I reckon we can get 50 one hit wonders in a day pretty easily. The sad thing is this will probably inspire about 30 iTunes purchases (especially 1980's songs).

Add them to the list.

Would Denis Leary's song, "Asshole", count? He has been somewhat successful, but I don't think he had another musical hit?

Candy was also a hit for Cameo. Not as good as Word Up!, but still a solid song by from a man who wears a leather jockstrap outside of his leather pants.

Come on DC. I'd expect more from you. This isn't even their most famous song. Free Bird was a top 40 hit as both the original and live versions of the song. Saturday Night Special also made the top 40 charts.

Where's Jarro?

Geez guys, your definition of ‘one hit wonder’ is extremely loose. You have 3 artists listed who have had multiple albums go platinum, then you mis-spell Lynyrd Skynyrd, a band that has had 4 platinum albums.

Unfortunately, Billy Ray Cyrus is a multi-platinum artist.

Dexy's Midnight Runners had a #1 hit in the UK with Geno 2 years before Come On, Eileen. They have had 2 or 3 other top 10's.

The Rembrandts had a Top 20 hit off their 1st album called 'Just The Way It Is', which was 5 years before 'I'll Be There For You'.

Don't worry SMS, I'm just here to keep it real.

Mate, there is heaps of crap information out there. I can still remember competing in a large club trivia night & being told I was wrong because they insisted that Alanis Morissette’s 1st album was ‘Jagged Little Pill’. I told them she had released 2 albums previously in Canada, but they insisted I was wrong because the book said so.

How foolish were they to think I would be wrong.

Technically, you are wrong. Her first albums were under the moniker "Alanis".

Alanis Morisette's first album was Jagged Little Pill.

They got you on a technicality.

Technically, you are wrong. Her first albums were under the moniker "Alanis".

Alanis Morisette's first album was Jagged Little Pill.

They got you on a technicality.

I would argue that Alanis Morisette (the person) did release two albums before "Jagged Little Pill"; the fact that they were release under the name "Alanis" is irrelevent. She still released them. It was still her name and her singing. Next they are going to say that Madonna Louise Ciccone didn't release a single album, because they were all under the name "Madonna". Not the mention The Eagles, now being known simply as Eagles.

God help us if we have to count Prince's number of albums; he changes his name every year or so!

It's a blunt - a joint basically, but rolled up in a cigar (A Dutch Master cigar actually, hence the name).

I was just giving him crap, but it is open for interpretation.

Her other albums were only released in Canada, and in reading up on this JLP is considered her debut album.

The question needs to be more specific. What if she had released an independent album? Would that count too? What if she released an album under the title "Henno's Girl's Juggs"? Would it count as an Alanis Morisette album if it was just her singing?

What if she didn't suck?

But I don't, and she does.

I've tried very hard to ignore all things to do with both Brian and Ryan Adams. Summer of 69 wasn't even his biggest hit!

Crash Test Dummies should be removed as well. Although, after reading up on them, they acheived bigger success in Aus and Europe than they did at home.

God help us if we have to count Prince's number of albums; he changes his name every year or so!He's always been Prince Rogers Nelson. ;) He only had Prince and 0(+-> (when he was seeing out the contract with Sony and had 'Slave' written on his cheeks). Of course, that doesn't mean he's not weird.

Plenty on the list that are not one-hit wonders. I guess if the criteria is that you don't hear the song on the radio 20 years later then it's a one hit wonder....

I think you are forgetting a few. What about when he was The Artist Formerly Known As Prince and the simply The Artist. After that he became that weird symbol.

I think you are forgetting a few. What about when he was The Artist Formerly Known As Prince and the simply The Artist. No album was released using either of those "names". They would have been names used by the media (as well as TAFKAP), because it was too hard to say/print the symbol.

There are two problems with a list like this. We are Australians, so we are only thinking about Australian charts. So, we think bands like Crash Test Dummies and Flock of Seagulls were One Hit Wonders, as no other songs got airplay here. They fit the criteria in Australia, but not in other countries.

