View Full Version : The OZGOLF music playlist swapping thing...

OK, I flew this idea and had a bit of interest last week.

I will make and burn an 80 minute CD/playlist of whatever music I choose, and send it to fellow ozgolfers. On the proviso they do the same. All in all, an attempt to find some new tunes.

Depending on numbers, I am thinking if we have 10 or so takers, we can all exchange details and send one copy to all ten ozgolfers. In effect, burn and post 9 CDs, and receive 9 CDs back in the post.

If there are any better ideas out there, please throw them into the mix before this thing gets to far along.

OK, so post you name if you are interested. Once we get a better idea of numbers, details can be exchanged.

Just a suggestion, but should we consider doing this in mp3 format? That way we're talking 200 songs instead of 20.

200 is silly - stick with 20.

I agree with Bruce. With 20 songs, we should be getting some good stuff. With 200, there will be a lot of filler, kind of like a Dream Theater album, right Jarro?

Don't let G69 near this. All you'll get from him are Show tunes!!

Bruce

So are we gunna rule a line under this list now and send out the tunes?

adlo
18th September 2008, 08:35 PM
I think so Bruce, was hoping for a few more, but current numbers will make it easy at least.

I thought Jarro might have shown previous interest?

If not, we can exchange details via PM. I'll send something through tonight/tomorrow.

Hope not. Scottttttttttttttttttttt should know, apparently he has done something similar.
Scottt?

AndyP

Oh, I was thinking in the few dollars range.

If that's the case, I'm happy to try some different music (even if it doesn't last on the playlist long), and embarrass myself with my own music at the same time.

One person sends their disc to the person directly below them on the list ... and so it goes until we've all heard all the discs.

My playlist:

I've had it as a playlist on my iPod for a few test listens and I am happy with my final list. I ended up going with a rock flavour, because I felt that might have been more popular with the audience, and I tried to avoid tunes that were extremely popular (except for a few I couldn't resist). The playlist could just as easily have had 17 hip-hop tracks on it.

1 Signe - Eric Clapton (Unplugged) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYNbn1rHGwE)
2 Good Fortune - PJ Harvey (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPswnZolFGE)
3 So Says I - The Shins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-P15e6NvtU)
4 This Year - Mountain Goats (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYCzDhaRV60)
5 Somebody I Used to Know - Elliot Smith (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIvBwGsxgBE)
6 Hibernate - Big Heavy Stuff
7 Jealousy - Sparkadia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUif1Xzaze4)
8 Hamburgers - The Whitlams * (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3KK8onFXOg&feature=related)
9 Dirty Heart - Dallas Crane (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Di714ziaoQ)
10 Soldiers - You Am I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uygubfWKVx0)
11 3 MCs & 1 DJ - The Beastie Boys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PT8YUB1Ym0A)
12 LDN - Lily Allen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xB67guV1dGg)
13 Foundations - Kate Nash (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orACIBjHuI4)
14 Sunday Smilin' ** - Finley Quaye (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Ezz-q9Gsk)
15 Fools Gold - The Stone Roses (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuPfbfJm2rc)
16 Revelate - The Frames *** (live version) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_I_6GJzcDsA&feature=related)
17 Decent Days and Nights - The Futureheads (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfJMqUN0FCE)
18 Anyone Can Play Guitar - Radiohead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BWHnNhGTKg)
19 Canada - Lazy Susan
20 Whatever Happened to Corey Haim? - The Thrills (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1E_l82UqcLQ)

* I originaly had You Sound Like Louis Burdett, but I couldn't find a good enough clip of it on YouTube once this became my method of delivering. The album version of this is better (also on Triple J Hottest 100 # 4, disc 2).

** The disc I have this on definitely lists it as Sunday Smilin', but the YT clip calls it Sun is Shining. Whatever.

*** Their live album, Setlist, is f**king sensational. You must buy it immediately. Trust me.

I couldn't find YT versions of Hibernate or Canada, but there was no way I was replacing them.

Apologies again for the pissweak method of delivery.

It is Sunday Smiling, but I think it samples Marleys Sun is Shining and people just seemed to call it that.

Our playlists are like chalk and cheese, but this is the one song that almost crept onto my list.

Listening through the list doing some work tonight. Enjoying it. Your tastes are more indie than mine. And you obviously have a "thing" for british chicks. Or maybe it was having Lily Allen and Kate Nash back to back.

Scottt
29th October 2008, 06:40 AM
Well yeah, now that you mention it, the only three albums I own with chick singers are Lily Allen, Kate Nash and PJ Harvey...

There are other chick songs I have on compilations and stuff that I like, but they're the only ones whose albums I own. Who thought I'd learn something about myself doing this.

Here's my tracklist (with clips where possible) for anyone who's interested.

Intro: I've tried to stick with mostly Aussie artists as I reckon we have fantasticly talented and diverse homegrown artists, many of which don't get the exposure they deserve on the international airwaves.
__________

Custom Kings - Up Late (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUo0Zkm8i4c): I came across these guys when they were the support act on one of The Cat Empire's australian tours. A seemingly undiscovered band with eclectic style.

Lovers Electric - Honey (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5DV4BJDdx8): I don't know much about Lovers Electric other than they are Australian and are a husband & wife duo. Nice track to introduce themselves, though.

