Just chatting with mates today, and not to yank my own chain, but it came up that sport is my forte, i just seem to be able to pick up most sports and play them well.

Golf - i do ok, down to 7 for now.

Squash - a friend and i play about twice a week, beating comp players, great sport! still to play virg666...

Ten pin bowling - 180 average which works out to be a 22-25ish handicap (for those who play league) its been a while since ive played league but a game the other week got me going again

Tennis - happily play a few times a month with a mate from work, c'mon's all round.

Cricket - Indoor at the moment as weekend doesnt work with shiftwork, came 4th in the comp, its very fun for those who dont play

Snooker / Pool - always loved pool and snooker, used to be into it alot more but now just have fuin sharking at the pub with mates.

So what else do you guys play? If i can make it to the champs, it would be good to get away from golf for a night or so and play other sports for those who are keen!

Absolutely zero.

Golf is marginal, as the ball stays still. Lot of surgery on the eye muscles as a lad makes hand-eye co-ordination a problem. (It gets embarrassing when someone throws a ball-marker to me on the green.)

Sailing was okay, but not worth the expense or travel time. Done a bit of long distance cycling over the past decade, but that was mainly for fundraising, not sport.

Tennis - don't mind a hit, and won a few social/Tuesday evening comps about a year ago. Gave it away due to our team being too busy and unsure if we could continue to turn up consistently.

Squash - Really enjoy this game, consider myself more than adequate. Will challenge any comer. Basically not playing more seriously because I'm carrying too much weight on dodgy knees.

Cricket - Gave it away recently because the local comp lost it and my time was better spent playing golf. Took my fair share of wickets, but never batted high enough up the order to make anything of it.

Indoor cricket - Enjoyed a short stint playing in a successful A-Grade team. I didn't rate the game or treat it seriously enough to stay in the team. It's really a crap game when your true love is outdoor.

Cycling - Just put a deposit on a reasonable bike, and will start to rack up the km's. Pick it up next week, and will do the Spring Ride (50 km's - North Sydney to Homebush) in a couple of weeks. It will start out a fitness thing, and may grow into a serious social sport - local cycling groups do anything from 20 km to 80 km rides every weekend.

Pool - Current company pool comp champ (50-odd teams entered) :p More arse than class as with all pool comp winners!

Netball - A very useful Goal Defence ;)

soccer, then tennis as a kid. Played neither at the top level, but was good enough for fixtures and junior development squads etc...

Had a hit of tennis with AndyP a year or two ago and was appalled at how little ability I'd hung on to. I'll stick to golf now, even though I'll prob never get as good at golf as I was at tennis.

Was right into cricket, up until the old man decided to sell my entire cricket bag for grog money!
Can bowl a mean off-spinner, and can hit a good ball when I concentrate.
Will get back into it down the track, but right now I need to focus on golf.

Golf: I've been in A grade for a number of years now, won a pair of Monthly Medals, peaked at 5. All my best stuff was in B Grade though (Pennants/ Club Champs Matchplay etc.).

Basketball: Played for many years, only retired 2 years ago due to a back injury. Got selected for Toowoomba U18s whist at uni, but returned home before the rep season commenced.

Beach Volleyball: Went undefeated for 3 straight seasons in mens pairs comp. Won several local tournaments, but got shown up by the pros when the Tour came to town.

Indoor Volleyball: Played several seasons for Cairns Crocs in the QLD V-League (state-level comp) starting mostly as opposite but also played pass-hitter when our gun player was on National team duties

Indoor cricket: played for many years socially. Recently asked to play in a travelling rep side (I think they were struggling for numbers ). I occasionally have a night out with the bat, but I'm more proficient with my bowling/ fielding.

European Handball: never played, but there is a sign-on on Thursday evening. I'm gunning for the London Olympics.

Can also hold my own at squash/ futsal/ indoor netball

Golf is one of my worst sports.

So, I assume this is where we boast. Of the sports that I was actually good at:
Cricket
· I represented NSW from the age of 13 to Colts & 2nd XI.
· Selected for an Australian XI after the u17 state championships where I was beaten by Ian Healy for the highest aggregate by only 2 runs.
· I was offered a full state contract at the age of 20, but my music career was taking off at that stage as well, so I turned it down.

