    Default 3 wood that suits

There's a well known fitter in my area. He's a Scratch, Muira, etc. dealer and fitter. He told me that when he fits players the hardest club in the bag to find good fit is the 3W. Head, loft, shaft, swing, ball all have to work together as much or more than any other club in the bag to find the one that fits best.

Got this off a US forum

    Thoughts

    I mix between

Callaway 2004 fairway 13* stock stiff
    Nike sasquatch 15* Wasabi 75-S
    Bridgestone J33 15* By-You 85-s

A 4 wood is a cop out, may as well where my mums panties and use a hybrid.

Must admit though that the TM Vsteel 4 wood I used to have was pretty sweet to hit.

    I have a 16* driver. Better than any 3 or 4 wood.

I saw a Callaway Big Bertha 3 wood in used clubs bin yesterday. I am not sure if it was the 2004 model though?. It had a strange shaft in it. It was metal at the bottom but then from about 6' up it either had a plastic cover, or was some sort of composite material. Oh and it was a nice bright pink colour!

Yep.I've got one here thats goin in my 3w for chits n giggles. The blue's are the rxi & reds are rockets.

3w is probably the club that is the hardest to find,to suit your game, but once you find one it will stay in the bag for a long time. You see alot of pros with 3wood's that are 20 years old.So much for technology eh..

4 woods might as well have iron covers on them.

    Get a strong 3 wood.

How do you hit all of these high-lofted clubs into the wind? Off the sole plate?

Huh? It's a heap easier to hit it higher than lower. I just can't see why people go out of their way to use one-dimensional clubs.

Because they find it easier to hit them consistently. Because they don't play off low single figures.

The higher you hit it the straighter it goes. Simple logic. Less side spin etc as has been spoken about endlessly. Not a lot of point in someone like me playing a 13* 3 wood, would hit wormburners all over the place.

But would the wormburners have a low, boring trajectory?

I recently put a Cobra LD F Speed 3 wood (15.5*, Made for Aldila NV) back in the bag. Before that I wasn't carry a fairway wood.

It got promoted because; 1) distance wise it fits right between my Driver and 2 Hybrid 3) I have gained a few metres on average with Driver in recent months and the gap was getting bigger 3) I can hit it far enough that is a real alternative to driver on tighter holes, or holes that I tend to run out of fairway with the Driver 4) It doesn't tend to balloon 4) I find it reasonably workable 5) With a good drive I now have more of a chance of reaching or getting close to the average par 5.

The strong 3 wood is a recipe for disaster for most players, especially off the deck. Avoid.
