Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy a set of irons for under $500. I am willing to buy separate woods, however if they come with the set then that is OK.

I play off an 18 handicap and have a bag of mixed irons and drivers, hence why I am looking for some new clubs.

I'm currently looking at the following clubs, but if you have any recommendations I would like to hear them:

Max Power II http://www.maxfli.com.au/ProductDetail.asp?PID=21&SCID=70

Acer XDS II Wide Sole Irons http://www.valuegolfclubs.com/Iron%20Sets/Acer_XDS_II_Wide_Sole_Irons_3-PW_-_Compare_to_Callaway_Big_Bertha-813.htm

Also, is it worth while investing some more money into better shafts?

Thanks,
Adam

Look at Rock Bottom Golf.

I picked up some R7 Draw Irons for less than $400.

be careful - those clubs you are looking at are probably using commercial grade shafts ( think thats the right term). These are the cast offs that are bundled up and sold with the cheapest sets, you will likely have little consistency with these.

If you are sincerely looking for a good set of clubs, find yourself a decent clubmaker/fitter close to you. Without a doubt he can make you a set of clubs to your specs for much less than the $500 budget. No matter where you are, someone here will know one to recommend - so where are you?

You should not ever buy clubs online unless you really know exactly what suits you and understand the quality you are getting.

goodo, i suggest you look at www.golfcomponents.com.au and ask for Ben. He has a good reputation amongst the aussie golfforums. He is the kinda bloke that will work within your budget and make sure that the clubs work for you. ie make changes later if needed.

What you see on his stock list is limited, he does a lot more gear than that. (in other words its a crappy website, dont let it fool ya)

If you know your fit pretty well some fantastic deals on Callaway and TM irons can be picked up, for starters.

Nice set these. Bought a set for my old man and he loves them:D. Aldila NV shaft in the hybrids and True Temper steel in the irons.

Thanks for your advice.

I've decided to get them custom made as markTheBlake suggested. This way I can test run a few different irons rather than buying blindly. The last thing I want is a set that or irons that I don't particularly like.