Ten Pin Bowling
· 200+ league average.
· Made the final stage of the South Pacific Classic 3 times, once at the Nationals & once at the Australian Open.
· High sanctioned game of 279 (5 separate occasions), although I have bowled a 299 in practice. Highest sanctioned 3 game series of 802. Highest sanctioned 4 game series of 980.
· Haven’t bowled a ball in 10 years since I busted my left knee.

Everything else I'm crap at.

Andrew...I always get a mental picture of Colin Cowdrey when you talk about your cricket prowess.

I was actually extremely thin back then, but was never worthy to tie Colin Cowdrey’s shoe laces. Even as a teenager I was a compiler of runs. My greatest talent was not getting out. If I’d kicked on with my cricket career you would all hate me for being the most boring opener of all time.

I've always been competent at whatever sport I've had a crack at.

Golf: Got to a single figure handicap with only beginner training and bugger all practice.

Tennis: I've played it on and off for years with lots of trophies, but nothing too fancy. I'm not playing at the moment, but would love to. I've filled in for teams a few times this year, and have played well each time, despite having stopped playing nearly two years ago. I've generally been the strongest player in my team, so I don't get to play the top grades much.

Touch footy: I play it now, and do nothing special. I have no intuition in the game, have no speed, and can't step. I do my job and leave the fancy stuff for teammates.

Indoor Cricket: Another game with tonnes of trophies. Solid batting, but bowling was my strength. I also was a wicketkeeper for several seasons. Like tennis, I was generally one of the better players in the sides I played in, but never really top grade.

Running: My times for long distance running are relatively good considering the amount of time I've been doing it and no specialised training.

Golf - ok have got down to 6, not there now though.

Aussie Rules - played A grade in the then QAFL. Got to play on Wayne Johnston in later years so that was fun.

Lawn Bowls - won the novice championship in my first 3 months of taking it up and played A grade pennants later same year

Cricket - Played in a few Brisbane reps sides in juniors, a couple with Stuart Law (he was damn good back then, and then got better). Played a couple of seasons in A-grade but then down in the b-grade sides in warehouse cricket here in Brisbane.

Pool - played the Queensland champ and beat him :smt038...he potted the black off the break! I wasn't watching and didn't even get to see my win, first I knew of it he was shaking my hand saying thanks for the game!

played as many sports as i could until the end of school

Tennis - made it to pennants when i was 16
Cross Country - made the school team each yr
Triathlons - Competed in about 10 olympic distance races, couple of second and third places.
Touch footy - just social comps

Thinking back makes me realise how unfit i am now.

Played A grade squash for years until I took up golf about 7 years ago.

I've beaten John White, former world no.1, currently ranked 17. ( when he was 15 ) I've also beaten Steve Finitsis . And Marcus Smith too . They've all got world rankings and I've got a torn anterior cruciate.

Played Basketball and Volleyball until the knees forced me to give it away and took up golf 4 years ago.

Basketball- played state level.
Volleyball- Was the MVP of Australian Junior tournament and All Australian Team at various National tournaments. Member of Aussie Junior team.

Wish I could get my golf to a similar level......

Matt 3 Jab.....Sorry mate...gotta ask......what's your marital status?
If I even thought of playing that many sports in a week, i'd be divorced faster than you can say "Fore" :o

Nah, good on ya if you can crame that much sport into a week....wish I could.

Me?...Bit of a jack of all sports really....I find myself very competitive and put high expectations on myself to perform.

Futsal: Played in the last 4 grand finals prior to retiring (didn't win one of them :smt093)
Outdoor Soccer: Gave this up in 99 after a pretty bad car accident that stuffed my neck & back but got as high as the Reserves in the local WA league. Prior to the A-Legue forming, this was one away from the 1st team which was the highest level to play in, in my time.

Did a lot of cycling in my younger days with anything up to a 60km run being common for most Saturdays...god was I fit then.
Played a lot of basketball and squash but only socially...I always seemed to be the one to try beat.

