View Full Version : Qld: Xmas BBQ and Brooky Bash, Sun 14th Dec 7:00am

BrisVegas
26th September 2008, 10:42 AM
This has worked pretty well in the past, so I'm happy to host a game at Brookwater again and a BBQ lunch afterwards on my back deck.

How does an early game Sunday 14th December sound?

Cost is $75 for golf in GPS carts, including range balls etc...

Partners and Kids are welcome to the BBQ. There's plenty of room for em to run around, swings, trampoline etc.. (no pool yet though...)

EDIT: 3 groups booked from 7:00am.

Rusty
8th December 2008, 11:42 AM
we'll have the beer on ice in esky/s so don't mind if it stays in the car. might depend on what time we drive through.

BV (or Mrs BV) what's the convenient time slot to drop stuff off before the game (Bazzy likes to have a bit of a swing before a game whenever he can, though at that hour in the morning i might just try to deter him :D )?

+ so, can we leave it open whether we drop stuff off or not, depending on how we're going for time?

tour velvet cord ? I'm not too fussed, it's mainly that the grip on the thing atm is too small, so i just need something bigger. No biggie, haysey's got a stash of grips sitting in his office, I just thought someone locally might have a spare.

Ok, I'm up for a good old fashion punt? Anyone up for a game of dots to make life interesting on Sunday? I haven't played since the champs, so have been saving my pennies!

No way I'm playing dots, not since I had to pay Dion $50 at Gailes....

Thanks anyway, poidda, but the family is going to the BBQ, so I'm right for the return trip. There's only a few times when the one car thing doesn't work, and it's usually because of golf...

At this stage, I'll take up Iain on his kind offer...again.

sausages - Vegas
esky ice - Poidda (The eski may or may not have a case of beer in it)
bread rolls - Holdens
potato chips - PeteyD
soft drinks - Eag's
potato salad - GCswinger
coleslaw - Iain
beer - Rusty & Baz (half carton of Blue Tongue, half carton of Miller's Chill & half carton of Cascade light)
pavlova - Mrs BrisVegas
I'll think of something - just

With poidda's withdrawal, Rusty/Baz supplied beer will go warm without the poidda supplied ice (which will arrive later). Potential disaster!!!!!

Also, is there any meat besides sausages? I ask because we'd get mostly sliced bread, instead of rolls for the snags.

Had a fun day out with the Ozgolf clan, my golf was rough but expected it a bit with a few swing changes. It did blow hard but it kept it cooler which was nice. Brooky was in good nick and the greens were mint.
Thanks to Dion & Sandra for organising the day and for the top BBQ & Pav :)

Beers were cold! Woohoo!

Thanks for the day all. Our BBQ hosts, in particular.

What did people think of Brooky today? It's a great course, but I can't help thinking that at the moment, it's not stamping itself as elite, especially in terms of condition. Nothing that is bad, but I guess it's just the little things. We are lucky are enough to get guest's rates (thanks Dion), but I hope they aren't charging full rate to people as it is.

I don't know if anyone collated scores, so I'll chuck our groups down and we'll go from there.

nuttedit 31pts ? (very solid player - do you ever have a shocker?)
AndyP 26pts (you suck!)
PeteyD 21pts ? (a bit unlucky, but that's Brookwater)
just 15pts (par 3 master)

14th December 2008, 06:14 PM
You were sloppy seconds on the E7+ ;) Tough course always tears me one. Gotta hit em straight.

I agree that the condition was a bit off. Plenty of very wet patches, and some tees undergoing renos, and the bunkers that were washed out were ugly (and the one by the 18th sucks !! ) but that is what happens with rain I guess.
Greens were great

A flood went through Brooky during those wild storms we had a few weeks back, Dion was pointing out a few spots where the water must of been hammering through  All things considered I thought it was fine.

Thanks everyone for coming out for a hit. Sandra and I really enjoy having you all at our place for a bbq and catchup. Thanks also to everyone who chipped in with food, drinks and ice etc. Next year we'll do steaks and burgers, sorry it was just snags this year.

Considering the amount of water that's been through here in the past month, I thought the course was in reasonable nic, especially the greens. There are obviously a few holes where the bunkers havent been repaired (GUR) and where there's still casual water. I don't know what they can do about that stuff considering the clay and topology. Before the flooding the course was very good overall.

