Default Family Holiday ideas in Melbourne

    Flowergirl, Bruce, et al...

We're heading down next Feb 14-17 for a long weekend and am after suggestions for things to do and see with a 6 month old and 3 year old. Sandy and I have done the Ocean Road, Torquay, Geelong, Mornington Peninsular area before. We get in Thursday night and fly out Monday morning and we'll prob stay at the airport or close by on those two nights.

We're thinking of checking out Phillip Island, San Remo and that area. Are there places to see the Penguins? Any other must see things out that way? Is there a ferry from Phillip Island back across to Mornington Peninsular? That would be cool.

We'll prob spend Saturday night/Sunday in Melbourne (museums, shopping etc), so we'd be looking for Fri/Sat things to do and a place to stay.

    http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=l&h...6584&z=10&om=1

    All suggestions appreciated!

EDIT - have decided to base ourselves right in the city, so we're looking for suggestions for things to do and see close in.

Mate, I believe that there is a ferry from Phillip Island area to the Mornington peninsular, but I also recall that hire car company's insurance is void if you take the trip.
    Just a thought.

The Mornington Peninsula is great, and a simple drive from Melbourne, and particularly Cape Shanck is pretty awesome. Wineries in the hills and then over the other side to West Port, then it's a fairly short drive (under an hour) to get to Phillip Island.

You can get a great pub meal at the hotel in Cowes on the Island too.

But don't miss out on having brekky one morning at Brunetti (Faraday St, Carlton), and especially the blood-orange gelato from Donnini's (about 100m from Brunetti, on Lygon St).

ta fishy. That looks reasonably close to the Zoo. Might work for a sunday morning outing. I don't know Melbourne at all, so it'd be good to check out something a bit local like that.

Have found plenty of accom options on Phillip Island, and there's Pelican feeding and penguins to kick about, so looks like we'll spend Fri/Sat on the island.

The zoo is North'ish of the city, so working in brekky at a place like Carlton works in quite well to build up the energy for a day on your feet. Another landmark is Victoria Markets, worth a visit although not much there for the weekend tourist.

And make sure you pack some warm clothes!!

Oh - and don't forget around Mornington-way there's a Flowershop with a Brothel next door. Something for the whole family!

any suggestions on cheap/decent places to stay right in Melbourne itself? With two little kids, it's better if we are close to stuff so we can go out for short outings and then back for sleep time.

Mate I just booked Jarro into the Ibis for his trip.. Check with him. On the right side of town for the Zoo, right near The Vic Markets and an easy walk to town.
    I'm back.

I've stayed at the Vibe Carlton before, not too bad for that side of the city, about 10-15 minutes tram ride into city centre I think

Yeah, the Ibis was great Dion .... just a short stroll to the QV Markets, and really close to trams. Nice restaurant/bar downstairs too .... my tribe loved the place

Dion - we stayed at a place called Quality Hotel Downtowner on Lygon St. It was pretty good and they have some self-contained rooms as well, so you might find that a little more manageable with the bub having a half-decent kitchen at your disposal.

I stayed at the one in Little Bourke St and it was shit. Noisy, nightclub next door & dirty. Will never stay in an Ibis Hotel again.

The Ibis on Therry street was quiet, clean and affordable.

I'll stay there again for sure

Me too Jarro I have stayed there 3 or 4 times, never had a problem. As such I have no worries when recommending it.

    Hiya Dion

If you want to stay somewhere cheap on the Mornington Peninsula then you and your family are very very welcome to stay with John and I. We LOVE having people stay - and have the room.We are good hosts ( ask BrisWesty) There is lots to do down here - golf, wineries, the beach, shopping, markets etc etc.Portsea and Sorrento aren't far and are worth a look.
The only problem would be that 14th February is Valentines Day and I will be flat out the 2 days leading up to it - what day of the week is that??
Even so you are still very welcome to stay - I just won't be around which could be an added bonus.

There is NO car ferry to Phillip Island from the Mornington Peninsula ( or anywhere) only a passenger ferry from Westernport. The penguins are over rated in my opinion but at least it won't be too cold. Phillip Island is a nice place to go with kids. A bit like Bribie Island in some ways.

There is a car ferry from Sorrento across the bay to the Great Ocean Road.

You will see some penguins at the Zoo - tick that one off there. Everyone I know who has seen them reckons they are not worth the effort.

I got nothing for that area. I can't think of anything specific to recommend from the area. There are golf courses and wineries. Most of them are really good. Pull into the first one you like the look of and enjoy.

thanks for the tips Fishy and Jarro. The Ibis & Quality Inn Downtowner are nudging $200 per night though, which is out of our price range. Unless dc68 can get better pricing???

We might end up staying out of the city area a bit and just tramming in to the sights.

Hey Vegas, just get onto Wotif.com closer to the date, there is heaps of deals to be had.

I may be able to organize some accommodation at Philip Island, its not flash but you can cook, clean and sleep well enough. No promises unfortunately

ok, hotel booked right in the city near the MCG.

so... what are the highlights to see in Melbourne that are accessible by tram/walking?? (We won't be renting a car.)

    1. zoo - definite.
    2. QV markets?
    3. Carlton cafe district?

Is the shopping in Melbourne worth a look? Or is it better to go hunting for outlets? Will have a nearly-3-year-old and 6 month old in tow...
