Hi Simon - welcome to Melbourne - as probably said already, some great courses around the area.
Don't forget to head down to the peninsula - some great tracks to play ( am biased as live there too .....)

Welcome Simon. Enjoy the Sandbelt. I'm a public access course player from Geelong, so sandbelt courses are a very rare treat. Of the sisters, I've played Huntingdale and Commonwealth. I hear Royal Melbourne and Kingston Heath are ok.

Played The Dunes last Wednesday in perfect winter conditions. Worth the 2 hour drive around the bay.

Yep am looking around - I'm playing Royal Melbourne end of Sept but can't afford that one!!
Can't believe the joining fee's!! Especially all this under 40 rubbish where you get a reduced cost to join - its a joke!!

Looks like Spring Valley and Southern don't have joining fees - both look like decent tracks too
the plan is to get out and play a few and see which offers the best course for the price - everyone is chasing new members at the moment so should be able to negotiate a few cheap rounds to try out the course

SMB: Spring Valley is your best bet; Keysborough and Long Island are also both reasonable quality in the area; it comes down to what you value in a golf course and membership.
I personally have never played Southern so I cannot comment on it.
