Wonder where his son goes.
Wonder where his son goes.
Dave Smith quits as NRL boss.
I firmly predict the League world will miss Smith a lot after he has gone. It is the toughest job in sport, and by far the toughest part of it is satisfying the vested interest of News Limited.
I'm still wondering which News journo will get the job. They all seem to know everything. My personal hope is that Phil Rothfield gets it. Then we all get to know what a goose he is, and we don't have to read his drivel. Maybe Rupert will take the job himself.
"There are 50 things to remember in the golf swing. Trouble is that I can only remember 49 of them" - Bob Hope.
I'm a bit more with jimandr on Smith.
When first selected for the job I had my reservations given his background however I think he could reasonably say he has left the game better than he found it. No great strategic changes but I hate change anyway. As Jim said, this job of appeasing News plus a bunch on whiny clubs can't be easy.
Those who are kicking him on the way out, what do you think he lacked or should have done?
Dunno, the game appears softer than when he started.
Plus I reckon he made a real meal of the new TV deal, why would you cut out Fox sports, they have a much better coverage than Channel 9.
The shoulder charge being rubbed out of the game altogether. The no punching rules for seconds, wasn't that all during Smiths time?
Shoulder charge had to go, no question in my mind, I like to think if myself as "old school" but even I can recognise.
The NRL has a board, several hundred employees and David Smith. Anyone who has worked in a corporate environment knows that decisions like the TV deal are not made in isolation. Was David Smith the point man on the deal, sure, but I can guarantee it was a committee rather than individual decision.
I am happy to sack anyone in any profession if there is someone better crying out to be given the job, not sure this is the case here.
Graham Annesley has been touted as a possible candidate for the job. It would be interesting to see if he is seriously considered for the role, assuming he puts his hand up, or whether the powers that be are looking for a cleanskin. I heard that former AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou has said that he isn't interested in the role.
Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.
They gotta keep Greenburgh or whatever his name is out of it.
Pffft