Sneaky Sound System - Where Do I Begin: I gotta admit, I'm a sucker for a catchy pop act, and SSS have proven themselves to be a fine example of said style. So much so, in my opinion, that I was just as excited to see these guys (as support act) as I was to see Robbie Williams last year. This track is a more mellow, mature offering from their latest album.

Cut Copy - Future (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdJWsh2zPuI): Another little known act (from Melbourne) who have been classified as Indie with a hint of Electro.

The Cat Empire - The Crowd: I love these guys. They are the best live act ever, bar none.

The Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4i_c7VU-IgE): This could almost be described as a cult hit, as it seemed to be huge in some circles, but never made a dint in the charts. The Gossip are a punk act from San Francisco or somewhere nearby.

Cut Copy - Hearts On Fire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4SponDQDWw): Cut Copy remind me of Depeche Mode et al from the 80's, but with a slightly more recent model synth.

Grinspoon - Don't Change (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwIzt_h00Bg): A cover of the INXS track from a great Aussie rock band. I'm a fan of one band interpreting other bands music.

Queen/ AC/DC/ Outkast/ Led Zeppelin/ Prince/ The Beatles/ Snoop Dogg/ Crowded House - Rock In Black (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LrL5zSlW_s): Mashup artists get a bad wrap for simply recycling other peoples music and being unoriginal, but I beg to differ. I will agree that there are a lot of poor examples to wade through, but every once in a while you come across a gem like this one. It takes more than a computer and a few mp3's to make a good mashup. I have discovered a few mashup artists who are accomplished musicians in their own right. This guy (aka Go Home Productions) is one of the finest.

Muse - Knights Of Cydonia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YygyHCRrKho): this could almost be classified as an instrumental, but is an awesome song to play loud when no one else is home.

Thirsty Merc - The Vision: This is a sleeper, but one of the highlights from their Slideshows album.

The Cat Empire - Down At The 303 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqONT9gzbLc): Hard to explain what I like about this song, but I dig it.

Hook N Sling - The Best Thing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sf6GpLlJJnA): A remake of one of my favourite Boom Crash Opera tracks which is apparently tearing up the dance-floors across the country. Most of those kids wouldn't know the original.

Xavier Rudd - Let Me Be (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZS4K28T-eSY&feature=related): This guy is our very own Jack Johnson, but even more musically talented. I have seen a clip of this song performed live where he plays every instrument in one-man-band style (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R7HDvMlBps&feature=related). Quite amazing.

Willie Nelson/ U2/ M.A.R.R.S.: Another mashup from the other top exponent of the genre, Divide & Kreate. A lot of thought has obviously gone into matching these songs together.

Cut Copy - Out There On The Ice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sI3tstEeY7g): A more uptempo track from Cut Copy, albeit still with a retro feel.

Fair enough. Might have to check them out live. The only song I have ever heard was their first single, "Hello, Hello" or whatever it was, and hated it.

JC, we didn't get your address, but they all got sent to adlo anyway. He'll have to pass them on to you.

--------

As for my own playlist, I started trying to pick some more obscure stuff that peeps may not have heard of before, but in the end I decided that that wasn't reflecting me. My final playlist is a collection of songs/artists that I would listen to on a regular basis, so I guess you could say it's a bit of a CD made for myself. This means a fair bit of Pop, but I'm not ashamed of it.

I'll list my songs after adlo and JC get the CDs.

Jarro, every passing day I gain a little more respect for you.

If you want some good 80's Canadian rock, check out Honeymoon Suite, "Burning in Love" is their best offering!

Triumph had some great tracks, "Spellbound" still rocks!

I am still having a hard time comprehending that I can turn on the classic rock station in this country and hear Loverboy's "Turn Me Loose".

Andy P, remembered that you were sending them to Adlo shortly after I posted. Stupid beers with the father in-law after work!

This disc is really tough for me as I listen to everything from the 60's to recent, and like every genre with the exception of country. I don't want to put too many older tracks on it, but I have been in a 90's alternative mode the last little while. I might have a few good songs that never made it to Aus to put on.

I'll throw a few Canadian tracks on. Looking through Youtube has brought about a few "classics".

Well done Courty.

I didn't want to go back through the archives... where to stop?

And Andy, kept a similar philosophy, things I would be happy to listen to. I figure that works. We'll see..... Although it wont work with Jarro, that I know.

Jarro, every passing day I gain a little more respect for you.

If you want some good 80's Canadian rock, check out Honeymoon Suite, "Burning in Love" is their best offering!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_1AhimnRT0

Triumph had some great tracks, "Spellbound" still rocks!

I am still having a hard time comprehending that I can turn on the classic rock station in this country and hear Loverboy's "Turn Me Loose".

Jarro might also like Helix - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bN14WuW22p8&feature=related

Johnny, have you heard of the Canadian band "Black Mountain"? If you have, are they any good?

Intro
My playlist is a collection of songs/artists that I would listen to on a regular basis, so I guess you could say it's a bit of a CD made for myself. This means a fair bit of Pop, but I'm not ashamed of it. I didn't necessarily pick my favourite songs by each respective artist, but strong songs that may not have been hits.
One recurring theme of this list that I've noticed looking back, is blokes with falsetto voices. I don't know what that means......

