Default 9 hole comps on weekends?

In the past month, I've played 3 rounds of golf, none of them at my home club. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to squeeze in 18 hole rounds now that it gets dark around 5pm. Yet another golfless weekend goes by ...

I read a suggestion somewhere of having 9 hole competitions on weekends. Not the weekday 9 hole chook runs most clubs run in summer. I mean a proper 9 hole comp on either Sat or Sun. Say early morning before the major (18 hole) comp starts or perhaps in the arvo after the last group has teed off. It sounds like a great idea to me and I could certainly squeeze in 9 holes every weekend.

What do you guys think? Good idea? Or crap idea? I might mention it to the general manager at my home club. See what he thinks.

Clubs would make more money from social golfers, not an economically viable option sorry sir

Also no good at 'you/our' home track... as halfway is miles away... would need to play a hybrid round...

But yeah social groups pay good money for the early early slots...

If it's not getting tee time that stuffs you the waiting list always works well, or just rock on up in the morning you'll be off by 9am or after a couple no shows.

How about 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th? Say a handful of tee times from 6:30 to 7:30am. That would work, wouldn't it? Imagine, playing a 9 hole comp, have a drink, and be home by 10am. Plus you don't have to risk your life crossing Wentworth Ave.

Jono, how about those guys that tee off early and play 18 holes, what happens if they run into the 9 hole comp guys? Some clubs have dramas with early groups running into groups starting off the back nine tees.

Of course there are potential problems. However, if there are enough people interested in this type of competition, I think a compromise can be reached.

Perhaps not as stupid as it sounds. One of the options being looked at to improve participation is shortening of the comp rounds. People just don;t have all day saturday every day to devote to golf anymore (unlike diehard golf tragics that frequent these forums). There was an interesting article about the challenges facing the new unified body in The Golfer or one of those magazines not to long ago.

Jono. Other than Korean, most people doesn't take 6 hours to play 18 holes.

I find it surprising that the Koreans take that long, considering that they never wait for groups on other fairways to hit.