Golf: Well, its been just under 18 months, lived a block away from my local for 30 years and never once stepped foot onto the course. (one of my great regrets in life) Absolutely love the game with a passion.
No h/c as yet but hitting in the mid 90's most of the time.

Dabbled in heaps of other sports like skateboarding, surfing, long distance running etc... and was always right up there....probably spread myself a bit thin in my younger days.

Played senior soccer as a goal keeper for 15 years bouncing between reserve grade and A grade, was never quite good enough to hold down the A grade spot for any length of time.

Was a better futsal player, the highlight of that was probably making the grand final of our first national titles in Canberra only to lose in a penalty shootout to N.S.W:smt093

Currently playing over 35s basketball and golf

European Handball: never played, but there is a sign-on on Thursday evening. I'm gunning for the London Olympics.

I have bowled a few 200+ games of ten pin.
Another love of mine which can be classed as a sport, is fishing :smt023

Maybe we could head out on the saturday night of the champs ?

Saturday night bowling sux. Soft case balls always get stuck in the ball return because they have been set up for house balls. Then the lane mechanic has to be called & he looks at you like you're some sort of snooty wanker for bringing a 'Rhino' for social bowling.

Of course, I am a snooty wanker, but that's not the point. I can't handle that sort of pain again.

The one game I was good at was Lawn Bowls
Started playing at age of 18 and won a few reginal finals and a few club champs

I used to get bagged all the time about it being an old mans sport back then.

But hey I thought the old fellas had the right idea. A BEER AT THE END OF EACH END :)

You really do sound like you've gotten soft Andrew ..

.. harden the **** up buddy !!!

Not only that! On Saturday nights no one knows the correct etiquette of who should give way to whom. Everybody just bowls willy nilly whether you are halfway through your approach or not.

Then some dickhead behind the counter turns off the lights for ‘moonlight’ bowling, so now you can’t see the dots or arrows or board-joints.

Yeah, I’m pretty soft, aren’t I?

Volleyball - Played A grade hardcourt volley ball for a few years (mixed and mens) also a bit of the beach stuff.

Cricket - Played good standard turf cricket, I even won the Club Champion award in my first year. Eventually had to make the decision of golf and cricket. the little white ball won.

Played just about every other sport.

Pretty handy at most things, but Basketball and Swimming were the main ones.

Basketball - Won a couple of state champs and captained our Uni team to a National Championship back in the day. Also warmed the bench CBA level for a number of years with the mighty Rocky Rockets and later Ipswich Eagles. (Some fine bogan teams there) ;)

Swimming - Represented the state up to the age of 16, than realised watching a black line for 9 kms a day aint that exciting of a "sport".

Fishing is a sport right?

Boat Races - had a brief career during Uni days.

OK Andy..I've moved on from Cowdrey....I have a mental pic of Chris Tavare now...THE slowest opening bat of all time.

I was going to mention him, but I was scared to.

To give you an example, opening the batting in an Australian u19 XI against a touring English u19 XI in a 3 day game at Adelaide Oval, I batted for almost 4 sessions for 132; and that was after I ‘got stuck into them’ on the morning of the second day.

I did hit a 6 onto the old dog track at the Gabba in a state match when I was about 16. Mind you, it was a pretty small ground back in those days.

Could be like a guy who took 2 years to score a century in a Sheffield Shield game (perhaps Warren Ayres??). Started a match on New Year's Eve, was unbeaten overnight, and brought up triple figures on New Year's Day.

Nice to see anther couple of volleyballers of note.
I made the Vic squad as a junior but having to travel from Mildura to Melbourne every weekend meant I couldn't take up the offer. I wish I could have played under the current rules as I would have made a kick-arse libero. I never had the leap to be much good in the front line and was really only the 4th or 5th best setter in the state so I doubt I would have gotten a game anyway.

Competent park cricketer and some association representative squads as a junior but never hit any real heights. Won a few bowling average trophies and club points trophies. The back is gone now so I have had to give it away. I miss it still.

