Okay, being a sucker for punishment I have just bought a family membership to the Reds. All games at Scumcorp stadium are included. Seats are in the family freindly end (milton rd) but we got front row so the kids will enjoy it. Hopefully the Reds will put in a better effort this year.

Nice work Petey.

They look to have assembled a decent squad this year, even with some depth to cover the inevitable injury curse. Combined with a decent draw - their Semi final hopes may not be out the window within the first month of the competition - which is a step in the right direction!

Not many steps they can take in the other direction!! But this season ios looking a lot better than the last couple.

virge666

I reckon they are much better than 12 months ago... the basics are there, I would like some more leadership and a better scrum.

But I am enjoying my rugby at present.

PeteyD
15th March 2009, 09:11 PM
Wins like that have been few and far between. I thought the Sharks played allright, the Reds soaked the pressure really well, particularly the first 20 minutes and the first 25 minutes of the second half.

The kids have been to both Reds home games this year and they have won them both. The kids love the Reds. They were telling some Sharks fans on the bus in how the Reds were going to win. Was very funny.

Oh - Don't forget to mention, 2 rookie props against the Springbok front row, and held their own. Awesome stuff!

henno
15th March 2009, 09:16 PM
Without a doubt the Reds handled the pressure well. Some of the big tackles were outright try-savers.

I still think they are a little messy in the back line, but lucky for us the Sharks were even worse. They could barely hang onto the ball.

PeteyD
15th March 2009, 09:26 PM
Yea but pressure does that to back lines. Even to Springbok Vunderkids. The Reds held onto the ball a lot better than they did against the Cheetahs.

Is this the same team that came within a few dodgy calls of beating the Highlanders at home? Talk about inconsistant.

virge666
19th April 2009, 10:31 AM
What was the go when they were only playing 13 players... STILL couldn't score.

All you had to do was hold the pill and wear the opposition out . . . the tonne of lineout ball they lost or got under a pressure also wasn't much chop.

Aussie Ruggah has to get better than this... The Tah's are embarressing, the Brumbies are struggling, the force can't get on the board and the Reds make too many mistakes.

At least we can smash England. :)

PeteyD
19th April 2009, 10:34 AM
Hang on to the ball seems to be the problem. They did it when they beat the Sharks. Pity it was only for that game though.

They dropped plenty of ball against the Cheetahs (and with the line open) and only won because the cheetahs were woeful.

Braid has a ruptured achilles. So with a run home that is rather daunting I wonder if the reds can scrape a bonus point.

I am sort of lost here... what is with the midfield kicking. i am an ex-colt player and i just don't understand all the midfield kicking on first phase.

There is no setup, not pressure, no targeting, and very rarely some chasers.

I just don't get it, kicking should be the last resort or something to do to keep the defense back a bit... risking a 50-50 ball just to gain 20m is my idea of insane.

PeteyD
19th April 2009, 11:28 AM
Mate I was a forward so don't ask me!

It has to do with the kicking out on the full. You can't take it back into your 25 and then kick it out. Mind you there is no point in trying to build phases when you keep dropping the ball.

virge666

Catch 22.

How can you expect to be able to hold the ball under pressure when you keep kicking it away waiting for someone to do something special.

They are smart guys - but I just don't get it...

Horwill!! 17-0 to the Reds. Blues are emulating their namesakes!!

This is the reason I hate the Tah's. They rarely play more than 20 mins a game - when they do, they are awesome, but most of the time, it is defensive, negative rugby over and over and over.

The Tah's will get smashed when they hit some quality side and go back into their shithole.

Crusaders were ordinary at best. The amount of turnover and handleing errors the Reds should have won by 50. And yes Jarro doesnt look good for their captain which will be a shame. Good player and will be a loss if he has done his ligaments. But then these footballers seem to recover ultra quick nowadays. Hmmm . . . a little one side view there.

May I suggest the 40 minute Wallaby like nap in the middle of the game. You know the bit where the Blues scored two tries, including one that one bloke ran through about 7 players.

I thought that bit was a bit heartbreaking.

Unlike the Tah's getting Tah'ed. . They scored almost 40 points and still didn't win. That was awesome.

Scottt,

At one point last night, Berrick Barnes jinked cross field pefectly, drew two defenders to him and opened up a hole that even Matt Dunning could charge through. He popped a perfect pass and Carter (his 13) was flat footed and looking at him like a deer in headlights. It was comedy gold, and to think they pushed MacKenzie out the door!

If their outside centre has no idea how to hit a gap, they are in trouble. He copped a fair spray from Barnes too! Lucky they have a good pack.

Watch the brumbies or the reds or even the force. All three have a bit of ticker and a decent captain who promotes the flow of the game.

I taped the Tah match last night and it was appalling - Nay - frigging awful. I simply fast forwarded through most of it. I reckon there was more kinking in the second half then all the aussie teams combined for the year. You could even hear the crowd boo at times.

