View Full Version : ACT Matchplay Challenge

sms316
17th November 2008, 10:59 AM
I haven't even gone close to winning a net golf match so the challenge is laid out to tg01 and wbennent - two of the finest matchplay golfers in history.

Home and away format, so 6 matches in total. Scoring is 20 points for a win, 10 for a squared match, with a point per margin (eg 2&1 is 3 points, 5&3 8 points).

These 2 couldn't beat an egg  - so surely this will be when I break my duck.

The matches, in no particular order;

That's a nicely formatted challenge.

I hope the boys take it up.

Benno is in and I'm sure that tg will oblige.

It could be golf's first nil-all draw though!

I was under the impression that Schanop only plays 9 holes early in the morning, midweek.

It sounds fun but a probably a touch difficult to join the whole lot at this time though.
I don't have any official handicap at Yowani yet, still have to manage to get time to play in a Sunday comp there to get my score card marked. So handicap-wise, it is a little bit unfair even though I know that it's around 7 or 8, but I'd like to be a spectator if you guys don't mind. However, every other weekend when I am in Canberra (every other would be in Sydney), my girl friend (also a golfer, beginner ) friend is visiting from Sydney, so she probably will have to tag along as well.

You are on for this weekend SMS. And 27 points from one of us should be enough to win 3 and 2...

I have spots booked for the following weekend at GL - 12:20 Saturday.

Which track will TG nominate as his home for this event?

tg01
17th November 2008, 07:42 PM
Just catching up with this

I am in on this crazy adventure. How could I not be, given the whole world is watching.

I need to check access rights over the next few weeks for Fed, otherwise I can do GC anytime (before I rid myself of the membership there). My preference is for Fed so hopfully there will be no issues.

Either way you pathetic homos are history, looking forward to taing this much regarded prize of being ACT's best ....?

If so, the WA boys can follow the lead of the ACT boys in a 3 way showdown.

All loses mentioned are appropriately supported with good excuses...

The form has picked a up from when we last played. I am not concerned about wb, he is a an easy beat. If SMS keeps getting shots back he will certainly loom as a contender for the title.

Grunt, you will get yours at the Mt B game, as soon as Andrew organises it (he has some nice prizes to as a result of his NTP at Federal)

From little things big things grow.

Who knows, in 18 months time we could have a dozen competing in the ACT Matchplay titles...

Schnappy - you will need an AGU handicap to play.

Dotttttttie - my form has gone further downhill since our encounter. If these clowns can't beat me, they are the worst players in the world.

Must be due for another trip there then, I reckon there are only 5 or 6 holes a little hilly, the first few on each nine are flat. You tee up high on that par 3 that is 220ish ? The hole before that is on the side of a hill, the hole before that there is a mild incline to the green.

Nah, you're just unfit.

Just a quick update. WB went 4 4 4 4 4 to open a 4 up lead that was never a chance of being caught up...

5 up at the turn, wb makes an up and down for a 4 from centremetres from OOB, then centremetres from lake to go 6 up. And a win on the 12th made it 7 and 6, thanks for coming...

TG did manage to back a great winner on the punt, and we saw Walshy liquored sitting on the okey badokeys. Hope he had another win there after his 47 points last Wednesday!!!!

tg01
29th November 2008, 06:34 PM

GLGC, Australia Day Cup.

You, me, Bluescooter and Robbo, off the 10th at 8:08. Don't bother bringing fireworks to this one...

I'll concede 10 now as I'll hook it straight out of bounds, but I have 13 more shots to play with after that. Bring the a game princess!

WBennett
26th January 2009, 02:13 PM
And SMS's run of rubbish matchplay results continued today after going down 2 and 1 to myself at Gungahlin Lakes.

After SMS was one up after one after WB hooked it OOB as predicted, and the next few holes were swapped and it was all square after 9 with SMS dopping a long bomb for a 3/4 on the 18th.

WB made it one up after par on 1, then SMS went for glory and hooked it into the soup on 2 when trying to clear the 250 carry... After both found the water on 3, WB made a 15 footer for 4/2 to go three up.

It was looking all over with WB having a 15 footer for birdie on 4, but a three stab opened the door. SMS won 6 with a par from out of the muck to get it back to 2 down, and 7 could have gone either way if both players putts had been a foot harder.