1. She Kissed Me (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=z2xgvE2UL-Q) - Terence Trent D'Arby - Symphony Or Damn (1993)
Starts fast and keeps travelling at that pace. TTD is a talented artist, that appears to have gone a bit weird (like so many do).
2. High And Dry - Jacksoul - My Soul (2006)
I heard one of their songs using Pandora, and liked their sound and chased down an album. My Soul is a bunch of covers, and I had a trouble picking which was the best to put on the CD. Covers of Ashes to Ashes (Bowie) and 1979 (Smashing Pumpkins) were in and out of the playlist before settling on this one.
3. Buckingham Green (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=n-oYMsoCc1g) - Ween - The Mollusk (1997)
These guys produce a lot of kooky songs that make you wonder what drugs they're on (it's weed BTW), but they also have some high quality songs. This album had a nautical theme, and this particular song has some great guitar.
4. Black Sweat - Prince - 3121 (2006)
My favourite artist. I probably should have put two of his songs on, an old and a new. This track is a funky number from a more recent album.
5. Me, Myself And (I) (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=bBnihNlc-vI) - Darren Hayes - This Delicate Thing We've Made (2007)
A creative album that I wanted to grab something off. I really like the album.
6. Sunday Morning (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=EUqTH9e9sQU) - No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom (1995)
A band that seemed to change their sound successfully as time went by. This is from their breakthrough album.
7. Alright (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=rND8EqzxcA4) - Jamiroquai - Travelling Without Moving (1996)
Another artist where I had tonnes of songs to choose from. I regret not seeing them live when they last visited.
8. Play The Game (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=zaX0ffRRsFI)- Queen - Greatest Hits I (Song - 1980)
I love the start to the song, and Queen taking us on another journey in a song. More guitar.
9. Kiwi (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=IVXIg9osyEI) - Maroon 5 - It Won't Be Soon Before Long (2007)
I saw them this year and wasn't sure if they could pull off their songs live. They succeeded.
10. Hey Ya! (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=xrr81SRhp_s) - Outkast - Speakerboxxx / The Love Below (2003)
So damn catchy!
11. Believe (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=HGVqrPoRU6w) - Lenny Kravitz - Greatest Hits (Song - 1993)
Should be well known, but I love giving this one a good cranking.
12. Love My Way (Live) - Live - Secret Samadhi (Bonus Disc) (1997)
A good cover.
13. Superstition (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=_vDRbPci5K4) - Stevie Wonder - The Very Best Of Stevie Wonder (Song - 1972)
Time to put on your dancing shoes. A classic (older than me actually).
14. Your Disco Needs You (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=d4lPA5G0DOo) - Kylie Minogue - Light Years (2000)
I had to squeeze Kyles on here. Possibly the gayest song of them all.
15. Thin Disguise (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=keClqEfYcAo) - Sneaky Sound System - Sneaky Sound System (2006)
Courty introduced me to them, and I haven't looked back. I attended their gig a couple of months ago and they were fantastic. I chose this song from the first album because it uses the male vocals (Daimon), which is lacking in the second album, instead of the female vocals (Connie) where all the hits seem to come from.
16. Close But No Cigar (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=ymzIkSpBxEI) - Weird Al Yankovic - Straight Outta Lynwood (2006)
Although the songs not hilarious, it's amusing. The main reason it was included is that I like it's sound (like Cake).
17. The Look (MTV Unplugged Version) (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=L-7kTUTjv4Y) - Roxette - Roxette: Rarities (Song - 1989)
Sing along. You know you want to.

Hopefully I'm not the only one that gets some enjoyment listening to these songs, even if it's only Bruce playing air guitar to a couple of tracks.

I downloaded, sorry, obtained a few tracks I needed for it last night. I should hopefully get it finished this weekend or early next week at the latest.

I'll be buying some blanks tomorrow.

Next Sat. will be fine. I'll get us a good 4some with no Tiger.

Johnny Canuck

He can be ok, but I am over it at the moment. I'll set up a good 4ball.

The following weekend I am playing with one of the older guys, very nice man. You should join us too. Bring all 12 hybrids!

adlo
14th November 2008, 12:33 AM
No worries Johnny. I was pretty tired of him after 9 holes and he wasn't even talkiing to me...

The following week should be fine too. Unless I make the final of the year-long matchplay event at my social club (which is unlikely). Will have to spend the next little bit severing the ties. I'll know by the 22nd what is happening for the 29th anyway.

And yes, I will bring my 2 (count 2, two, t-w-o) hybrids. And I will use them, alot.

If you are in doubt, http://www.ozgolf.net/forums/showthread.php?t=10983

Johnny Canuck
14th November 2008, 12:43 AM
Hah!

I know what you mean about being able to hit a lot of shots with them. I went through a phase where I was using my hybrid for all shots that i would normally even hit my 4 and 5 irons for.

adlo
14th November 2008, 01:06 AM
That is my current phase, unless I am flushing the long irons (which hasn't been the norm lately).

I did also ask you a music question.... funny that... in the music thread. Black Mountain?? Had a bit of a listen, wondering if you rate them? A little bit too much of the "psychedelic" vibe for me I think, but they seem to get pretty well reviewed.

Johnny Canuck

Here's my tracklist (with clips where possible) for anyone who's interested.

Intro: I've tried to stick with mostly Aussie artists as I reckon we have fantasticly talented and diverse homegrown artists, many of which don't get the exposure they deserve on the international airwaves.
__________
You've certainly introduced me to a few artists who I would not have heard otherwise on both this CD and previously. Thanks.