Played just about everything when I was a kid at School.
Rugby league, played for a few Souths Juniors teams until I started work after the HSC. I was just too small and got smashed regularly in my last season, I was a half back/five eight. Played with a few now retired NRL players, most notably Scott Wilson ,the bloke could have been anything, and Colin Ward. Highlights for me were as an avid Souths fan, scoring an runaway try in the Commenwealth Bank Cup on TV at Redfern Oval:lol:

Sailing: With a supportive Dad, who when ever I got into something he got into it too, I was pretty good at Sailing. I started off in Sabots, moved up to Flying 11's did not get very far above club level in that class but won a Club Championship and 3 Season Pointscores in the class in 4 seasons. I moved up to 16' Skiffs and did ok again representing my state a few times at Australian championships. Then with myself starting work and having to do shift work I could not Sail the crewed classes to a level I wanted to be at, nor sail every week letting the others on the crew down. I took a gamble and sailed in a Single handed Hobie cat class. I borrowed a boat for an end of season event on Sydney Harbour. I won the rookie class, I was hooked and went out and bought a Hobie 14 Turbo the next week. The following season I travelled up and down the east coast whenever I could get leave from work to race. I made the Australian titles in Mooloolabah and preceded to come 3rd, could have won it but for one race. The next season I could not get the time off work and I am a none or 100 type of guy and I sold the boat.
I made a brief comeback a few years ago when A friend of a friend asked me to steer his 28' yacht in the NSW Police Games. We won the gold medal:lol:

Apart from Sailing I have also done Triathlons almost 20 years ago, a little bike riding and a couple of goes at Touch footy.
I love team sports but the shift work does not allow me to put in the effort required to give 100% to both my team mates and myself

Sailing was okay, but not worth the expense or travel time. Done a bit of long distance cycling over the past decade, but that was mainly for fundraising, not sport.

What classes did you Sail, Dotty?

I was Cricketer magazines "Young Cricketer of the month in Feb 1986 (i think)". Made 160 not out and took 7 for 23 in an under 17's game over consecutive weekend, and in between made 50 in a representative match. Won $100 from RESI Statewide as a prize, all of which was spent on VB and Melbourne Bitter cans for me and the boys!
Also made a few park cricket 100's over the years, including the famous 191 off 80 balls with 23 sixes.

I also consider myself a talanted pinball and darts player, which together with pool or snooker form the modern triathalon where I grew up.

I am no good at a lot of sports including tennis, football etc, basically anythign that requires running (which sux)

edit....I was mooching around the brisbane airport last week and in the little games room / cafe upstairs they have some of the old sit down Pacman and Space Invaders there....brought a tear to the eye I tell ya.

Golf is one of my worst sports.
I did hit a 6 onto the old dog track at the Gabba in a state match when I was about 16. Mind you, it was a pretty small ground back in those days.

The Gabba just keeps expanding... Reminds me of Bradman telling Dean Jones he used to bash it over the trees inside the dogleg of a hole at Kooyonga when he was young. After Deano tried and failed, clipping the trees and ricocheting out of bounds, Bradman patted him on the back and said "of course when I was your age they were only knee-high!".

Also made a few park cricket 100's over the years, including the famous 191 off 80 balls with 23 sixes.

They tell me that was quite a dig, Slim!

Me? Nothing sparkling.

Was a decent water skier/barefooter until I was 15 or so and fell in love with golf.

Swam at a state level from Year 7-10 until I lost interest and got fat. Swam against Thorpie in a few events and got smoked (not in the way Thorpie now smokes other dudes).

Played second grade in the Sydney Grade Cricket comp, and played in the NSW CHS Indoor Cricket final in Yr 10 against a Yr 12 kid named Michael Clarke (who smashed us with bat then bowled remarkably quick off three steps).

Now I sail a fair bit with my old man. Some decent results in racing, but I more prefer the long stuff. We have done Darwin-Gove and Hamilton Island-Hervey Bay two-handed together.

One day the soccer ended and the league was about to start but our mob was short on numbers. They talked me into it and told me to hang around on the wing where I wouldn't get hurt. Believe it or not I was a scrawny 60kg skinny arse at school.

