View Full Version : Qld: 2009 McLeod Cup, Saturday April 18, 7:45a & 11a

AndyP
27th March 2009, 01:27 PM
This will be the sixth year we have played it as a group, and only AndyLo has played them all. I've been a bit slow to organise this year, but initiallythey had the date as Easter Saturday which would have ruled several of us out. Plus my interest in golf hasn't been up there.

I've called the club and the timesheet probably isn't open to guests until two weeks beforehand, with fellows having access next week. A contact at the club will hopefully call me tomorrow to confirm.

I hope we can get some full groups in the morning. I'd expect the comp to be a cheap one as usual too (<$15).

Of course I have to mention that three of us have held the cup (AndyP, Choppa, AndyLo).

McLeod has got back to me with some times that we can play in. Unfortunately, only two groups in the morning field (7:42, 7:48 ) and the other three are at 11am.

I know PeteyD has a time restriction and has to play morning, and therefore BrisVegas does too.

I'm sure most would like the earlier slot, but it's unfortunately it's not possible. Personally I had a preference for the morning, but the later times don't rule me out from playing.

Please let me know if you have a strong preference for a particular session as soon as possible, so I can reorganise my drafted groups and get back to the club.

So you don't mind either session, but you want after 8am, which means you don't want 7:45a, because that's what I've got in the morning session, which is before 8 not after, but still the morning session, which is what you don't mind, but don't want. :?

Eag's, I don't know if you have already called or not, but there is one free spot in our four groups. It's in the late slot at the moment, but I'll send a couple of PMs/SMSes to see if those that were happy for either time before can still play later.

I had a hit in the McLeod cup today also. It is my old track before becoming a mega member at Robina. It was great to see a few familiar Ozgolf faces there. Sounds like you boys enjoyed your day. I found a little bit of form today after playing poorly in recent months (75-69).

Course played very long today withour much run, but I agree the greens were super!

Hey Dave, I'd never met you before, so I didn't say hello on the 2nd tee. Eag's told me who you were afterwards. Good to see you had a good score.

I thought the course played relatively tough today. If you missed the fairway or greens, you were more often that not in some pretty nasty rough (or in my case even worse). The slower pace of the greens, compared to Headland last week, took some adjusting though.

We all seemed to have some good patches in my group, but we also had some bad holes that screwed our scores. It was my first time playing with goonie, and I was very impressed with his short game. Although he didn't have a great day of it, he looked like he had the game to be several shots lower than a 10 handicap.

I was having a pretty good back nine, and prior to my 9I approach, poidda stated that it was going to be the shot of the day. It was easily my worst, as I hit it fat and into the drink 40m in front. Mission accomplished, poid. It was worth a good chuckle. Lucky I'm not a grumpy prick.....

Thanks for the game Poid, Rich and Lee. I had a good time out there.

Thanks to everyone for getting out there today. I don't like our chances next year of being grouped together, but at least we are still in the good books with the club for not having withdrawals.

Phew! That's my big OZgolf game organised for the year. Over to you, Jarro.

FWIW, I was thinking there should be another potential major in August (to fill in the gap to Champs), even if it's a social round in August at somewhere like Northlakes. If we decide on a date early enough before the round, we should easily get four groups plus.

Actually, looking at the BDGA website the Frank Foley at Gailes on July 26 could be an option. It has had major status before.

My 2004 win was 64, as was Chops in 2006. A-Lo had 63 in 2007. It's worth mentioning that Chops had 64 for runner-up in 2007.

Thanks to the guys I played with senecio, Rusty and andylo. Rusty and Senecio were the kings of provisional balls (and hit them so much better) and andylo kept his head in the game after a 8 on our 6th hole... a birdie on the next helped.

Thanks to my caddie for getting me there with minutes to spare.

I was surprised the scores where that bad. I could have shot anything with a short game. The only two up and downs I had all day were from the sand on 1 and from the front on 18 with a gallery, I had 8 bladed chips during the round I crossed a couples twice. On the plus side I hit 10 fairways (6 GIR) but I only used driver once so the new fairway got a work out:( It was a weird day even my irons were off but my putter saved me.

Rusty is getting quick at unpacking his car too;)

Ok, seeings as we are telling tragic stories, this one has to be considered play of the day.

on our 17th hole, the 370m 8th, the green surrounded by cavernous bunkers,
1. Nudgee hits a decent drive
2. then leaves his approach shot to the right.
3. attempts the magnificent lob shot (no other option) and gets it a bit heavy, into the bunker, and gets a little cranky with himself. If only he had of known......
4. has a Hitler
5. another go from the bunker, Blades it 70m (measured with google earth) across the green into the previous fairway on that flat section where everyone wants to drive to. how the hell he got out of a 6ft deep bunker with bladed shot i do not know.
6. an almost full pitch with his lob wedge he carries the greenside bunker, then the green, then the other greenside bunker and is virtually in the same spot he was for #3
7. attempts same shot as #3, pulls it of magnificently, leaving a 3 foot putt
8. solid putt - best 8 i have ever seen

Yes mate, i know my triple on the easy par 3 was worse, but it was so pathetic its not even worth telling.

pleased it wasn't just me who had issues with the 8th... My tale of the tape:-

1. Drive down the middle, 130m out.
2. flubbed 8 iron 60m, just short of hazard.
3. hit (what I thought was a perfect) lob wedge and caught the top lip of left bunker.
4. hit ok bunker shot and caught the top lip of left bunker.
5. hit ok bunker shot and caught the top lip of left bunker.
6. hit bad bunker shot and caught the face of left bunker.
7. hit ok bunker shot and finally got out of left bunker, finished 20 feet.
8. lagged close from fringe
9. tap in for 9. (lost the hole to Peteyd's 7  )

My 8th was

4 iron to short and right about 40m from green
60deg wedge into hole, never looked like missing!! Par!!That's the 17th then Iain, but our 8th hole played.

I'd like another pitch-in one of these days. Especially if it was for eagle.

1. My 8th was driver right, but safe, leaving me 175+ to the green.
2. I hit 3W since it was into a breeze to an elevated green and missing to the back is safer. I put it into the right trees where the water hazard is.
2B. My provisional with the 7W hit the front of the green and ended up off the back. Who knows where the 3W would have gone if I had have hit it right.
3. Found the original on the other side of the hazard fortunately. Unfortunately it was sitting down in a hole making it impossible to go at the green with the right bunkers blocking the line. Small punch to 20m short of green was my safe shot.
4. 7I bump and run up to the green and into the hole.

I've always had trouble with the 8th, because it is a long hole for me. I have to approach a well protected green with a long club. It's index 2 or something, isn't it?

poidda had a fun time in the traps like Vegas did.

1. fairway wood into the little pocket left but runs under the trees.
2. chip out but not far enough still blocked by the trees.
3. hook a 7 iron around the trees and land on the fringe of the green between the traps
4. Knock my putt 1m past on the up slope.
5. made the return putt.

Its the first time I have not been plugged in the bunkers, and my lowest score ;)
