Dorset?I just feel its all too matey and disorganised . The club enters three teams , scratch and two handicap divisions , gets it butt kicked every year , club captain ,vice captain and president seem to have no obvious interest.
Last year they had 3 practice/selection days and although I had my name down I didnt get the email re times and dates , only found out when a member asked me was i going to the second one . I went to the second one neither handicap team captains turned up, there was only 3 of us so we played a 3 way match , I won both matches 1 up and 8 n 6 . All the scratch team played amongst themselves and then went home without speaking to us after the game .
Was a little put off by this , back was playing up a bit so didn't go to third session . When teams came out the guy I beat 8 n 6 was named reserve for the third team ( he had been to all 3 sessions) all other handicap teams members hadn't been to the second session and only some to the other sessions very few had gone to 2 of the 3 sessions .
About half way thru the pennant season the team captain came up to me when I was teeing off on the ninth and asked if I was still interested in playing pennant told him no , the reserve for the first match was then selected .
This year I put my name down again only because of some encouragement by a couple of members and because i have got my cap down from 13 to 9 and have been playing some ok golf .
This year no practice sessions just an email dividing the interested players into three groups of about 8 , think there are 6 games per team , I was in the second group which was the first handicap team couple of mates are in the second handicap team . We were told who our captains were and that they would be in contact and we were given the dates and courses .
Captain of second team contacted his team a couple weeks ago both my mates were selected ,they played their first match on sat , team won .
My captain sent out an email last week asking for availability and contact details , I replied quickly as did one other . In my reply I said that I hadn't played a couple of courses and would appreciate knowing in advance so I could make sure I could get and play them . I would add here that i live an hour from the club and some of the other courses are another hour away so to me it was going to take a fair effort to play in this thing.
On about thurs afternoon i receive an email from captain saying he hadn't heard back from a couple of the guys yet and that he would select the team over the weekend when these guys get back to him(pennant started on the weekend although we had a bye). He also added that he was going to select the team on form and availability but he couldn't tell me yet if I was in the team (although i believe my form is ok and i was available). He also told me not to bother playing the courses beforehand because he didn't believe it would make any difference .
I would add here that of the other 7 guys in the team I have only played one game with the captain , and once with two of the other guys ,the other 4 I haven't played with or met and a couple I didn't even recognise their names .I have been at this club for 18 months.
Now I might be being a bit precious and I am not saying I should be in the team but I just got the feeling I was going to be used as late notice call up if at all and because of the distances I have to travel and that I prefer to only play one day on the weekend I just felt that things weren't going to work so I withdrew. Plus it just has a mates first smell about it to me .
Funnily enough my mates in the other team knew far enough in advance to go and play the course they were playing in their match before hand.