Custom Kings - Up Late (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUo0Zkm8i4c): I came across these guys when they were the support act on one of The Cat Empire's australian tours. A seemingly undiscovered band with eclectic style.I'm not completely sold on this one. It's not too bad though.

Lovers Electric - Honey (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5DV4BJDdx8): I don't know much about Lovers Electric other than they are Australian and are a husband & wife duo. Nice track to introduce themselves, though.I really like this track, and would like to hear some more of them too.
For those that like it, visit www.loverselectric.com (http://www.loverselectric.com) for some more samples.

As I've already said, I'm a big fan. I loved the gig I went to this year too. Not the song I would have chosen from the new album though. I think I would have chosen Lost in the Future.

Cut Copy - Future (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdJWsh2zPuI): Another little known act (from Melbourne) who have been classified as Indie with a hint of Electro. I certainly like some of their songs. Others I've been a bit meh.

The Cat Empire - The Crowd: I love these guys. They are the best live act ever, bar none. One of the better ones of theirs that I have heard, but I prefer the live version. I don't like all of their stuff though.

The Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4i_c7VU-IgE): This could almost be described as a cult hit, as it seemed to be huge in some circles, but never made a dint in the charts. The Gossip are a punk act from San Francisco or somewhere nearby.Good song, although I'm not sure I'd chase up anymore of their punk. I had heard it before, but I'm not sure where mostly.

Cut Copy - Hearts On Fire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4SponDQDWw): Cut Copy remind me of Depeche Mode et al from the 80's, but with a slightly more recent model synth. Not a Depeche Mode fan, but I see what you mean. Sometimes the vocals have put me off a bit though. They might just require a few listens.

Grinspoon - Don't Change (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwIzt_h00Bg): A cover of the INXS track from a great Aussie rock band. I'm a fan of one band interpreting other bands music. Some people are too precious about music being covered. If a band does a good job of interpreting it and it's not a straight re-hash, then they should get plenty of credit.

This guy (aka Go Home Productions) is one of the finest.I'm still not big into mashups, but there are some good ones I've got off you.

Muse - Knights Of Cydonia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YygyHCRrKho): this could almost be classified as an instrumental, but is an awesome song to play loud when no one else is home.Great track. I've even got the two boys banging their heads and playing air guitar in the back of the car for this one. What's the rest of Muse's stuff like?

Thirsty Merc - The Vision: This is a sleeper, but one of the highlights from their Slideshows album. Their albums are a bit better than I thought they would be.

The Cat Empire - Down At The 303 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqONT9gzbLc): Hard to explain what I like about this song, but I dig it.It doesn't do too much for me. I don't like that guys voice very much anyway.

Hook N Sling - The Best Thing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sf6GpLlJJnA): A remake of one of my favourite Boom Crash Opera tracks which is apparently tearing up the dance-floors across the country. Most of those kids wouldn't know the original. :roll:I liked it.

Quite amazing.I don't think I'd want to get the rest of his music, but I found this tune pretty catchy, and found myself singing it once quite a while after I'd heard it.

Willie Nelson/ U2/ M.A.R.R.S.: Another mashup from the other top exponent of the genre, Divide & Kreate. A lot of thought has obviously gone into matching these songs together. I like it, but I bet my U2 fan mate would hate it. They are sacred.

Cut Copy - Out There On The Ice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sI3tstEeY7g): A more uptempo track from Cut Copy, albeit still with a retro feel.I might hunt down some more Cut Copy songs (and relisten to the ones I got rid of )

Thanks for the effort you put in to your playlist and writeup, Courty. As I mentioned in chat, our tastes have quite a bit of crossover.

I chucked this on in the car after dropping Courty off at the airport. And I thought it really rocked for what I got to listen to on the drive home, and seemed great to listen to from the get go. However, after picking it up again I started to get a bit worn out by all the rock. I also find after many listens, there are songs that I'll tend to skip, but only a few. Still there's plenty of good stuff on here that I have been introduced to. Thanks Bruce.

The best tracks for me, that I hadn't heard before, are 1, 2, 5 & 16. I almost had 'The Distance' on the CD I made up.

2nd December 2008, 11:16 PM
AndyP I know what you mean. I tend to listen to music in the car in short bursts whilst I drive between jobs. For this, I found Bruce's CD really good. But on longer trips I found it a bit too rock oriented. Nothing wrong with that though, I just like a change of tempo.

Bruce, I REALLY like the Brendan Benson stuff, and have looked into his CDs and also The Racontuers (which I had heard about but was unaware who was in it apart from the dude from the White Stripes.)

Another highlight was The New Pornographers. A band I had heard of but never listened to their music. Really like it, and will also check out more of their stuff.

Track 1 was also a standout. Track 6 was different, but also really cool. Cake was also a good inclusion.

For a mix that I had heard of very few tracks from, I thought this was a great mix. Thanks Bruce.

Johnny Canuck swears he is burning his CDs. His playlist has evolved into a double CD, which will hopefully reveal the most briliiantly thought out CDs of all time.

I know bugger all of the artists he is talking about, but it sounds like he has worked and re-worked this thing. No pressure Johnny Canuck

adlo

JC, I had a late one too, so please.... no pressure.
I have a double disc done, so I will just stick with that. Tally should be 4 discs, but make 5.

Scottt, would be happy to send you a copy of all of the CDs if you want, surely it wouldn't be that costly to send to the UK?

Scottt
10th January 2009, 10:42 AM
Let me know how much it is and I'll transfer you some cash. I've still got money in my Aussie account, so it'll be easy as.

