Sorry to hear Dave, guess you sort of knew it was coming when QANTAS bought Jetset. As usual QANTAS staff sacked for the cheaper jetset staff. They did the same thing when they moved the Heavy maintenance out of Sydney. The staff in Victoria are not QANTAS staff, cheaper contract labour.

Hope you find a new job quick. I have a friend that works for Flight Centre up there. I can find out if anything is about there. I will let you know if I hear anything.

Dave, be careful what you do with it, the idea is that it is compensation for the fact that you might not get a job for a long time. The waiting period for the dole is quite a while as well, make sure you go see them immediately.

If you are also thinking of putting some of it aside apart from more smokes, cheap rum and expensive hookers, get some financial advise as the redundancy payment is taxed differently, than normal income.

DC, i know a few blokes who got the flick and they turned to security work. they reckon its a doddle and the pay is very very good (for what you do).

One bloke was getting $25 an hour for sitting in a control room all night watching video cameras, and he took his laptop with him and watched DVD's.

Cost about $800 to get the license, and is probably a handy thing to have for getting casual work on the side, and suits a golfer.

As far as danger goes, its all non confrontational now (mostly), you actually aint expected to biff anyone anymore

Fishman Dan
18th January 2009, 08:25 AM
I agree with Mark that there are 'cooshy' security jobs, but you'd have to work in some funny places to get there.

I was doing some work in Perth, and we wound up in the basement of one of our managed buildings (the "QV1" building on St Georges Tce). We ended up spying on all sorts of things all around the building, including the cops who were doing a bust on a car they had pulled over with an unmarked patrol. Basically they had about a dozen plasma's looking in all sorts of directions, with remote controls to scan the grounds, an internet connection, as as Mark said, if you wanted to watch DVD's all night there would be very little to stop you (just hope that someone doesn't smashing the place up when you're not watching).

Having said that, it was 2:30am and you would be working crap shifts, even in you were in a good location.

tough call... I knocked back a deal for about half what you were offered a couple of weeks ago. I think if I was offered 10months pay (mostly tax free) I think I'd walk. It'd knock a big hole in your mortgage and you could spend some time with the kids while you look for something else.

If an offer were to come my way it would only be a couple of months at best. I'm thinking hard about it guys, but I had to make a call on the spot for an end of July redundancy (into the next financial year is a good thing too). The boss will be telling his superiors that I'm there until the end of August (end of September guaranteed, if I want).

I don't think I'll have too much trouble getting a job, especially if I'm happy to accept a bit of a pay cut. I'll spend the next couple of weeks assessing my options and looking at the job market.

henno
6th May 2010, 10:57 AM
Take the payout, find a job you really like for less pay, use the redundancy money to subsidise your income to your current levels until you are able to get pay increases in your new job/career/whatever. 10 months pay could last a really long time.

These days, in IT, it's not fantasy stuff. My workplace has been laying off good people for two years in little spurts every couple of months. I'm 2 months away from 7 years (and roughly 3 months extra payout) which was my main reason for staying.

As always, it comes down to individual/family circumstances and prospects at the company or elsewhere. The timing wasn't right for me, but if it'd been a chunk of money the size they're offering Andy, I think I'd have winged it. Boeing's redundancy is very generous and it sounds like Andy's mgmt have held off on this offer til his 7 years was up. Hard to say whether staying or going is doing the "right thing".

Agreed poid - the more often you change job, the more often you pay rises imo. It's pretty easy to negotiate salary up front, as opposed to 'asking' for more. If i was offered 10 months salary to go, i'm not sure it's a decision i'd have to make.... Why stay? what advantage? In all likelihood, they're trying to downsize whilst they can afford etc. From where i stand, i'd take the cash and then be asking for a higher salary at a new company before diner.

I chose to stay because it's low risk. I can't afford to be out of a job with two kids and a wife that works part-time, and she is very nervous about me not having a job. As I said, I don't know what potential jobs are out there yet. I'm certainly not as confident as you guys are about being able to walk into a job that pays more.

As I said, I don't know what potential jobs are out there yet. I'm certainly not as confident as you guys are about being able to walk into a job that pays more.