The tees have been damaged now for 2 months, I dont know what the hell they did to them to kill em off like that.

Thanks for the scores Rusty.

Slow play has been done to death on the forum, but that doesn't mean it wont get talked about when it happens. I think we were all surprised how far back the 2nd group got, especially as we were having search parties on every other hole and 3 of us playing very poorly. The first group out had players that had more experience around Brookwater and, as always, it was the first group's job to keep the pace moving.

That being said, it's not my job to bring it up as a topic of conversation at my BBQ though. I actually forgot about it once I got cracking on the snags.

IMO the BBQ is definitely not the place to have a chat about the slow play. How bored would the other halves be?

Call me impatient, but slow play ruins the enjoyment of the game for me single handed. And 95% of the time it isn't the standard of golf that causes it, but more the ****ing about before and after shots.

It was commented on Dions balcony that once the group had teed off, it took another 5 minutes before they drove past in the carts? I for one can't understand what could be going on after you tee off? Marking cards, having dinks, chats, high fives????

Hit the ball, move on, hit it again. It doesn't take that long.

Oh..I thought you guys were in the third group.Nope. Justin took a wrong turn getting to the golf course on the new turnaround, so we swapped order to give him a chance of making it. He caught up with us midway through the second hole. He sent his apologies to those at the BBQ.

Obviously the groups are done wrong. Instead of hand picking the superior paced players for the front group, one of you should go in each of our groups to show us slowbies where we are slowing down......

No worries mate..I taught Alo a few of the finer points of ettiquitte in the Sunday round of the champs...now were bestest buddies.

I think this site is well more useful than learning how not to be slow.
http://golf.about.com/od/golfetiquette/ht/paceofplay.htm

A sentence in the first paragraph sums it up for me.
"Remember: pace of play isn't about rushing your shots, it's about being ready to take your shot when it's your turn, and behaving efficiently on the course."

Interesting that at the champs and at brookwater the only people mentioning slow play were those in front. What is your issue if someone else wants to take a bit of time and it doesn't have any affect on you? You weren't even playing Poidda!

Thing that annoys me most on a golf course is people whining and moaning. And it is usually about slow play when nothing can be done about it (2/3 groups lined up on a par 3 etc).

Rusty's group were pretty slow up front, but with 3 guys who never played the course before and searching for balls pretty regularly that can be expected.

I didn't appreciate the crazy koreans hitting up on us though. That is pretty rude, particularly when you can see the group in front of us are still in the way.

Don't know why I've been singled out, but I don't care as I've stated that slow play is my pet hate. And I'm not always the first group (or in this case I do actually play) so slow play affects me 9 times out of 10. Five hour rounds, especially when playing stab is simply unacceptable. Sheesh even Tim Wounded and his "Wounded Seagull" address can get around in less than 5 hours. ;)

Something can be done about it. Hurry the **** up! It takes just one group to ruin a day for EVERYONE on the golf course.

Not much we could do. I guess Rusty's group could have let us through. You can only go as fast as the guys in front.

The 2/3 groups thing is more about Saturday club rounds. I think that everyone cops it then. I know for medal rounds, or if you are at the back of the field for any rounds at Reddy you have to be prepared for 5 hours. You just have to not let it get to you, or play in one of the early groups.

I think Pete's frustration with being hit up on, is that the group ahead of us was clearly in sight and therefore nothing we could do, and no need to hit up on us. Besides, it is never okay to hit up on others, slow play or not.

I don't like slow play either and I picked up on holes I could have finished because I couldn't be bothered and because it wasn't worth it, to keep the pace of play going. And I wasn't particularly offended by the pace of play of the blokes in front, because it was a tough day.
Brookwater is particularly bad, because if you don't hit straight you don't have a hope of finding your ball quickly, if at all. There were even places where we saw the ball land in light rough, just off the fairway or near the green, and still either had to spend minutes looking for it or couldn't find it all. While I think think its a nice course, I think it is overly penal, especially in the wind that picked towards the latter stages of the game.

Thats a pretty lopsided mix of indexes. I think Dion said he gets 6 and 2.

Yeah and it makes my 11 point front nine look even worse!

The indices were done based on actual scores from monthly medals through 2007. They're being re-done again at the moment and will all change for 2009. Some of them seem pretty out of whack, eg. the 190m par 3 7th which is index 12? I don't get a shot on ANY of the par 3's as it stands right now.