Am enjoying listening to The Honorary Title and La Rocca from your disc.

PM me when they're all done and I'll give you my address.

No worries Scottt, will do.

What's with the Martin Freeman avatar? Is everyone in the UK still in love with The Office?

Nah, just me...

Actually, I have been viewing the forums at work, so I turned avs and sigs off a few weeks back and had completely forgotten I had that as my av.

He is a brilliant actor though.

adlo
11th January 2009, 03:24 AM
Good actor, no doubt. And The Office.... dear me, greatest comedy of all time. I have never watched a show with such perfectly constructed scenes full of amazing and cringing dialogue, and well acted too. Gold.

OK, Qld boys, Johnny Canuck has burnt his CDs, and went back to a one CD format.

I have stuck with a double disc, 38 songs of passion.

We will get them in the post this week.

We both have our discs burnt, and Johnny Canuck has now grabbed some parcels from work to post in, but we haven't seen each other in 2 weeks. Will see each other tomorrow and will get it sussed.

Sorry guys.

Well Johnny Canuck, can we put these guys out of their misery and confirm the CDs are en-route?

Johnny Canuck
6th February 2009, 01:43 AM
Discs are in the envelopes, sealed, ready to go. They're in Expresspost envelopes, so they'll need to be dropped at the post office. I will try and get my wife to do it for me tomorrow as I'll be working from home. I'll drop a line when they are officially in the mail.

PM me your address Scott. When I get your other discs done, I'll send them.

adlo
6th February 2009, 09:46 PM
Johnny, burn me a hip hop disc too. Don't know your tracklist but I am assuming which tracks are Atmosphere on your OZGOLF playlist, and they are sweet. Also keen to hear some Roots and Beastie Boys (you swore you knew their good stuff).

adlo
10th February 2009, 04:33 PM
AndyP, have you ever listened to Maxwell? I think you would like him based on your disc. Not as poppy as some of your tracks, but I am pretty convinced you would like him.

If you are unfamiliar, start with "Urban Hang Suite".

AndyP
10th February 2009, 06:11 PM
I can't say that I have heard of him/them, but I'll give it a go. Thanks.

adlo
10th February 2009, 06:22 PM
Maxwell is a him, has more of an R&B/soul angle, but fits your bill. All 3 albums are very good, but Urban Hang Suite is a good starting point.
I would also recommend Brand new heavies.
And maybe D'Angelo "Brown Sugar". Again a bit more R&B, but you do like a quality falcetto :)

AndyP

The three WA discs have finally arrived. Ryan Adams is the best, Jerry, the best. ;)

Johnny Canuck
12th February 2009, 11:26 PM
I'm in the process of putting my second disc together already. It should be ready by next winter.

In all seriousness, I'll send it through as soon as it's done.

Johnny Canuck
12th February 2009, 11:27 PM
Scottt, I'll be working on yours this weekend. Do you need individual Cds, or am I better making folders on an MP3 disc?

Good to hear AndyP. I was not sure whether my alter ego was ever going to send those discs.

AndyP
12th February 2009, 11:38 PM
I thought you guys were only a few hours behind, not a few months. I'll give those discs a good listen over the next few weeks. There is definitely plenty of music that I've never heard before.

Johnny Canuck
12th February 2009, 11:46 PM
They would have arrived a couple of weeks earlier if Aldo and I had crossed paths sooner.

adlo
13th February 2009, 12:03 AM
AndyP, my first disc was finished moons ago. I sent it to Scotttt before he left for the UK?!?

It did change a little bit over the last few months, through boredom.

Bruce
13th February 2009, 09:20 AM
I got mine yesterday.

I think I only recognise about 15% of the tracks so I look forward to giving them a bit of a bash.

adlo
13th February 2009, 11:12 AM
Glad to hear they are arriving safe and unmelted.
Dunno if Courty has his?

I will post some thoughts on the discs from Bruce/Courty and AndyP soon.

Johnny Canuck
13th February 2009, 11:23 AM
Me too.

I wouldn't really let myself listen to the discs until mine were sent - I purposely didn't ask Aldo for them, felt it was a little unfair.

A few tracks have stood out so far, I like the first Cut Copy song on Courty's disc, as well as the Juniper Lane song on Bruce's.

Will give them some heavy rotation next week for a full review.