Once upon a time, it wasn't hard to predict which artists would be one-hit wonders. They would appear out of nowhere, they would a promo tour and perform/mime their one song on Countdown, do lots of radio interviews, but never do any live shows. Remember Roger Voudouris on Countdown?

There are a number of websites devoted to this subject. Most of them are US based, and include people like Divinyls and Kylie Minogue.

The other problem is the modern trend of producers releasing songs under a different name for each project. So you get 'artists' like MARRS and Timelords, who have done lots of music subsequently, but not under those names.

Some genuine OHW's off the top of my head...

Zager and Evans - In the Year 2525
Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky
Jennifer Paige - Rush
Jennifer Rush - The Power of Love (wish her song was called Paige!)
Mr Mister - Broken Wings
Benny Mardones - Into The Night
Roger Voudouris - Get Used To It
Alan o'Day - Undercover Angel (look him up on Wikipedia. You won't believe the other songs he wrote, but didn't perform)
Bertie Higgins - Key Largo
Rupert Holmes - Escape (where's that worst ever songs thread?)

I'll leave up to SMS whether he wants to include The Weathergirls - It's Raining Men, as one of the singers was also the lead singer of Blackbox (but didn't appear in the videos).

Wikipedia is an amazing source for this type of trivia. I love this sort of stuff.

my vote, dunno the artist, but song is "Video killed the Radio Star".

and you can throw
Men at work: Land down under

How young are you Wet Coaster!!!!

I learned to drum to Men At Work's Greatest Hits Album!! 'Land Down Under' wasn't even their best song! 'Who can it be now'(#1 US 1982), 'Dr Heckle and Mr Jive' (#28 US), 'Overkill' (#3 US) and 'It's a mistake' (#6 US).

Their 2nd Album Cargo was #1 in the US while their first album Business As Usual was still holding #3. And they won a Grammy.

If I remember correctly 'Land Down Under' was released but did nothing, and then was re-released due to the Americas Cup and went HUGE!

Extra bonus points for anyone who can think of a tune that has been a OHW twice, as the original and a cover. I can think of two candidates, but without looking up the artists(which would be unfair) I can't be absolutely certain. One is a bit obscure, but I'm surprised the other hasn't been mentioned yet for either version.

I'll keep quiet for the moment and see if any suggestions come up.

In the meantime, two absolute classics

Golden Earring - Radar Love
Al Stewart - Year of the Cat

plus another classic that shouldn't be on this list, but in Oz it is. Blue Oyster Cult were very big in USA, but I can't recall ever hearing any other song of theirs on Oz Radio except Don't Fear The Reaper.

Sorry for that last one, but I think it's safe. I know that no one want so be the one that tells me about the Frog's other hits!

Forever Young - Alphaville and Youth Group

Was that not one of the worst covers versions ever from Youth Group. It is like they copied it tone for tone. It wasn't a cover - it was a imitation.

Fugly Osbourne also did Papa don't preach in exactly the same style as Madonna.

Like a weak decaf soy latte - why bother ?

Gary Numan! Cars! 1 hit!??? Cars was his second #1 FFS! Are Friends Electric was his first #1 in 1979

Agree 100%. The original was a good song. The imitation simply sucked.

Gary Numan's first number one hit was Cars.

Are 'Friends' Electric was a number one for "Tubeway Army", which happened to be Gary Numan's group, not Gary Numan. Sorry Bruce. (Although Gary did have other UK hits)

Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby.

Surely this is the ultimate one hit wonder, given that the music was a rip off from "Under Pressure" and he didn't acknowledge it. Got his arse sued, and ended up selling shoes for a living.

The main problem with this argument is that he had a second 'hit', based on Play That Funky Music, which I think was called Cruising in my 5.0. It was woeful as well.

Regarding my double one hit wonder question, Forever Young is very good call. I hadn't thought about it. While Youth Group are still around, on the evidence so far, more hits are unlikely.

