I need some advice - i know nothing about club specs, but am looking at fine tuning my wedge specs. I am in the process of buying a 52* and 58* wedge. I'm looking to possibly, bend these to 51* and 59* and get something in the middle.

Am I better off getting a 56* or 54* and bending it to 55*. I know that this all seems a little weird, but my PW has 46* loft and i feel that the 3 new wedges will be a good balance.

Any suggestions on bounce for the 54 or 56. I am a S%#T from 50m in and need all the help i can get. Any advice would be much appreciated

Do you generally hit it thin, fat, or a bit of both?

Don't get anything with grooves.

if you got a 46 deg Wedge wouldnt it make more sense to buy a 50 + 54 +58 ?

Or get your irons fixed so that the lofts are closer to what is sensible, ie start from a 48 degree wedge and work back in 4 deg increments.

As MTB said, go with 50,54,58 or 52,56,60. If your WITB is correct, you don't have a 3-iron so you have room for 3 more wedges, which is a good set-up (especially seeing your 4-iron is p[robably 3-iron loft anyway).

IMO the 50/52 should have 8 deg bounce, the 54/56 either 12 or 14 deg, and the 58/60 is really a personal preference and depends on your swing and the conditions you play in.

I prefer my lob wedge to have low bounce (6* or less with a versatile grind), but I pick the ball pretty clean and play in firm conditions.

Some need more bounce. If you take deep divots, and/or play on soft courses with heavy sand, you will be better suited to about 12 deg bounce on your lobbie.

Fat, thin and everything in between!

Yes markTHEblake that would be sensible. Got the 52 and 58 at the right price. Perhaps i get a 54 and bend the 52 back to 50??? is that doable? How will that affect the bounce and playing properties?

Thanks Boonie - good advice - much appreciated!

Adding loft adds bounce on a 1/1 ratio.

So bending a 58* with 10* bounce to play at 60* will mean adding 2* bounce (so it will be 12*).

IMO if you are going to bend one of the wedges, I would bend the lower lofted one (52), not the lob wedge.

By bending a 52 to 50 you are reducing the bounce, possibly far to much.

1 degree of loft is equal to approximately 1-2 metres in difference., so how much do you really think you need to change?

That would mean my 3-iron only goes 26 metres further than my wedge:-s

Nugget - I would check the loft on the wedges before you decide to bend one or both. Don't automatically believe that the number on the club is correct. Might also be worth seeing what the distance gap is between them before you decide whether to get a 54 or 56 to fill the gap.

Surely the 3 iron shaft is longer than your wedge shaft?

An interesting discussion, i've certainly learny lots so thanks boonie and blakey.

I can appreciate that 1* here or there isn't going to make the world of difference, but with my old set, a smooth swing travelled:

50* = 105m
54* = 90m
58* = 75m

I guess i take the new 52 and 58 out and see how they compare??

Yes indeed it is