Johnny Canuck’s OzGolf Disc

Life, love, stress and setbacks
1. LOTION – The Greenskeepers – A pretty obscure band, but I love the "Silence of the Lambs" theme to the song. The band name also related to golf so I had to include it
2. SHELTER – Bedouin Soundclash - No matter ehow many times I try to describe their music, I can't put these guys into a genre. A cool small town Canadian band.
3. SISTER – The Nixons – A classic 90’s track that never would have made it across the oceans.
4. NAÏVE – The Kooks – One of my favourite “new” bands. I caught them live about a month ago and wasn’t disappointed.
5.YESTERDAY – Atmosphere - There probably aren't a lot of hip hop fans here, but Atmosphere is much different to any other hip hop band you'll find. A white kid from Minnesota that raps about everyday life, not guns, drugs and cars. Very good lyrics. This song is a dedication, with a little twist at the end. I finlly caught them live a month ago and they finsihed their set with this.
6. THE SEED 2.0 – The Roots ft. Cody Chessnutt - The Roots were voted one of the top live acts of all time. I' was going to see for myself in Feb but the f*ckers cancelled.
7. BADFISH/BOSS DJ – Jack Johnson - I am a big Sublime fan and a big JJ fan (I like his early stuff much better). JJ performing Sublime? A must for my disc.
8. MUSIC MY ROCK – Bedouin Soundclash - If you want good background music with people over, their discs are what the doctor ordered. Most women like it to, sogood much to play when the other half is around. Much better than listening to her (or Andy P’s) JT.
9. THREE PISTOLS – The Tragically Hip - The Canadian version of Powderfinger. Awesome live shows. The lead singer is known for launching into full on stories in the middle of songs , that are actually quite good.
10. BAD APPLE – David Wilcox - Canadian guitar legend. Jarro would definitely like his stuff. His "Over 60 minutes with David Wilcox disc" is worth a download.
11. DON’T WALK AWAY EILEEN – Sam Roberts - Another Canadian contribution. Kind of an up and comer on the Canadian rock scene.
12. RIVER BELOW – Billy Talent - I used to work with the guitarist back in a warehouse in Canada. I was super surprised to see how big they have got. "New rock" feel, which I am not a huge fan of, but I really dig this song.
13. ALWAYS WHERE I NEED TO BE – The Kooks - There is a great acoustic version of this on the net that almost made the cut in place of this version.
14. MY MY – 7 Mary 3 - Another 90's track that I love that probably never made it over here. Their debut album was awesome, sold well and then they kind of disappeared.
15. INFECTED – Bad Religion - Punk rock legends. This is my favorite song of theirs.
16. SYMBOLISTIC WHITE WALLS – Matthew Good Band - MGB has become one of the bigger Canadian acts. This is off his first album, a good track.
17. ENEMY – Days of the New - I was never a big fan of this song when it came out, but for some reason I have really started to like it recently. There are so many different levels to this song, I love the melodic part around the 2:30 mark and the acoustic ending is beautiful.
18. PAINTING – Atmosphere - Another Atmosphere track. I am a big fan of imagery in music and this song fills my head with pictures.
19. BEAUTIFUL DISASTER – 311 - I go through phases with the band. This is one of my favourite tracks, a little older, but still good.
20. POOL SHARK – Sublime - A short but sweet song about his heroin addiction. "One day I'm gonna lose the war". Unfortunately, Bradley was right.
21. NUTSHELL – Alice in Chains - One of my favourite and virtually unknown AIC songs. I'll be catching them live (minus Layne) in March.
22. THE HOCKEY GAME – Stompin’ Tom Connors - Canada's version of Rolf Harris, minus the stupid board. What better to sing about than our national game?

Disc 1:

I thought it best to stick with tunes I have been listening to lately (past year or so). So here goes, I hope you enjoy it:

1. See the World: THE KOOKS- I was really impressed with The Kooks debut CD. Short, catchy tunes.
2. A-Punk: Vampire Weekend- A recent find, an interesting sound and CD.
3. Magick: Ryan Adams- A rockier Ryan Adams track from his very recent album, Cardinology.
4. Don’t Forget Sister: LOW VS. DIAMOND- Know nothing about these guys, just heard them recently and thought it sounded good. There is a Geoff Buckley-esque sound to the lead singer, which I like.
5. When the World Ends: DAVE MATTHEWS BAND- Very hard to pick out 1 DMB track, so tried to choose something that flowed with the rest of the play list.
6. Bless My Soul: POWDERFINGER- I am a massive Powderfinger fan. Good Aussie rock is hard to beat. Even though this song featured on their Best Of, I never had it until recently. Great track.
7. Eyes While Open: LA ROCCA- I would have to say this band out of Ireland is the best band nobody has ever heard of. Great song writing. They have some great rock tunes as well as some phenomenal ballads. This is from their first CD, “The Truth”.
8. The Sloganeer: Paradise: ME’SHELL NDEGEOCELLO- Me’shell is an amazing artist. Regarded as one of the best bass players alive today, she has released such diverse music. From Hip-Hop albums (Cookie, Plantation Lullabies), to soul albums (Bitter), dub/funk (Comfort Woman) and even Modern Jazz (The Spirit Music Jamia). Rolling Stone called Cookie “the album that Price has been trying to make for the past decade”. This track is off her most recent CD. She is a bit of a tripper, the lyrics in this track talk about religious fundamentalism. Mmmmm, heavy.
9. One I Love: COLDPLAY- A quality B side from a band I rate very highly.
10. Lit Up: THE NATIONAL- Another recent find. They are generally pretty mellow, but grabbed one of their more upbeat tracks.
11. This City’s Summer: THE HONORARY TITLE- Another artist I know nothing about. Stumbled on their CD recently and liked a few of the tracks.
12. Leaving So Soon: KEANE- Keane’s second CD is by far their best. I could have chosen many tracks. I hope this one works.
13. Keep the Car Running: ARCADE FIRE- This CD was raved about by critics. I wasn’t overly impressed, but enjoyed a few tracks, like this one.
14. King in The Making: AQUARIUM RESCUE UNIT- ARU are essentially a “jam” band. Top shelf muso’s. However, some of their sub 8 minute tracks are good listening. Also, gives me bragging rights for the only play list with a flute solo J
15. Good Love is on the Way: JOHN MAYER- Another top quality singer/songwriter and an excellent guitarist. This song is a live show staple. It was recorded for CONTINUUM, but Mayer admitted it didn’t fit the flow of the CD and had to cut it. I respect that, as it would have been one of the better songs on the CD. However, it emerged as a B side on a Limited Edition EP.
16. You’re The World To Me: DAVID GRAY- A hugely underrated artist and excellent live performer. This track was a recent single from his Greatest Hits CD, which I bought for the 2 new tracks. I hate how they suck me in.
17. Extraordinary: DAVE MANN COLLECTIVE- A Fremantle native, Dave Mann is another quality singer/songwriter in the local Blues’n’Roots scene. I am always disappointed that his studio recordings cannot match his live shows, but all the more credit for sounding great live.
18. Everybody Knows: RYAN ADAMS- A bit too country for most, but I think this guy is a great songwriter, and I really dig this track.
19. Half Speed: LA ROCCA- A track from their very recent sophomore album “OK, Okay”. A mellow CD, but still top quality stuff
20. Fast as You Can: FIONA APPLE- Another underrated artist. Many of the fans of her debut CD did not like her second album “When the Pawn….” However, I love an artist who can change their sound and pull it off. “When the Pawn….” got under my skin and for months I listened to it almost exclusively. This track was one of the singles from that CD.

