I thought I'd share my bike riding experiences this weekend, just to show it isn't all paradise.

I had big plans of putting my head down and going as far as I could, then heading to the closest train station after my legs gave out. No such luck.

Firstly, my first ever effort to put extra air into road bike tyres ended in tears. I didn't really know how robust or fragile the tyres and valves were, and in trying to do it one handed with the bike standing up against the wall, the bike moved, I bent the valve stem, and created a leak. After taking a very long time to work out the best way to remove the tyre and tube, I said goodbye to that tube, and fitted a new one. This all took so long that my plan for a long ride was out the window.

So a short ride was all I had time for. During that ride along the Hume Highway freeway, some idiot threw a plastic bottle out his car window at me. It missed, but I still can't believe what a stupid act that was.

I arise on Sunday to see the same tyre dead flat. I'm slightly more experienced in changing tyre tubes this time, so I get the tube out without too much trouble. I can't see or hear any leaks, so I blow the tube to full capacity. I then give it one more spurt, AND BLOW THE TUBE APART! Another tube down.

Tube number 3 gets installed without further drama. I set off, get no more than 500 metres, and then I actually hear that tube burst. I don't reckon I overinflated it, so I'm hoping it was just one of those unlucky things. I don't have any more tubes, so that was the end of the bicycling weekend. I couldn't find the energy to spend another 30 minutes or so pulling out the tube to see if it can be patched.

The bicyling gods giveth, then they taketh away.

Sounds like you may have a sliver of glass, wire from a steel radial or even shale, caught in the tyre.

Inspect the outside, even run a hanky or old cloth around to see if it snags. (Don't use your finger, as they slice easily.) Ditto for the inside, when you have the tyre off. A good habit to get into.

Handy hint. When you replace the tyre, have the brand/label/arrow beside the valve. It makes it easier to locate the culprit next time, by matching the hole in the tube to the tyre.

Seeing that it a new bike, also check that something on the rim such as a spoke thread isn't catching the tube.

Sounds like very poor luck Jim to have 3 tubes go in one weekend.
Were the tubes the correct size for your bike? Or did you pinch it between the tyre bead and the rim on installation? Lots of simple reasons for tube failure. The joys of Tubed tyres.

I don't suppose you want to buy a Camelbak Rogue 2.0L Hydration pack? It's ideal for cycling. I've got one for sale.

No, I wear them for trail running. This one has been used once only, but it didn't suit my running very much, and now I have to sell it (at a big loss too, I'm sure).

Nice rig Goughy. If only I were fit enough to do proper riding!

I did the Spring Cycle last week. It's a great day out, and 3.5 hours in the saddle, in and out of families and wannabe champions. To see kids on BMX's at the finishing line 50 km's later is quite funny.

Surprisingly I was fine the day afterwards. What it did though was remind me how much fun a prolonged time in the saddle having a joy ride can be, rather than jumping on board and taking on the nearest big hill.

Now that my legs have recovered from Shepparton I am planning on doing a pretty solid bike block. I did a 20km time trial last night to see where I stand...never done that before and it bloody well hurt. Just cracked the 36 minute mark and would love to get it down to 32ish minutes in the next 3 months or so. Not sure if that is reasonable but will see how that goes. Plan is to do the TT monthly to see how I am progressing, or not progressing!

    wow, flash bike mate!

I just bought a 2008 EMC2 Etape Team from a mate who's upgrading to a custom titanium bike (and I thought golf clubs were big $$$). I won't get it til his bike arrives, but am happy to wait for a bargain. Can't wait to give my brother's old Apollo back to him!

I can still use the 'dale if you can fix it. I don't think I'll get my new bike for 2 months or more.

Have a look at Velocity Deep V wheels. They're a local mob and can make 28/32/36 spoke rims for clydesdales. My new bike has 32 f / 36 r setup.

what's wrong with the wheel? surely a repair would be cheaper than buying a new one? or grab a new set cheap from cell/torpedo7 etc....

    $69 for 3kg cell wheels,

    $149 for 2kg Shimano R500.

ouch. What rims are on there currently? Might be cheaper to grab a new set of those R500's than to find a match for what's on there already. I assume Andreas is paying for the fix.

Not looking for a match, just any reasonable quality rear wheel that will fit.

have my eye on a few on ebay, then will resort to retail in about a week if no luck

New roadie. Actually, it's my first roadie since high school. I've been borrowing my brother's old chrome apollo for 6 months or so.

For a 2nd time now I've gotten to experience watching a mate come off his bike!! Bloody lucky, if you can call a face plant lucky. No broken bones. But he went face first into the road at 50+k/hr. He could nearly stick his tongue through the hole in his lip, but managed to avoid gravel rashing his face. But his last crash 4 years ago was at 20k/hr and he smashed his hip, so he's feeling lucky, if you could call it that. From our group, the optometrist checked his vision, the ear nose and throat specialist checked the bleeding from his mouth and nose, and checked out his neck. the other doc was checking for breaks etc, and the plastic surgeon checked out the damage to his face and reassured him that he'll be able to make improvements. My mate himself is an anaesthetist and just wanted to get home so he could take some good drugs. Me, I called a cab. Felt very useful.

I'm sure he'll be laid up on his couch for a while, and it will then need retrimming
