Doing a 3 month stint in HK post Xmas, anyone had any experience with getting short term membership or advice on how to get a game on a decent track on a Saturday.
Will do some runs into China, Mission Hills etc, looking at where to play closer to the island.
My brother works in Hong Kong and plays in Macau, I gather it's a bit cheaper and more accessible, I'll shoot him an email and ask him about options for you.
Perry my brother has got back to me. Here's the reply:
"Most of the courses in HK are verydifficult to get on weekends, so he would probably need to go to Macau or China toplay as we do most weekends. The green fees are quite expensive though becauseof the demand. Let me know if you need some recommendations.
Went to hong kong early this year and unless you have 3million AU for membership to the par 3 9 hole course on the island you will have to play Sai Kun. Mission Hills will only let you play if your staying there, unless you a member there too.
Hong Kong Golf is limited and there is way to much money for us normal folk to play.
Monthly Rental Fee: HK$9,200 Lease Period: 1 year Security Deposit: HK$18,400 (refundable) Re-nomination Fee: HK$3,000 Payment: 4 post dated cheques of HK$27,600 each Subscription Fee: HK$2,220 (pay to the club by Lessee and non-refundable) Service Fee: HK$9,200
This is the price to lease a membership (from a golf broker) close to the island so I can guarantee Saturday golf, about $16k pa. Me no likee. Never complaining about my Sydney fees again.
heading over to canada end of this week, but will be stopping off in hong kong to visit my Aunty.
Anyway - she has organised for me to play 2 rounds at Hong Kong Golf Club with the club pro on the Sunday (I get in mid morning on Saturday) and the other on the Monday morning before I fly out again.
Anyone played here before, and any tips and tricks i need to look out for?
I know i'm going to embarrass myself badly, but i would like to limit it as much as possible.
Just normal golf etiquette, keep up with the group in front. And no mobile phone call allow on the course.
Tipping of caddy is not needed.
not taking my phone so that won't be an issue. While tipping the caddy isn't needed (like bali etc) is it still the norm, or do those guys do ok?
unfortunately shades I wont have a camera until I get to canada (my brother has it). I'm gonna see if i can get on the coruse again on the way back through, I stop off in HK again for 3 days on the way back so if ic an, i'll get photo's then.
No tipping is the club rule, some people will quietly give a tip. But the caddy don't expect one.
It is not an exciting course, I don't think I took any photos for the few times that I played there. The only thing that is unusual is that they got a few burial sites on some of the holes. And most of the members are seriously rich.
The food in the club house is not bad and the price are very reasonable.

Um? Are you saying some people don't tip the caddies in Bali? The only reason not to is if they were really bad, and like even then I would still tip. It would be pretty dumb not too as your caddie takes your clubs to the pickup area.

Criticism doesn't bother me, as it means I am doing something and people are watching. Handy-Cap
Staff tend not to get tipped in HK Blakey! In fact, cash is avoided. When u play at HKGC you buy coupons from the office for use on the course (1/2 way house etc). They try to keep it cashless!

blame my poor quoting skills. Everytime i've played in bali i've tipped the caddy and almost everyone i know who's played has done as well.
Played out there today on the Old Course. My only tip is to bring a jumper, it was 7 degrees today. All distances in yards, caddies were good on the putts but we left all approaches short. Heavy mist today.
Asia is the land of the rank chopper, doubtful you will embarrass yourself.