Phil Kearns had the right idea - Next person who kicks I will take off the field, or get a captain that actually promotes the 6 million dollar backline they have. They spend all this money on backs, and then never use them...

Friggin Insane.

If their outside centre has no idea how to hit a gap, they are in trouble. He copped a fair spray from Barnes too! Lucky they have a good pack.

That was an almost perfect play - all he had to do was hold the ball and hit it up. Even with a dodgey back I could have hobbled though that chasm.

Barnes is going to need some time to get his backs hitting up... And Burgess' service is way too slow, hospital pass after hospital pass all night long.

They are just so dissappointing.

No one is going to turn up to watch the game if they continue to play like that. Just like the last world cup.

Yeah, I guess that the Tahs were too busy winning.

Yep - only JUST winning against the LOWEST ranked team in the comp. Good defense, but Barnes just nothing to work with in the backs... they all just stood around waiting for someone else to do something after the second or third phase. They were probably thinking about their paychecks or a move to Melbourne.

Phil Waugh's comment post match that there should have been more kicking in the first half sums up how I and many others feel about them. They have no chance of the Top 4, especially once the NZ teams start to work out the rules and really work their loose forwards.

Been a long time coming for Sharpe to show some mongrel.

I was waiting for him to punch the Ref late in the second half - he lost his rag a few times and gave away a couple of Penalties, but he hit the line hard all night and got his blokes fired up. he has some players due back soon, all the best to him.

This is where you lose me - I am a Rugby man through and through - I dead set love the game. I will watch six nations, sevens, anything.

The HUGE problem I have with the Tah's is that they 2.1 million dollars worth of back line and they INSIST on playing with a bad kicking game and a "winning ugly" formula. The Tah's kicking in general play is ordinary to say the least. Having a Sydney team should be a showcase for the sport in this country, but everyone I know who watches the Tah's play invariably come back with the "Rugby is boring" attitude that stifles it's growth.

I use to see at least 5 home games a year and we would easily get 30,000 people to watch it. Right now they struggle to get 20,000, i think 16,000 people turned up for last couple of home games. The Tah's rely a lot on their gate takings, so the question remains - Why do they play in such an unattractive way? And why would anyone go to the ground to watch that boring shite every couple of weeks? The Force are bottom of the ladder and they got 35,000 to the crusaders game... Whose bottom line would you rather present ?

The obvious last question is how screwed up and factious does your board have to be when Mackenzie can't get 15 prize studs to play decent football but can move up to QLD and get a couple of half good players and a bunch of Neville nobodies to play with passion and skill all the way to the top of the table.

They still have the talent to go deep into the finals but it seems they might be reading too many back pages at the moment ;)

Does this count as an honorable loss?

Enjoy mad Monday next week!

Much more succesful season for the reds than I had hoped for at the start. Youcan hardly call it a choke. The could finish as high as 5th if they win this week. Anything above the bottom three this year is a major acheivement. Bodes well for the coming years and for the Wallabies. Bunch of entertaining young players coming through. The Tahs and the Brumbies better make the finals now.

more a case of injuries than anything. Down to 6th and 7th choice locks, 3rd choice openside flanker and the list goes on

Tahs should have a home semi.

Don;t know about should, but the Sharks rolling the stormers has helped them a lot. Brumbies could to. I jsut hope the Brumbies and Tahs win so NO kiwi teams are in the finals. Classic stuff :D

If the Bulls and Tahs both win then Tahs get second spot.

Stormers home game. Brumbies could leapfrog the Tahs with a BP win (not likely in Christchurch), plenty of permutations. Hurricanes are form side quite capable of beating the boring Tahs. But a win is most likely a home semi.

Interestingly the Bulls semi is going to be played in Soweto, as the Soccer World Cup has taken over Loftus.

Suck shit Brumbies.

Just quietly - how sexy do the Tahs jerseys look tonight?

Hardly boring rugby, the Tahs have just shown their detractors they can play attractive rugby at times. Bloody frustrating that they don't do it more often. Bring on the semis!

Oh, and bad luck Brumbies, better luck next year.

4 weeks ago - I would have said you must have rocks in your head if you think the Tahs would make the semis.. and the Reds would not.

What a big 4 weeks... brumbies have shit, the reds have all got injured and the Tahs have prevailed.

. . . and it hurts to say this, but, the Tahs have played good football the last few weeks.

(i feel unclean for saying that)

Red's leading 24 to 8 in the 46th minute, with bonus points are they a chance of any kind of making the final ?

24 to 20 in the 55th minute, bonus be nothing now!

They almost lost that. Good game to be at, but man what a loose game.

that disallowed try vs the stormers that was a clear try now looks a bit more valuable.

I was saying that last night, but my guests didn't seem to understand the implications despite my attempts to explain it.

Not good enough for what? They more than passed any expectations on them this year. Unlike a certain team that is full of names and has failed to win a title.

Game was great to be at. Good to see 2 teams throwing the ball around and playing well. Great to see the Reds not collapse like they did last week.

Tahs beat the Stormers in SA? No chance.