Here's another perspective. The longer you stay in a job and don't do the new job thing every decade or so, the less confident you will get and the harder it will be when you have to. Make sense? (didn't to me)

What I mean is, if you and the wife are nervous now when you're given the choice to take 10 months pay at your own discretion, than how nervous are you going to be in another few years when you don't have the choice, and you don't get the 10 months offer, and you haven't had a job interview for 15 years, and you can't afford the time to find the ideal job. You'll pushing 40, and flipping burgers at the OzGolf Champs. hmmm burgers.

Anyway, my point is. Obviously they're shedding staff, so it's far from a job for life. You've been offered a massive payout (possibly the biggest I have heard of without having to do 35 years in a government job). You're still young and not stale in the work force so would be very attractive to any employer. The longer you stay in one job, the harder it always is. Great if you've got a job for life and you don't have to worry about it, but there's no such thing any more.

From what I can see, I think it's the opposite. I think it's Low risk to take the money and run, and High risk to actually stay.

Choppa
7th May 2010, 08:53 AM
Tough call Andy. Leanne recently got a redundacy after 16 years at Suncorp and I was very close to getting mine after 13 years at QR. For us that was the absolute best case scenario. I understand that in your situation you have to think about stability with your wife only working part time. I wouldn't be too concerned about getting another job though if you did take it. Just take a look around at all the incompetent morons around who all manage to have jobs. You are clearly not a very big moron so you shouldn't have any dramas at all ;)

The longer you stay in one place the less likely you are able to make the move. Have been on IT the last 12 years or so. Every 3 or 4 years, I do salary corrections. I move to a new company and get my pay rise. It has been easier in WA but Rudd's new tax grab for votes in the East that may change.

I've kept up with inflation and cost of living in that manner. Ultimately, you have to do what you are comfortable with and the circumstances you are in. For me a 10 month payout is better than 3 months long service leave. From the company's perspective they've done their legal and moralistic obligations. If they have to pay out later all the better.

AndyP
7th May 2010, 09:14 AM
Just to clarify the payout component, the longer I stay, the greater this payout will be. This is a payment that I am entitled to. It consists of all of my leave (including long service leave), in addition to the severance pay, which is based on the length of service. There is no special payment.

I work on projects. The project I am currently on is coming to a close, however there is the potential for future projects here. So I'll either take a redundancy soon, get made redundant closer to the end of this project (end of year) or get work in a new project (if new business is won) within the company, which would see me work here for several more years.

So it's not quite the situation depicted in some of your posts. Anyway, as I said, I made an instant call yesterday which sees me work here a little longer, but I've got a little time to think about it before I'm asked again. Thanks for the advice.

so a large portion of the payout is entitlements that you are owed, even if you resign?

makes a bit more sense then, as you're not missing out on anything that won't be available to you later.

AndyP
7th May 2010, 11:38 AM
so a large portion of the payout is entitlements that you are owed, even if you resign?Correct. The actual redundancy (severance pay) is 4 weeks for each of the first four years, and 3 weeks for every year after that. I've just passed 7 years (long service leave payout kicks in after 7), so it sits at 25 weeks, although a workmate told me they don't do partial years, so it could be 28 weeks. It's still a large enough amount that I wouldn't want to resign, if I wasn't going to a better paying job.

And I hope you aren't being paid for this time you are spending bludging on Ozgolf.
Long lunch boss?

for sure 25 weeks pay is a significant chunk of cash. The statutory payment (and what I was offered) is a flast two weeks per year...

since when?

Andy is still getting 'overs' but 2 weeks flat is incorrect

Looks like everything has "fallen" into place you in the long run. Wasn't the sunshine coast your preferred destination originally ?

Congrats Shaun. Make sure your new place doesn't have a spare bedroom. It'll keep 'drop-ins' to a minimum. ;)

Different club. Different role. Assistant GM.

Staying at the current joint as a casual on Sundays for a few months at least.

If this is the course that has been talking about moving house for a few years I fully expect the current designer to get the boot and RCGD hired before the end of June.

You are way too busy for a small contract like that.
