Last year they had 3 practice/selection days and although I had my name down I didnt get the email re times and dates , only found out when a member asked me was i going to the second one . I went to the second one neither handicap team captains turned up, there was only 3 of us so we played a 3 way match , I won both matches 1 up and 8 n 6 . All the scratch team played amongst themselves and then went home without speaking to us after the game .
Was a little put off by this , back was playing up a bit so didn't go to third session . When teams came out the guy I beat 8 n 6 was named reserve for the third team ( he had been to all 3 sessions) all other handicap teams members hadn't been to the second session and only some to the other sessions very few had gone to 2 of the 3 sessions .
About half way thru the pennant season the team captain came up to me when I was teeing off on the ninth and asked if I was still interested in playing pennant told him no , the reserve for the first match was then selected .
This year I put my name down again only because of some encouragement by a couple of members and because i have got my cap down from 13 to 9 and have been playing some ok golf .
This year no practice sessions just an email dividing the interested players into three groups of about 8 , think there are 6 games per team , I was in the second group which was the first handicap team couple of mates are in the second handicap team . We were told who our captains were and that they would be in contact and we were given the dates and courses .
Captain of second team contacted his team a couple weeks ago both my mates were selected ,they played their first match on sat , team won .
My captain sent out an email last week asking for availability and contact details , I replied quickly as did one other . In my reply I said that I hadn't played a couple of courses and would appreciate knowing in advance so I could make sure I could get and play them . I would add here that i live an hour from the club and some of the other courses are another hour away so to me it was going to take a fair effort to play in this thing.
On about thurs afternoon i receive an email from captain saying he hadn't heard back from a couple of the guys yet and that he would select the team over the weekend when these guys get back to him(pennant started on the weekend although we had a bye). He also added that he was going to select the team on form and availability but he couldn't tell me yet if I was in the team (although i believe my form is ok and i was available). He also told me not to bother playing the courses beforehand because he didn't believe it would make any difference .
I would add here that of the other 7 guys in the team I have only played one game with the captain , and once with two of the other guys ,the other 4 I haven't played with or met and a couple I didn't even recognise their names .I have been at this club for 18 months.
Now I might be being a bit precious and I am not saying I should be in the team but I just got the feeling I was going to be used as late notice call up if at all and because of the distances I have to travel and that I prefer to only play one day on the weekend I just felt that things weren't going to work so I withdrew. Plus it just has a mates first smell about it to me .
Funnily enough my mates in the other team knew far enough in advance to go and play the course they were playing in their match before hand.

Well I am disappoint, we went down 4-3 in our final.

For my part, I was behind early, had a good run through the middle and was 3up at the turn, lost 10, then 3 jagged a pretty short birdie opportunity to turn a win into a half on 11 and really fell apart a bit from there, went down 2&1. I played some great golf shots at times but my waywardness off the tee really killed me down the stretch and the putter was stone cold all day which didn't help. The other bloke was a bit more consistent, and outplayed me when it mattered.

Ahh well, such is life eh. Better luck next year!

    It's official.

I have a 0-9 team record as a Pennant Captain. Topped off by our side going down 7-0 in the last round. I officially resign.

At least I took my match down the 19th this week.

I did you are correct , I also said I withdrew because it was obvious that I wasn't going to get a run , that I was only going to be used as a last minute fill in which was very difficult for me to do .

Last minute fill in may have been your way to break into the "inner circle".

True and I did consider that but I couldn't fill in last minute so I would have done more harm to the team .

We won our 7th straight VGL div 1 today. Makes 11 wins on the trot counting the lower divs. Pretty good streak.

Played VGL Pennant during the 70's, although I don't think we ever made Div 1.

Our seniors team were in their division a few years ago. The steep fairways were a topic of conversation in our club rooms for a few weeks after. I think they did OK, it would be just as hard for the home team to defy gravity.

I think it was one of your guys that was going to give me a serve on the 12 th tee , he thought I was a greenkeeper , I was dressed like one but I was just there to see one of the home team guys. Think I would have copped it had I said I worked there .

Got a phone call today, selected in the Gold Coast District pennant team. I got so excited I went to the driving range tonight

Yes, its in the overweight unfit fat blokes division, but I already have a Junior and Open guernsey so thats the clean sweep, I can retire now..
Playing against Northern Rivers and SEQ, oh, I hope old Steve57 is playing too