I was thinking about Ring My Bell, firstly by Anita Ward, and then by Collette, and also Don't Leave Me This Way, by Thelma Houston and then the Communards. I'm not sure whether T Houston had any other hits or not.

I'll concede my error on Golden Earring. I'd forgotten that Twilight Zone was by them.

Smalltown Boy is a timeless classic from the 80's. It gets remixed every 5 years or so and is always good.

Also, from Wikipedia - one hit wonders - British, but interesting all the same.

Channel 4's "50 Greatest One Hit Wonders"
A 2006 television poll, conducted by Channel 4 in the UK, asked viewers to select their favourite one hit wonder from a shortlist of 60 [4]. Respondents could also vote by e-mail to select a song that was not on the original list, if they so wished. The top 50 were:

"Kung Fu Fighting" – Carl Douglas
"99 Red Balloons" – Nena
"Because I Got High" – Afroman
"Sugar, Sugar" – The Archies

"Woo Hoo" – The Rock-A-Teens
"Japanese Boy" – Aneka
"Save Your Love" – Renee and Renato
"Brimful of Asha" – Cornershop
Even this list is riddled with inaccuracies, since at least fifteen of the fifty acts ranked in the Top 50 by the poll had multiple Top 40 hits in the UK singles chart, thus disqualifying them from the appellation 'one-hit wonder', although the success of the other hits was (with one very notable exception) of a lesser measure than those included in the poll:

Millie reached No. 30 with 'Sweet William' in 1964.
Lieutenant Pigeon reached No. 17 with 'Desperate Dan' in 1972.
Carl Douglas reached No. 35 with 'Dance the Kung Fu' in 1974 and No. 25 with 'Run Back' in 1977.
The Buggles reached No. 16 with 'Living in the Plastic Age' and No. 38 with 'Clean Clean' in 1980.

Shampoo reached No. 27 with 'Viva La Megababes' in 1994, No. 21 with 'Delicious' in 1995, No. 36 with 'Trouble (1995)' in 1995, and No. 25 with 'Girl Power' in 1996, thus notching up no fewer than five hits including two different versions of 'Trouble'.
Babylon Zoo reached No. 17 with 'Animal Army' and No. 32 with 'The Boy with the X-ray Eyes' in 1996.
Cornershop reached No. 23 with 'Sleep on the Left Side' in 1998 and No. 37 with 'Lessons Learnt From Rocky I To Rocky III' in 2002.
Baha Men reached No. 14 with 'You All Dat' in 2001 and No. 16 with 'Move It Like This' in 2002.
Afroman reached No. 10 with 'Crazy Rap' in 2002.
Eamon (featuring Ghostface) reached No. 27 with 'Love Them' in 2004.
Most notably, The Timelords reached the UK Top 40 eight times—once under that name; once as The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu; once as 2K; and five times, including one #1, under their best-known name, The KLF.

Not that this counts, but Trevor Horn went on to become one of the U.K.'s top producers. He was responsible for Franky Goes To Hollywood's success, as well as producing & writing with Seal.

He was one of the first producers in the world to use polyphonic synths to put a wash behind every recording. Quite a clever guy in the studio.

No reports of Canadian terrorists in Canberra this morning.

I am happy to report that this song was forgotten about shortly after posting.

However, like Elton John, the bitch is back.

So, if I hear a Mr Whippy van playing Glen Mediros, it's really full of deisel, fertilizer and a crazed canuck on his way to Canberra.

Thunderclap Newman - Something in the Air

Guilty confession time - I actually really like this song. Don't know what it is, might be the really incongruous instrumental in the middle of the song.

Can't believe I forgot this one!

'What'll We Be Singing in the Eighties' - Terry McCarthy and the Monitors

Considering he's my dad's cousin after all.
Probably more famous for other things of course. He became and advertising guru - anyone remember 'I can feel a XXXX coming on'.

And the Blakeney twins, from Neighbours but more famously (for me anyway) from Wombat!

They did release another song 'Nobody Told Me' but it did squat. My 2nd cousin appeared in the clip though.
