The world might end in the next 24 hours or so as they finally fire up the Large Hadron Collider.

I don't think they'll be making black holes on the first day - but you never know.

Edit - they are firing it up around 5PM EST. So I guess I will have to finish that report due at COB today.

Can you give me a simple English version on what this thing do?

Even if they do make a black hole, it wil only be the size of a few electrons. Something tells me that will be just a tiny bit less powerful than, say, those black holes formed when a giant star collapses.

Regardless, even Stephen Hawking himself doesn't believe they will be able to create the Higgs boson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higgs_boson) (a.k.a. "God particle"). He has said, however, that this is a good thing, as the fact that the forces have not created the Higgs boson means that we would need to rethink much of our general theories regarding matter and how particles are formed.

On the hunt for the Higgs Bosson (a.k.a. Stephen Hawking might lose a $100 bet) (http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_7598000/7598686.stm)

Alo - they are going to smash some particles together at a very large percentage of the speed of light. They will then measure what happens and, hopefully, come up with some new ideas on how everything fits together, or confirm some theories of how it all fits together.

It is one of the most amazing pieces of engineering ever made and I'm quite excited by the prospect.

(And I don't think the world will end today.)

Dr Karl said all will be fine .... the theory that this will create a black hole that will swallow the universe was bunked in 1915 or something

God created everything. We don't need to know anything else.

In that case, I wouldn't mind knowing how he did it.

Yep - and took him a lot less time than this thing did to make...

Wonder how much it cost to build the universe . . . I bet he used foreign labour.

So it is all good so far. Nothing differing from the norm here.

We had our ladies comp yesterday and we all joked that it could be our last game of golf so we better make the most of it. One lady had +8 and another +6. I think they thought it may happen.
