And the Reserve Bank has dropped interest rates by a whole percentage point

Thank god they did because the market was in a huge nosedive :(
The last time they dropped rates a whole percentage point was back in 1992.

John Symond from Aussie Home loans just said he anticipates to see about .7 - .75 of a % taken off the current rate.

Fingers crossed

westpac dropped their's .8%

7th October 2008, 05:22 PM
That's something at least. We're with Westpac.

I need to buy a new home more often! Last time we bought was way back in like the end of '96 and the day we settled was the first day of an interest rate drop. I think they were at about 8.75% and it was the start of a heap of drops. Getting the money at the moment to build now - so these drops are noice - but it always seems to happen when we buy something big!

Anyone else thinking that central banks around the world will coordinate a significant rate cut? Perhaps the AUD will survive after all!

henno
7th October 2008, 07:27 PM
Nope. The other major economies already have their rates in the toilet. The Aussie dollar is doomed. It was great while it lasted.

OMG
8th October 2008, 12:11 AM
You could be right henno, but we still have one of the hghest interest rates around and our economy looks about as safe as there is too, so don't be surprised if investors want to move some of their money here which would keep demand up, so maybe!

.70 was the bottom on Monday :-)

its cracked .645 a short time ago.

Pretty good trick by the USA Nice Government Men. tease the punters with the promise of throwing 700b out of a helicopter which will debase the dollar, the result is that the market drops commodities like a hot potato and begin hoarding dollars. :smt102

I wonder how long it takes for them to realise that the miserable dollar is worth less than the paper its printed on and they start spending it again. (oh wait, only 5% of USD is backed by paper, the rest is backed by thin air)

Paypal have to do some skimming on the exchange rate.

3oneday
24th November 2008, 08:53 AM
Oh yeah, you don't use the Paypal rate, you have the option of charging it direct to your card as they skim more than the banks do.

About 2 cents I think, if not more.

It's a tough question isn't it. Will we go much higher like 6 months back? If so any purchase now would be comparitively smashed but it is still a lot better than the $0.60 of a few months back.

I'm at least back looking at ebay.com which was on the non-go list for a while there.

when would a Koala ever encounter a Narwhal?

henno
1st June 2009, 05:40 PM
It's embarassing to admit, but I have seen all of the above merch before.

Although I did wonder what the designers were smoking that thought an Arctic Narwhal would meet (and impale) a Southern Hemisphere dwelling Koala. :smt102

Maybe the koala went for a swim and met Harold Holt and then an encounter with a narwhal ensued?

What goes up must come down. and usually it falls as quick as it went up.
This is the USD Index, which is the $ versus several of the major currencies (doesnt inc. AUD)

Grant, The USD is karking itself against all currencies, means nothing regarding the AUD. I dont know how our dollar is going against the othe majors, havent looked.

I don't know much about drawing lines through the peaks and troughs like the traders do, but from what I can see it looks to me like its the USD is about to stop hemorrhaging for now.

Seems a ways off the 47 cents some doomsayers were predicting.

henno
1st June 2009, 07:34 PM
I know it sounds backwards, but I hope the dollar doesn't creep too much higher. $0.75-$0.80 is a good mark in my books. Any higher and I'll just about lose my job, exports suffer, and we are not as well sheilded from international economic issues.

The low Aussie dollar might have cost us a fortune in golf gear at $0.50-$0.60, but it played its part in saving us from the bulk of the Asian financial crisis.

markTHEblake
1st June 2009, 07:48 PM
I know it sounds backwards,

well how is this for backwards., in the last month or so, Gold has been increasing significantly measured in USD, so everyone is saying to buy it as it heads towards the magic $1000

But in AUD its been going down. :)

so does one buy or sell now? :?

henno
1st June 2009, 07:50 PM
I think that depends on how poorly you think the US economy will do, more than the performance of the Aussie markets. (Just like the AUD-vs-USD I guess.)

Scottt
1st June 2009, 07:53 PM
The AU$ is also kicking the pound's arse right now, so it's also a good time to buy from the UK.

AU$1 is buying about 52p at the moment. When I lobbed here last November it was buying 40p!

I thionk shipping from UK to Aus is a bit pricier than US to Aus though...