It was boring as batshit for 10 mins until one of the Cav Rd props decided to have a run out wide....out wide and clean over the top of me...I was gorneski.

I have an almost identical experience with my one & only game of Rugby Union (also on the wing due to a shortage of players).

I'm pretty much awesome at everything.

Weirdly, and probably surprisingly - my best sport is/was actually Hockey. It's big in country Victoria where I grew up, especially in Albury/Wodonga and Deniliquin.

I made the Vic state U/13 side when I was 11 and captained it the two following years. I then moved to QLD and made the QLD Open Schoolboys side when I was 14 (Grade 9) and again the following 2 years. Played quite a bit with and against Jamie Dwyer. I was also Vice-Captain of the Australian Schoolboys side in 1997 (year 11).

I then gave Hockey away in Grade 12 to focus on Rugby and haven't played since.

Other sports I was ok at are Rugby Union and Cricket. Made QLD Schoolboys Rugby side in 1998 (Year 12) and Cricket side in 1997 (Year 11) - I had a back injury in Year 12 and ended up playing the 2nd half of the season in the School 2nd XI.

Played First Grade in both Rugby and Cricket for University of QLD. Cricket in 1999 and 2000. Rugby I played Colts before making 1st Grade in 2001 until 2003. I also played Rugby for Manawatu in the NZ NPC competition, played 3 QLD A games and had a contract with Munster in Ireland for the Heineken Cup squad, but never got a game. I also played both Cricket and Rugby for Oxford University in England.

I played 1st V Basketball at school, but completely sucked and really hate BBall at that level, as all I ever seemed to do was run around setting screens for the good players.

I was an 'ok' runner, making the 4 x 400m relay team at school (51.9) but was well behind the best guys. Can also play tennis because my Dad is a gun (Davis Cup Junior) so I had to learn to try to keep up, but I'm not what you would class as 'good'.

I suck at swimming, darts, pool, snow skiing and Ten Pin Bowling.

I now play 3rds QAFL and its m favourite sport, wish I had never moved from Vic and had kept playing it from a young age - but thems the breaks.

Other sports I like, but don't think I'm very good at are Beach Volleyball and touch.

I'm also an excellent shot with a 12 guage or a .22 :)

Ordinary golfer - never got below 10.0. Still aim to get there one day if I ever a) have a lesson b) learn to get off the tee

Former NSW Hillclimb (motor racing) class champion in a mighty Datsun 1200 - never got a crack at the Nationals as we never had enough money to travel anywhere other than NSW. Still hold records at a few tracks, although many I used to run at have closed these days. Got to test drive a friends Formula Holden at Wakefield Park but the gearbox broke on the second lap (he warned me it was on its way out) and that was that... I realised I did not have the required $ to keep going so I went and watched my mate play footy that afternoon....

...and over a beer that night was convinced to play the next season. Since played 142* games of footy for my amateur aussie rules club - not bad seeing as I had never played before I turned 22 and am now club record holder, 3 time Premiership player, once as Captain. Over the years I have broken both ankles and both arms, wrecked my knee and pretty stuffed everything else in the eleven years since I started but my goal is to bring up the 150 next year and hang up the boots...

I'm generally average at sport, but never set the world on fire. Good enough to have fun though.

Cricket - generally 3rd XI and 4th XI in Ballarat. A couple of 150s as an opening bat/1st drop, a few 5 wicket hauls as a straight leg spinner. Reasonably crap fielder. Still remember my first game in under 14s. Was so short that I was clean bowled ducking under a beamer! Only ever hit one 6 (top edge over backward point) and that was because the boundary was only about 40m away and there was a screaming tail wind in that direction.

Ten pin bowling - normally can break the ton, never broken 200.

Hockey - played as one of the major draw backs. Kidding - normally left half or left wing in 2nds. Not skilful, tried to play my opponent closely enough that they'd not hit the ball to them.

Volleyball - if only the net wasn't so high! Used to be able to block on a good day.

Tennis - sometimes the ball goes back over the net, sometimes it doesn't.

