I'm focussing on the top courses I will play in 2009 - can't live in the past :-)

March
Tasmania (last time 87)
Royal Hobart (last time 87)
Barnbougle (first time)

Coolangatta-Tweed with a workmate who is a member.

Brookie if I get an invite from BV :-)

Then it will be up to the discounts on ISG for whatever the resort courses in SEQ decide to offer up cheap.

15, but I have never played north of Sydney (ok, 9 holes at Coolum) or west of Melbourne.

And how Gold Creek makes that list I'll never know. Condition is super, but it holds 1/10th the interest of a good country track like Narrandera.

I've got nothing! Closest I came.... Used the driving range at Laguna Quays.

Turtle Point at Laguna Whitsundays, long a top ranked course with exceptional playing surfaces dropped down the rankings largely as a result of deterioration in course conditioning. It is to be hoped that finances will permit this layout to return to its former glory and the proposed second and third courses to be completed at this tropical paradise.

They couldn't even manage to water the tee for the driving range! I hit half a bucket & walked away!
I was going to have a round on the day, but from what I saw from the road I decided against it. I pulled over & walked onto one of the greens.... More weeds than my front garden! Might as well keep driving & have a round at Proserpine instead.
I highly doubt they'll ever complete the other courses, they can't even afford to maintain the one they currently have.
The whole "Laguna International Airport" thing has quietened down of late too.
Good to see they were honest in their review.

Can't wait for the new course to open up here. First 9 will be open mid next year, and the remainder early 2010. :D

FFS!!! Who are Keperra paying?

I don't have a problem with Keperra on the list and also believe Pacific should be in there as well - I do have a problem though with Palm Meadows in that 100 - i think the term 'overpriced goat track' would more accurately describe PM...

shazza_rs
29th December 2008, 09:48 PM

Haven't been at Pacific for a while but it was always a better course than Keperra's main course...unless things have changed dramatically.

Well BV we will have to get out in the NY. I am keen to see what all the fuss is about.
I have a cousin (of sorts) who is either an assistant pro or a trainee out there - have to check with the olds again.

OK maybe I was a bit too negative...the condition of PM is similar to most Brissie members courses [the course / fairways and surrounds actually remind me a lot of Redcliffe] and it does have in its favour the fact that it has a hotel across the road.....I do think that $75 for a round on that type of track is over the top and if Shavey is right, the price next year will be over the $100 mark- in terms of value for money for a course we play the champs on and having visitors flying in from all corners I feel sure we can do better..

damoocow

50 buckeroos

$50 - interesting, was that an internet price or off the street ? - 2 x Champs rounds at that price is reasonable I would think - you would think they could do that price for a big group booking too...

How they distinguish public & private is extremely dubious. Long Island is no more private than Bonnie Doon.

LarryLong

9 for me, and still nothing outside Victoria (unless you count courses on the Murray) and only 1 inside the top 25.

Thirteenth Beach x2, Tocumwal x2, Eynesbury, Horsham, Yarrawonga, Murray Downs, Eagle Ridge (Over 10 years ago, mind you. Probably doesn't count.)

4 that I played for the first time this year. Should finally make double figures next year with Port Fairy, Cobram/Barooga and Shepparton, and might break the interstate drought if I can seal the Barnbougle deal with Wifey.

Andrew, I am interested in your count....

Sorry Adlo, I wasn't following the thread that closely.

In the Top 50, I haven’t played –
Heritage (St John’s)
Links Lady Bay
Sands Torquay
Eynesbury

The issues I have with these lists:
1. We barely have enough decent courses to make a top 100 of all courses, never mind a list of just public access courses. A Top 50 list should suffice, as many courses in the 2nd fifty are extremely average.
2. I play more Top 100 courses on a bi-annual basis than most people & in fact, most ranking panelists, (this is not a boast, it’s just what I’m into) yet I would not bother traveling to play 2/3’s of that list. It’s not that they are bad courses, but lets face it, if you are in Melbourne for a few days & you have the chance to play Kingston Heath again or Eynesbury just because you haven’t played it, which one are you going to choose? When I was 25 I would have played Eynesbury just to add it to my list. Now I’m 42 & life too short, so I’ll take the Kingston Heath option every time

I know two of the panelists that compiled this list & they have not seen many of these courses for more than a decade. I’m not saying this to have a go at them, but to draw attention to the inaccuracies of these lists.

3. Like I said in a previous post, “What is public & private?” Barwon Heads has the same visitor policy as Newcastle, but one is considered public & the other private. Castle Hill has the same visitor policy as Bonnie Doon, but one is considered public & the other private.

O.K. I’ve had my first rant for 2009. It’s always good the get the first one out of the way early.

adlo

And a fine rant at that Andrew.

Thanks for the answer.

And I understand what you are saying. I think the very fact that 51-100 are just grouped together shows how stupid it is that the list has 100 courses and not 50.

I have also wondered about the public/private thing too. Seems a bit stupid. Some WA courses could fall into that same category.

Any course in Australia, bar maybe a handfull, is public if you are prepared to pay enough $$$ and don't live in the area. Most people just don't bother asking the question.

Capital (Victoria), Ellerston & maybe Frankston (Millionaires club) are the only real Private clubs in Australia by the American standard of private.

Capital and Ellerston where the only 2 I could think of, so I said a handfull in case there were others that I hadn't come across. What is the Frankston one? Do they wear flanny?

nb - nobody could ever confuse Capital in Victoria and Capital in the ACT. Absolute polar opposites.

That's a shame about Laguna, I always loved playing there back in the mid to late 90's. My girlfriend at the time worked there so I got on very cheap and always enjoyed it. The conditioning back then was fantastic.

I have always wondered how courses like that stand up against the "better" ones around the country, perhaps someone like Andrew who obviously has played alot of good courses could comment, if he has played it...

I was just browsing over the list again and noticed this entry:

Top 100 MIRAGE nr

I assume that this is the Mirage Resort in Port Douglas, and have edited my first post to include it. The condition of the course must have improved out of sight for it to make this list. The last time I played there (albeit a few years ago) it was an over-priced POS.