Disc 2

Apart from a few tracks, this CD is made with very recent additions to my music library.
1. Consoler of the Lonely: THE RACONTUERS- Jack White & Brendan Benson (I know who this guy is now thanks Bruce) make an interesting duo, and some pretty interesting tracks too.
2. Sequestered In Memphis: THE HOLD STEADY- Good rock music with some witty lyrics. A good CD.
3. Albert Goes West: NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS- Have never listened to much Nick Cave until this CD was forced upon me by a mate. Takes a while to grow on you, but it is an excellent album and well worth the praise it has received.
4. People Lead: BEN HARPER- Have revisited some old Ben Harper of late. His first 3 albums are amongst my all time favourites.
5. I’m Diggin’ You (Like an Old Soul Record): ME’SHELL NDEGEOCELLO- I have said enough about Me’Shell. This track is from her first CD, Plantation Lullabies. Hearing something like this in the mid-90’s blew my mind.
6. Wandering Eye: FAT FREDDY’S DROP- These guys are huge in NZ. Very cruisey. Saw them live on New Years Day and had a great time. A 9 piece band with vocals, drums, 2 guitars, 3 horns and 2 on turntables/effects. Nice mix.
7. Better Than This: KEANE- This is from Keane’s newest CD. They have obviously been listening to a lot of 80’s pop, and this track is laden with Bowies “Ashes to Ashes”, but it is pretty easy, upbeat listening.
8. Golden Age: TV ON THE RADIO- This track is like the offspring of 80’s Bowie and 90’s Prince.
9. Greyhound Bus Station: PLUSH- A small scale production, this CD was found trawling the web. It is excellent.
10. Grounds For Divorce: ELBOW- Another recent find. Again, mainly mellow stuff on this CD, but this is an upbeat number. (Recently heard on Top Gear)
11. Strange Times: THE BLACK KEYS- I like these guys in small doses.
12. Energy Spirit: LIAM FINN- Son of Neil Finn, Liam Finn is a great artist/songwriter in his own right.
13. Your Protector: FLEET FOXES- One of the great finds of 2008 for me, this is a brilliant album. Not a sound for everyone, and pretty mellow, but real top quality stuff.
14. Memories and Dust: JOSH PYKE- Another dose of folky singer/songwriter stuff.
15. Sing Song Sung: LA ROCCA- Taken from their first CD. Can’t say enough about how good these guys are.
16. Down To The Market: THE KOOKS- Love these guys.
17. Tear Drop: NEWTON FAULKNER- Pretty average album, but I found this cover version interesting. I love this Massive Attack track.
18. Skinny Love: BON IVER- Another mellow folk track. Hmmm, a trend emerges. Recorded over a 4 month period, isolated in a remote cabin it is a raw, but quality CD.
19. Century Eyes: SHEARWATER- I heard a lot of good things about this CD and I have only just started listening to it. Thought I would throw on a sample.

AndyP, as you are so eager......
Already a big Jamiroquai/Stevie Wonder/Live/Prince/Queen/Kravitz fan, so half the album is a no brainer.

Good choice of Jamiroquai/Stevie songs.

Weird choice of Live song, but decent. I'm a bit over "Believe" by Kravitz these days. The Prince song was OK, but his new stuff just can't live up to his prime (which for me is Come/Love Symbol/NPG albums). Also not sold on the Queen track, but respect for a interesting choice.

Hey Ya is a great song, no surprises there.
Sunday Morning is also the only No Doubt song I ever liked, but it is a great song to turn up loud.

The Jacksoul song was a standout and I would be keen to hear that full album.

Weird Al Yankovic definitely sounded like Cake. Pretty good song, and lyrics are classic. Never really listened to his stuff though. Might be worth a listen.

TT Darby, Ween, Maroon 5 and Sneaky Sound System are all OK, but nothing too exciting for me.

Tracks that I didn't enjoy: 5 & 14. Too poppy.

AndyP, I think our tastes overlap a bit, but your tastes venture more into the world of pop that mine.

Overall, a CD I could listen to, but nothing I can really sink my teeth into.

Your mate, Aldo.

Will post review on yours and Bruce's this afternoon.