Swimming - swims more like an anchor than the anchor.

Does Donkey Kong count?

I must say I am excellent at cleavage football...A sport I picked up in my uni days many years ago.

This game requires a beer bottle top (squeezed into a football shape) some half cut female friends with B cups or above and a table....I am sure you can work out the rest.

I must say I am excellent at cleveage football...A sport I picked up in my uni days many years ago.

I’ve heard that the Cleavage Torpedo game is a lot of fun as well. Usually best played in private & you have to bring your own torpedo.

What classes did you Sail, Dotty?
Division 1 Onshore at RPAYC. (Most boats were ex-offshore 35-45 footers, that owners did one Sydney-to-Hobart, and only one.) Usually 1-2 mile triangles north of Barrenjoey lighthouse, and handicapped by percentages, so not really racing side-by-side. Like golf, handicap adjusted each week for finishing 1, 2 or 3.)

Only did it because I caught up with an old school friend during the 21st brithday stage and used it to keep in contact. Ending up winning the Spring, Summer and Overall.

Tried to get involved with Hobie 16s at Batemans Bay, but the golf bug bit at the same time.

I would have smashed you moe if it wasn't for my dodgy body. I was on track to play overseas for an EPL club ....except..
First knee operation at 19 ..2nd knee Op at 22, and 3 back ops at 35, 37 and 39.
I coulda been a contender.pfft.

Collar-bone shattered at 15, knee reco at 16, stress fractures in back at 15 and again at 16 and cracked vertabrae at 17 :)

Another knee reco at 22 and a shoulder recon at 19 just for good measure.

Dunno Moe, No rep teams since you left school.Munster and Manawatu are rep teams, but you make a good point.

This thread has shown me how lucky I've been wrt injuries.

Although mine have tended to be career ending. The back ended cricket and my chronic tendonitis killed my umpiring.

Neither of those involved contact though, Bruce.

Besides a broken collarbone (Aussie Rules), which hasn't healed properly, I've only ever had minor niggles.

I tore my quad off the bone playing union at 17 and didn't think anything of it, and the muscle reattached about 3" further down my leg, so now I have this wierd pocket at the top of my thigh where there is no muscle.

It only really flares up when I kick a ball a lot.

Other than that, I have - touch wood - not had any major injuries.

In 30 years of sport, apart from cuts and bruises the worst injury i have had is a dislocated third finger on my left hand.

very strange as thats not even the half of it.

I've had broken ribs, nose and eye socket all just this calendar year from the 3rds footy!

6 broken arms (5 of them before the age of 10, so not sport related)

every finger except the ring finger on my left hand. My pinky on my right hand is completely mangled from so many breaks.

Also broken my left leg and my jaw !

Strange thing is that I've only ever had one actual soft tissue injury and that was a torn quad in grade 12. I just break stuff

This is like lethal weapon and showing off our scars.

I got carried off the field twice - playing Indoor cricket!

Once my batting partner clocked one and got me just under the eye. Knocked me for six, went down like a bag of nuts, realised i was gunna get run out, so up i jumped completed the single (as if they were gunna run me out anyway) and is soon as I made the ground, practically passed out again. Blood everywhere.

Second time, the keeper went to throw down the non-strikers end, as I dummied and then turned back into the batting crease. So he got me in the eye with a full blooded throw from about 2 feet away. Hit the glasses lens, busted that, frame digs into eybrow and cuts it, big black eye and Blood everywhere again.

both games I still fielded and pulled off classic catches both times. Otherwise I normally made Phil Tufnell look good.

Thommo, it needs to be said. Harden the **** up!!

What's the deal with the constant bone injuries? It doesn't sound normal to me. Even this year's batch of injuries. Although you did play ruck, while I played back pocket in a dominant side.

Moe Norman
14th October 2008, 09:43 PM
this year I had my head over the footy and got smashed for the eye socket and nose break.

The ribs were from a hit at the bottom of a pack and then exasperated in a ruck contest.

After I broke my arm so many times as a kid, my worried parents went and had my bone density etc checked and it all came up fine.

I'm just injury prone.