Come the par 5 8th and both were a chip away for 2 - WB hits a lob wedge to a foot from an impossible spot, and SMS blades a chip through the green. Match over

Rematch at Yowani in a couple of weeks...

Nice prediction Nostradamus.

Thanks for the hit. The Gung is in pretty good nick, although the greens were a bit shaggy. Thanks to tg01 for the kind text messages of support he sent to me last night (presumably whilst half cut).

3&1 was pretty much on the money. Unfortunately.

WBennett
27th January 2009, 01:06 PM
As discussed during the day, leaving the greens shaggy so something still exists after the predicted week of 35-38 and hot northerly winds was a surprisingly good piece of management by the greens staff.

And it helped you left everything 2 foot short all day.

Bluescooters 40 points saw him come 9th overall, and 6th in C grade. The winner had 47 points!

My 6 and out on the 9th cost me third place in B grade. Bugger...

Congrats to TG for a hard fought victory at Federal 3 and 1 today.

It was a big fightback after I was two up and one under after two, and three up at one stage.

TG fought back as my driver become a hooking beast, and played some very good and consistant golf as well as never looking like missing a putt all day.

For Grunt and Dotttie - on the 7th, I found the fairway bunker, went 9i, pitch, one putt birdie. The 4 putt demons are dead

On a very disappointing note, there was no wedding reception after the round and absolutely nothing to perve at.

Grunt

It was a good day out there yesterday. Benno played very well on the front and was 3 up after 6 holes. Kept me in it with some missed putts early.

I knew however, the choke was coming and by 12 holes I was one up. The driver left him and I started to make some good numbers. A good birder to wb on 7 (out 16th) ensured we went to 17, only for benno to bogey (damn fine bogey it was) and me to par with a well excuted iron onto the green....

What do you mean nothing to perve at, didn't you see the chick on the 12th hole?

Your next SMS - only you stand in the way of me taking the crown.

After rolling in a 20 footer on 1, I didn't make a putt outside 4 foot for the rest of the round.

Finding 9 bunkers didn't make it easy either.

SMS - I tried the trick smack it into the face of the bunker shot. If I wasn't a retard with the flat stick it would have been the best par of my life...

I thought it was impressive that Federal put up a car for a hole in 1 on 12, and NTP got the hand shandy off the old duck! No wonder you love it there ;)

Yep - only a complete 'tard stands in the way. If you don't win this thing you should be shot. You will need to wait at least 2 weeks for the crack at the title though.

Strangely, I won my first pennant match this year comfortably. Thank Christ nobody in ACT pennant posts on Ozgolf or I would be in deep kaka.

Surely you can win one matchplay challenge. Come on, its only TG....

So long as you take both matches to the 16th hole each time, that should be enough for me to hold on to the title. You can do it!

This "only TG" beat your miserable choking arse.

Lots of travel on at the moment on weekends, making my golf schedule rather difficult.

No good for me. Playing pennant semi this week, and after we beat Gold Creek the final will be on the 10th. If we lose, I will be in Albury.

Of course you could play pennant for Gold Creek this Sunday.

Benno thats not too bad an idea, although I am taking tomorrow off to go to Melb for the footy.

Maybe. After playing #1 in every game this year, I think I am playing #4 so I can draw that big turd Harris. Some serious order shuffle going on.

30th April 2009, 11:47 AM
You're just soft cocking it, knowing how good GC #1 is....Harris playing 4 now? That team is pretty good

I'm doing nothing of the sort. I would love to play Mick (nobody is unbeatable).

We don't have the depth that GC do, so we are going to try to nail down 6&7 (with our 3&4), and play our 1&2 mid-order. As much as I hate throwing matches, this order has a lot of merit.

Benno

They cored the greens in mid April and they haven't quite come back due to the cold weather. Maybe worth waiting a couple of weeks but then if its only the costs on comp fees worth a hit anyway.

I'm happy to do a Qld, and give up my home match to play at Goldie. I've probably played it more than Yowani anyway.

I'd like to suggest it wasn't by default. I smacked SMS 2 from 2 home and away, after I rolled TG 7 and 6 at home, then lost the rematch one down or so.

Not quite by default, but they couldn't catch me under SMS ridiculous scoring system.

That system is fine. All it does is reward large margins if 2 people have the same number of victories.

Anyways.... it would be very unlikely that TG would be able to catch Benno. TG's handicap is realistic, which means he wouldn't roll me twice.