Johnny Canuck's OZgolf Disc

A couple of cool tracks on this one, most notably 'Naive' by The Kooks, 'Yesterday' by Atmosphere & 'Music My Rock' by Bedouin Soundclash, but otherwise the rest kind of blended in together. I think I simply crave a bit more variety in sound than what this selection offers. That's not to say that any of these songs are bad, I think they're all a bit too similar in their makeup for me to get much enjoyment out of.

I think to truly appreciate them more, I need to listen to them some more to give them more time to sink in.

I will try to have another listen and give a review.

Better review Courty/Bruce first though.

Adlo's Disc 1

The opening track by The Kooks didn't inspire me much, but the Vampire Weekend track got me rockin' (is that what you call 'Ska'? )
Then came my much anticipated first listen to a Ryan Adams track ever. I have one word... Meh. Maybe I believed the hype and expected too much.
I'll agree with the Powderfinger comments, and I agree that 'Bless My Soul' is one of their 'Best Of'.
Coldplay are an interesting animal. I like their sound in general, but they have tried to use the same formula with too much of their recent stuff. It's as though they've tried to make every track sound like an epic. Some hit, but some miss. This one was a miss, IMO.
The Keane track is one I already have. I've got 2 of their albums 'Under The Iron Sea', and 'Hopes And Fears'. It's not a track I remember listening too before, but I certainly liked it this time around and will probably put some more Keane stuff into my playlists.
The ARU song was pretty good, but the flute solo sounded like the soundtrack from a chick flick. :p

Any that I didn't mention can all be put in the category of 'not much to write home about'.

OK, regardless of my thoughts on this disc one thing is for certain, Courty makes a mean playlist. Well put together and a good mix of tunes.

I think we listen to very different music, but I enjoyed most of the music on this CD.

As said previously I am not a Cat Empire fan. I didn't enjoy the first track that much, but Down at the 303 was much better. Funky and enjoyable.

The major highlights were the Thirsty Merc and Cut Copy tracks.
The Grinspoon track was a good inclusion too.

I enjoyed all the other songs except Muse, it seems I just can't get into these guys. Lord knows, I have tried.

The mash ups were interesting, and good. I doubt I would listen to them all the time though.

This music would be more of the music I would listen to if I was having a gathering or a party. Upbeat pop music, without being too poppy (except the Xavier Rudd track- much more folk than pop).

Adlo's Disc 2

I've never like Nick Cave, so I skipped that one completely (no offense ;))
I was expecting something a bit more from Ben Harper, not one of his best offerings, IMO.
Fat Freddy's Drop produce a sound that I'm found of. I love a band with a large ensemble that means they can vary their sound. I'll definitely be tracking down some more of their stuff.
This Keane track didn't do it for me as much as their earlier stuff. It just sounds kind of messy to me, if you get what I mean.
I've seen/ heard the TV On The Radio track on Rage before. I just don't get it.
I'd been introduced to Elbow's music before by a friend, but it doesn't do much for me.
This title track from Josh Pyke's album (which I already had) is strangely appealing. The way it is crafted kind of reminds me of some b-side tracks by Travis.
I haven't really got into Newton Faulkner much, but I too love the original of this song. I really like this version. It's a little bit different without destroying the original feel.

Definitely some keepers on this CD, and I'd probably say I enjoyed Disc 2 more than Disc 1.

Not really, a bit of everything. Seems to have been filed under Indie Pop by critics.

Ryan Adams better stuff is his alt-country gear, but is a bit much for a playlist like this.

AndyP, as you are so eager......I like this whole concept and will be keen to do it again this year. Maybe a trade at the Champs.......

Weird choice of Live song, but decent.I was probably aiming for something that most hadn't heard before from Live.

The Prince song was OK, but his new stuff just can't live up to his prime (which for me is Come/Love Symbol/NPG albums).Interesting 'prime'. I got into his music during the Diamonds & Pearls/Love Symbol/Gold Experience era, and they would be my favourite albums, but I tried to provide a better track from his more recent albums.

Also not sold on the Queen track, but respect for a interesting choice.I think this is an influence from my father, as he'd give a Queen album with this song a bit of a belting.

The Jacksoul song was a standout and I would be keen to hear that full album.I heard a song via Pandora, and was glad I followed it up. It might be hard to track down. Let me know if you can't get it, and we'll see what we can do.
There's some good covers in there, as I had a lot of trouble deciding which one to put on the CD, but I'm yet to hear a Jacksoul original.

Weird Al Yankovic definitely sounded like Cake. Pretty good song, and lyrics are classic. Never really listened to his stuff though. Might be worth a listen.Don't expect that from the full album. I've found that his stuff definitely ages, as he parodies the music at the time. However, his latest, Straight Outta Lynwood, is definitely worth a listen.

Tracks that I didn't enjoy: 5 & 14. Too poppy.Yeah, I might have gone over the top with those tracks, especially Kylie.

Overall, a CD I could listen to, but nothing I can really sink my teeth into.At least you are interested in following a couple of things up, which is what I have done from the albums I've received.

A good idea to do it again AndyP, I will be keen, and will send my own CDs this year :P

I was not calling the NPG/Love symbol era Prince's prime, but rather my view of Prince's prime. I tuned out after Emancipation and have only listened to odd tracks since then. I did 3121 a spin, and it was OK. I think he was ahead of his time, and fell behind (ala Michael Jackson).

Cheers for your notes above.
Will let you know about Jacksoul.
