev goes through. No need for a coin toss, and it would just complicate things further if Swanny wins the toss and Jd_Frank can't organise a game with him in the next month (which seems likely).

Cut-off for Rnd 2 will be Sunday the 6th of December, all matches still outstanding after this date will be decided by coin toss performed by myself and witnessed by Bruce.

Cutoff for Semi's will be Sunday the 20th of December, all matches still outstanding after this date will be decided by coin toss performed by myself and witnessed by Bruce.

Final will not be decided by coin toss but will be played. It would be great if this could be completed by the end of 2009, if not,it will be no later than the first Sunday in 2010.

I hope that the VIC team don't mind me taking this stance as I really want this thing completed as we have been unable to get our collective sh!t together for teh last few years and it is making us look like a rable.

Take that attitude into next year and things will work a lot better. Everybody enjoys a bit of tough love. :)

My only thought is that you should only use the coin toss if both players are keen to play but can't get a time together. Anybody who proposes a serious tee time wins if their opponent doesn't respond. Anybody who doesn't respond to your PM should forfeit as well.

As we had an number of odd entries...er I mean an odd number of entries.

Kev and JD_Frank go through to the semi's by default.

I would suggest that Kev take on AndiG and JD_Frank take on V205 so that we can get this bugger completed.

Anyone who doesn't think that this is a good idea, post why.

Congrats Andi and bad luck Kev, will await the result of the other semi b/w JD and V205

Let's see.. I have played with JD before and he flushed it around Southern and only a minor brain fade kept him from a score that would have challenge for the comp of the day..sneaky good golfer is JD. I have played and been beaten by Vincent before in last years comp. He won the match on the last hole with a 25 footer for par for the win. He put on a putting display that any scratch marker would have been thrilled with and would prove a worthy adversary, pending handicap that is.

Let's get this thing done.

Well what a great day yesterday was to get together with Kev (and Bruce) at Sunshine Golf Club to play our Semi Final. The sun was shining and the social golfing hordes were all hitting off in front of us. After watching 1 guy in the group in front take about 5 shots to get out of range we thought this’ll be long day. J

I had to give Kev 3 shots and they came on 10, 14 & 17 and as we hit off on the back nine I was hoping to turn around even or only 1 down. There was some good golf played on this nine and I parred the 10th & 11th, bogeyed the 12th and parred the 13th while Kev wasted the shot he had on 10 after he bladed his 5th shot across the green and picked up. Then on 14 with another shot he birdied the hole with a great approach that just left a 6 inch tap in. I parred this hole also however it wasn’t enough for his net 2. On 15 my bogey beat his double and after 6 holes I was 2 over and only 2 up on a 22 handicapper. 16 had a temporary green that I hit in reg and thinking “hit it hard” when over the putt I knocked it off the green and ended up gifting Kev a half with a pair of bogeys. On 17 Kev had a shot and I promptly sliced the ears off my drive and put it into the water, Kev’s bogey (nett 4) beat my triple from the reload. On 18 we all hit great approaches to be within about 10 feet and we all made regulation pars. I was 1 up at the turn and +4 in the days Par comp.

The next 9 holes saw the worst golf and as I held it together a bit better than Kev I was Dormie 4 after winning the 1st, 3rd & 5th in very unspectacular fashion. Kev rallied to win the 6th with a solid par but after I conceded his putt for a half on 7 it was all done 3 & 2. I went on to bogey 8 & 9 to finish the nine -4 and even for the day which was a disappointing finish.
Thanks to Kev & Bruce and I’d recommend Sunshine for a hit it’s a nice course and as Bruce said “how’s the serenity” J

Bruce & Kev played with Vincent in his win over Bruce 2 Ozgolf rounds ago & Bruce & I were with him in his last Ozgolf round at Spring Valley.

Vincent played both days off a 19 handicap and would have had around 38 - 40 points in each outing. Bruce, Kev & I thought that a reduction to 16 was fair to Vincent and other Ozgolfers.

If not (and I suspect not) then I think we need to set a deadline of next Sunday 20th December or Chappy should toss the coin & I'll take on the winner. I'm on holidays from Friday until 4th Jan so will happily travel anywhere, anytime to play the final.

It was a very close encounter but I just snuck home in the end, 2up. I think it's fair to sat both of us could have played much better but it was still a good match, all square after 16.

Best part was playing 18 holes in 3 hours with good company, thanks v205!

Finally got the matchplay done with JDF (me 16 vs JDF 10). It may seem like a close game but his solid game (flusher swing like Chappy said)that did somewhat 'badly' was still a better combination than my inconsistent game that I was trying to make something out of and unfortunately no magic putting to save the day.

Well played JDF. Good luck in the finals.

Fantastic, I'm pleased this match is done and dusted.

Sounds like it was a struggle for both. I agree JD has a very solid game and his handicap is on the way down. Though Vincent if your putter was running as hot as it was the day you beat me, he may have been in trouble.

OK so let's try and get this done before the new year.

If not possible, no later than the the end of the first week of Jan.

Well - I would have thought that the winner would have been on to claim his crown as Victorian Ozgolf Champion 2009.
Must be a bit shy.;)

We had a great time today out at Settlers Run. Great course and set up and played in perfect weather conditions. And how is this for service - while Johnny Boy and I were on the practise green one of the pros cleaned our clubs for us. Now that is what I call service.

John didn't have to best day out - I won't post his score.;) I was happy with my 35 points seeing that I only had 3 points after the first 3 holes. It is a short course off the front tees though but still I did play pretty straight all day.

As I said - I will let the players involved in the final give out the result.

Look forward to getting this happening again next year.

Finally have had a chance to sit down and reveal the results - and it was a narrow victory to yours truly, 2&1. As FG said, Settlers Run is a great course but played quite short and although the fairways were reasonably wide, if you missed them you were in trouble (and that happened a lot).

AndiG got off to a great start and was 2up after 2, and was generally either 2up or 1up during the front 9, staying 1up at the turn. I had a good run from about the 8th hole to 12th, where I went from 2down to 2up. AndiG pulled it back to 1down on about the 15th, and then we headed to 17 with me 1up and needing a good hole as Andi had a shot coming down the last. Andi did his best to convince me I had the game as good as won before teeing off the 17th, playing some of golf's finest mind games. Unfortunately, in the end he put a couple of drives into the drink and when I found the fairway off the tee Andi graciously conceeded the game.

It was a great day out and it was great to meet some more ozgolfers. Thanks Chappy for organising the event and I look forward to the opportunity to defend the title and thanks Andi for the match and organising the game.

Sorry to Andi, FG and John for not staying after the game, it was poor form and embarrassing, but you'll be glad to know I was able to return my missus' keys to her and then celebrate my victory by going shoe shopping.............awesome. Anyway, I'm now enjoying my long-awaited victory beer and ready to take on all-comers in 2010.

Wel played Dave. Had a great time even though you and Andi were very keen on going into snake territory too much for my liking.
And no probs with you leaving early - shoe shopping!!!! You have been punished enough!!

andigold
30th December 2009, 08:39 AM
It was a solid win to Dave and he played some pretty good golf in the middle section. I had my chances early and could have easily been 4 up after 6 but for a couple of missed 4 foot putts. That's matchplay though I didn't capitalise when I was on top and once Dave was in the groove he was just too good for me.

Thanks also to Flowergirl & Johnnyboy for the company and Chappy for the organising skills. Look forward to next years comp.
